Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had 9/4/2006

My husband and I could care less if it is organic, local, etc.. we just want good quality, good tasting food and we found that and more at Taqueria Nueve. Pros: super duper fresh and authentic mexican food more

Great Tasting Food Naturally 7/30/2006

I go to TN every chance I get. I try to eat natural meat without a lot of chemicals or antibiotics, and anyplace that serves fresh fish from Newman's Fish Market is on my list of places to check out. The tacos at TN are simply wonderful, they contain beef, onion and a little cilantro. They don't hide the taste of the meat with cheese, lettuce and sauces. I took my 10 year old, who was looking for beans, rice, and cheese on his plate, which isn't what he found at TN. Well after the proper amount of refusing to try the food, he tasted it, found out he really liked the tacos and ordered the carne asada enchilada. Which is served with the steak on top of the tortilla. He loved it. The soup made from pinto beans is delightful, and the ceasar saled tastes wonderful. Also the strawberry margarita is absolutely delicious, its made from fresh squeezed fruit rather than the bottled fake flavorings that most bars use. If you go to TN expecting taco bell or typical Portland Mexican food, you will not find what you are looking for. If you go there expecting fresh tasty creations you will be amazed. For desert ----try the coconut ice cream, it is delish. more

Not your ordinary mexican restaurant. 6/25/2006

The people who write bad reviews for Nueve have two complaints: no chips and salsa and there aren't any hispanics. Pros: Great food, great drinks, very unique Cons: Long waits with no waiting area, no reservations for parties less than 6. more

Fine food, beautiful people, a good Rioja? 6/16/2006

I was there a night in late March, a Sunday and at a meal of small plates of caesar with ceviche, tender octopus pulpo, a carne asada taco, and flan, I enjoyed it more this time than ever before. Earlier, the wine was a red, Rioja and it paired well with my lamb Osso Bucco, or the Mexican version that was superb. Even better was the great bartender who was so cordial and accommodating. The host/manager deserves a rating point too! Give it a try because it's one of my favorites, in the top five, no doubt! Pros: Excellent food, drinks ot match, wine as well Cons: Crowded, waiting, street parking in the neighborhood more

Good food and good service 6/1/2006

This little (kind of) out of the way place has some really good Mexican comfort food and a few higher end choices (Duck Confit in mole sauce; get it!!, but add salt). The menu is not that big, which is refreshing, because they specialize on fewer rather than many dishes. Controlling flavors and textures on a few dishes is much easier than doing the same on many. The strawberry infused margarita is the best I've ever tried and the beef tongue tacos were really great! Stay away from the Mexican rice; it's lacking in taste and texture, but get the refried beans. They're tasty. This a very nice restaurant with a good/price value. Be sure to get there when they first open or you will have to wait a while. Pros: Lengua Tacos, Mole Duck Confit, Strwaberry Margarita Cons: Mexican Rice, Parking more

Yummy! 3/25/2006

The food is great as long as you can live without chips and salsa, I think the tostada or mexican ceasar MORE than make up for this missing appetizer and whet your whistle for their fabulous menu. Rice or Beans aren't featured with most entree's so be sure to get a side order (you won't regret it). The margaritas are amazing: the Amorcita is a house specialty featuring strawberry infused tequila, the Nueve is a great margarita with an orange twist and the big men on campus MUST try the 'El Jefe'. The atmosphere is great, but it can get a little loud, and there isn't a lot of seating so I wouldn't recommend it for kids. The service is EXCELLENT (we love Josh at the bar). Also, come early, be prepared for a wait, or cozy up to the bar...because the word is OUT and this place is crowded! Pros: Food, Margaritas, Service Cons: Crowds, No Chips & Salsa more

Very Good Food 3/18/2006

This place is great.. the food is wonderful.. new experience all around... it gets a little cold in there sometimes but worth the chill.... get there early the place fills up fast. Sometimes the waiters can be a little short.. but the dozen or so times my husband and I have been there we have only experienced it twice.... not bad... try this place if you are looking for somewhere new to go.... great date location.. great place to meet friends for drinks... and the cesar salad is to die for! more

The Best 11/8/2005

This is the best Mexican restaurant in town in my book. Everything we ordered was divine. The wild boar in particular bordered on a religious experience. Even the green beans were fantastic! And the margarita made with strawberry tequila was seriously one of the best drinks I have ever had. Ever. Ambrosia. The staff was also very, very sweet about seating us outside at a table with a nice little out of the way spot for our dog to lay down and kept her water bowl full. All in all a perfect dining experience. Pros: Margarita, Food, Service Cons: Outside on sidewalk more

Amazing 8/3/2005

The first three or four times I went here, I had the most tantricly ecstatic divine bliss experiences with the food & wine here. The best thing I've ever had here was the RABBIT TACO. Their coconut ice cream is heaven. There are some things on the menu that are completely deleriously amazing. And strangely, after the 5th, 6th and 7th times I went there, my experience began to deteriorate and I quit going. So I don't know what's going on there... It used to be insanebliss, and then it just became good. Definitely not Mexican food the way the Mexicans eat.... The best thing though is the margarita. Highy recommend the enchilada. more

simply the best 7/19/2005

it doesn't get any better then this. burritos can bite me... these guys know what REAL mexican food is, and should be. My favorite restaurant. Simply the best. Cons: none! more

Bland food, great margaritas 7/2/2005

We were excited to check out this ""Mexican"" restaurant after the rave reviews it received. Hardly a Mexican restaurant. They do not serve tortilla chips (even if requested) and there is little to zero cheese in their dishes. The staff swarms the dining room constantly asking guests if they would like another margarita. They were the highlight of our bland dining experience. They are very busy. So busy, in fact, that one of the waiters backed right into me with a pitcher of sangria and spilled it all over my white sweater. He then proceeded to give me a nasty look (like it was my fault) and walk away like I somehow inconvienced him. The other patrons noticed and said a few nasty comments his way, but he didn't seem to care. Overall, I would say to go there for a drinks before heading to a real Mexican restaurant. more

dinner at taqueria nueve 5/3/2005

The restaurant seems to be popular, and that's a good thing. It's no excuse for poor service though. It took about 30 minutes to get a seat, which isn't necissarily bad, but we had to wait outside in the rain due to no wait area. Our waitress was less than friendly and had no real knowledge of the food. I was disapointed to see a mexican restaurant with the only hispanic in the establishment working as a dishwasher. The food was below average, i had the carne esada enchilada and I have had MUCH better in a cheap ""hole-in-the-wall"" style place. The hype is just that, hype. Taqueria Nueve didn't meet the recommendation that we had recieved. Pros: Dessert was fantastic, No Parking, Uncomfortable wait Cons: Waitress was rude, Food was only decent more

wow! 4/27/2005

This restaurant has been my favorite for years. I absolutely recommend this fine mexican eatery to anyone who is looking for real food- sans all the cheese and too much drowning sauce. Remember the original little place that opened? I still think back to the first time I had the Coctel de Pulpo, oh my goodness! Owner/chef Billy is a genius. I will miss him keeping an eye in the kitchen as he is now spending his time at their new restaurant in the pearl, D.F. Don't forget to check out D.F., either! Pros: octopus, tacos, desserts more

One of the best places for Mexican in Portland! 3/26/2005

I was a little taken back by the name - expecting the typical taco/burrito joint - this is a nice, sit-down restaurant with some of the best Mexican food in the area. Try the mole - it is amazing. Top it off with the best Tres Leches Cake immaginable. Ceviche is the best in the city. I am from Texas, so I know what I am talking about - this is a great place! Pros: Mole, Tres Leche Cake, Ceviche more

Unsure about the value. 2/13/2005

The mole really is wonderful at Taqueria Nueve. But, the portions are really way too small. I'm not writing this place off because the quality of the food is good. The value is way off. If you're use to substantial portions for Mexican, this place will disappoint. Pros: mole, service more

A not-so-good ending 10/11/2004

I love Taqueria Nueve and have introduced TN to many people yet this past week having been there twice in three days due to my birthday, I had a bad experience. We got there @ 5:30 for a leisurely dinner, was told to sit where ever we wanted. Due to gifts, we selected a table for four even though there were only two of us. By the end of the meal, chatting and having coffee (and having spent $75), we were asked to move to a smaller table so they could seat a group of four. Bad management and a possible lost customer is that worth it for ten minutes more? That's NOT good service nor good customer relations. Pros: food, drinks more

Favorite Mexican in town 3/9/2004

Food is a bit overpriced. Its a 'fancy' mexican restaurant. Would definatley take folks visiting from out of town. Really enjoyed the Carne Asada Enchiladas. The steak was served next to the enchilada instead of inside - was delicious. Love the atmosphere. One Margarita will take care of you. Pros: great atmosphere, delicious food more

Umm, What's all the hype about? 1/24/2004

Sorry, I'm not sure if no one reviewing this has never had good mexican food and great margaritas. Or perhaps you have all been lulled by the Portland restaurant syndrome... Lots of image and ambiance (and high prices) with zero excitement on the plates. The decor was lovely and cozy. The food was boring and not especially flavorful with the exception of the carne asada which was pretty good. The ceviche hardly tasted of seafood, the drinks were watered down and tasteless. This ain't it folks. Pros: great atmosphere Cons: mediocre food, parking, watery drinks more

New Menu is fabulous! 10/16/2003

Taqueria Nueve has changed parts of their menu, and it couldn't be better! Billy has done a great job on the new entrees and salads. (try the Poc Chuc for the best pork chop I've ever had.) The salad with the Braised buffalo brisket is a salad full of meat with lettuce and radishes as garnish! I stop in here once a week, and I still won't get through the menu before it changes again! The food is always great, service is top notch, and great drinks too!!!! Make sure to go early as they fill up! Pros: Poc Chuc, Margaritas!!!!! Cons: bar stools are hard more

Excellent! 8/26/2003

Consistently great food is the key to a great place to eat and Taqueria delivers that and more. I've visited multiple times and have tried a lot of the menu but I always get my favorites and they are excellent each and every time. The drinks are fabulous, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the place is clean and inviting. Highly recommended for anyone that even remotely likes authentic Mexican food. Pros: Great vaLUe, food & drinks Cons: none! more
