Best

I have been going here every weekend for quite some time for these reasons... - Guaranteed great tunes - I'm a big music fan and you can count on there being good music most nigh...

Worst

I was disappointed to have my birthday party at Sutra, Lets just say dont get deceived by the website and clip they show. Old furniture, much smaller than what you'd expect, I mea...

Great space, great crowd 4/7/2006

I threw a going away party for a friend on Thursday. It was a grueling search for the right spot, and this was definitely it. It had everything I wanted: Beautiful, comfortable space, great music, an eclectic, fun crowd, and a great owner to work with, Ariel. Highly recommended! more

Great place with invigorating atmosphere! 3/11/2006

I had my 24th bday party at Sutra, had about 30 odd ppl come in... This place has such a great vibe, fantastic atmosphere and really good music esp after midnight... awesome relaxed feel with lots of space and rich fragrances.. some of my woman friends even complemented the aroma in the ladies room ;) The owner, Ariel is an absolute sweetheart! Very accommodating and takes great care of you .. makes sure everyone has a fabulous time! Pros: Incredible decor, Great music Cons: Can get crowded more

this place is great! 2/17/2006

this place is great. wednessdays are my favorite night. the crowd is ecletic and they have these two dj's, dragon and pushpaka, and they throw down the house and funky breaks like you'd expect in a 25$ a night club. the drinks are reasonable and the service is above average. check it out. a++ Pros: the music Cons: none more

one of my worst nights in NYC 2/8/2006

I went to this place for a friends birthday. He had already put down $1,000 on bottles, so there should have been no problem getting two cute girls in. The bouncers outside were horrible! Even though it was a cold and rainy night, we stood outside patientlly waiting for "two people to leave" because it was "too crowded". Eventually, two friends of ours left so that we could get in; however, the bouncer skipped us to let two people behind us in. We continued to wait (about 20 mins and still raining) until we were finally allowed to be stamped. I commented to my friend that this was ridiculous and the bouncer proceded to block the door and say we had to leave due to our "attitudes" I have lived in NY for 4 yrs, and have gone to many top clubs/lounges with no problem until Sutra. Never go there!!! Pros: Nothing Cons: Staff, Long waiting, Crowded?? more

Good place to throw a party 2/5/2006

I just had a bday party at Sutra and I was very happy with how it turned out. These were my concerns/issues when I was planning the event: 1) cost per bottle, 2) no attitude at door/no mix up at door, 3) enough space, and 4) good music. All of my concerns were met: the cost was by far the best that I found (for bottle service), the door people and manager were cool to deal with, there was plenty of room for my 20-25 guests, and the music was straight hip hop and reggae (which my friends and I love). One recommendation if you're planning on having a bday here: request a table off of the dance floor and not in the back (I had my tables in the back and there are no speakers there). Overall: A+. Pros: great music (hip hop), hot crowd, cost effective Cons: no speakers in back more

Hot Ass Club! 1/5/2006

Sutra Lounge is da place! Don't listen to the haters, this place is hotness. I had my birthday there and first of all the owner, Ariel, is the most accomidating club owner I've ever come across, and I've worked and partied in clubs my whole 35 years, so that's saying alot. A great atmos. sexy and inviting. The drinks and the drink slingers are top notch, the door folk are mad cool and professional, and everyone in my party promised that they would come back. No doubt, this place is awesome, I would party here any time! Pros: Great vibe, Mixed music, Beautiful people Cons: A little small, long bar waits more

Sexy in the City... 1/5/2006

Sexy, LoL, that about sums this place up. From the chocolate covered strawberries to the sexy male and female bartenders (Especially that hunk Barton meow LoL) and specialty cocktails, this place just exudes sultry. I was attending due to an invite from a friend, and honestly didn't expect much from the plain outside, but the second I stepped in the vibe just washed all over me. I highly recommend the one made in a cocnut by a hottie named Alex as well as the ginger Sutra Dragon. Can't wait to go back = ) Pros: Hot Vibe, Hot Drinks, Hot servers more

lovely 1/5/2006

What a sweet gem..perfectly lit, good sound system, plenty of room to dance and chill, cool people from all walks of life. My friends and I were shocked at the bottle prices, almost unheard of in NYC and the speciality cocktails we totally unique, ever tried a cucumber martini?? I really love this place.. totally laid back but with high energy. more

Don't let the name fool you 10/15/2005

This is not an Indian/Middle Eastern-themed place as the name Sutra may suggest. Yes, there are Buddha statues and they burn incense, but the music is 100% rap and hip-hop and the crowd is about 95% rap and hip-hop. It gets much too crowded on a Saturday night, upstairs and downstairs. Cons: Crowded, Rap/Hip-hop, $$$ weak drinks more

Turtle Bay goes downtown 10/2/2005

It's too bad the Turtle Bay crowd seems to have made it's way downtown. The crowd here is cheezy and lame, not what one should expect for a seeminlgy trendy East Village lounge. The drinks are decent although a bit overpriced, and the decor is reasonably appealing. However, it get's too crowded on a weekend night, and these people need to go back uptown where they belong. Pros: drinks, decor Cons: people, crowded more

Not Sure 9/27/2005

Went on a Friday night, it was packed but with a weird crowd. It started to get busy around midnight. The place is small but inviting and given the right mix of people, it could turn out alright. The bartenders are outstanding. more

Best Martinis, cutest bartender 7/18/2005

It might not look all that from outside , but I walked in and felt warmth and wait till you taste the drinks, absolutely A++, THE CUCUMBER MARTINI IS A MUST. No wonder, they found the best Mixologist in the world, ALEX, a blonde absolutely gorgeous surfer dude, who makes you anything you desire and wait till you taste it, his barback is a rockstar, his name is Harve, cool cat. The owner Ariel is considering a beautiful young female, an old school east village local. The music could be better, too much Hip Hop and Raeggae. But make sure you round the night off with a Chocolate love martini or a lemon merengue. Pros: Cocktails, indian flaire, Great barmen Cons: too pricy, no indian music, need females more

DON'T BE FOOLED 7/11/2005

Their "specialty" drinks taste so good because they are made from pure sugar... honestly, just watch the snobby bartenders make them. At $12 a pop, I rather buy a lollypop. The place is nice, but that's the only good thing I could say. The service is HORRIBLE!!! The crowd is BORING and you have to wait on a VIP line just to use the bathroom. The music is typical Z-100 crap. It's sad to see bars like this opening up on the East Village. Pros: Nice place Cons: Expensive, Bad Service, Bad Music more

User review by tlovely 5/23/2005

i spent my birthday there a few months ago and although i do not know the management or anyone who works there, they were amazing and brought me a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. this place is hot.. buddas lining red walls and candles everywhere. dancing and ginger martinis. the owner is this lovely woman who was so attentive and sexy to boot! i've been back many times and always recommend it. more

Had a BLAST! 5/23/2005

Can't say enough about this awesome place. I was there a few weekends ago, and my girlfriends and i had a blast. The place was jumping, loved the music, and best of all they make the best martinis i've had in nyc i swear (and that includes all the overpriced $12 martinis i've wasted my money on!). i was drinking the cucumber martinis all night. Pros: drinks, music, vibe more

Another wannabe "LOUNGE" 5/6/2005

The drinks are $$$ and taste weak. The crowd is not too attractive , the bartenders are slow- and, again, not too attractive. What has happened to all the east village bars?!? They all seemed to be geared towards the poser crowd ? I would'nt recommend going to this over-priced joint unless you have money to burn...and your not too attractive. Cons: expensive, weak DJ, poor service more

User review by reddpl7 4/20/2005

This place uses fresh ingredients for their specialty drinks which gives this place an earthy feel. The waitstaff, like anywhere, is a little distant at first but warms up to you later on. We started singing What I Am with our waitress. We came a little after ten when the place was still mellow but I am in love with the decor of this venue. I'll definitely try it again at a later hour. Pros: specialty cocktails, ambiance more

loungin' 4/13/2005

Sutra was more than accomodating to my party and their needs. They even had chocolate covered strawberries being served on a platter. The place was busy, but who wants an empty bar anyways? Good service, great music, great bartenders. And they have an underground lounge with an additional bar and DJ booth. Overall great place. I would recommend and go back often. more

Another DUMP 3/30/2005

Here you go, another DUMP with an ok CS rating.....don't bother. more

service was terrible 2/25/2005

The place was empty and the bouncer was playing cool at the door--he wasn't letting anyone in....took some friends an hour to get in (guys). The cocktail waitress was trying to charge us $10 for the same drink that cost us $7 at the bar. Then she got mad when we asked her about it and had all of our drinks cleared from our table. Definitely wasn't a friendly place. The bartenders were nice and that was it. Pros: ??? Cons: bad service, door policy, average at best more

Editorial
  • In Short
The upstairs bar and lounge glows in shades of red, with the velvet draping and the low lighting adding to the sexy air. Another party rages just down the mirrored stairs. The cave-like basement room has a separate DJ and bar, with tight seating. The velvet rope seems mere formality most nights and doesn't deter the young, diverse clientele.
