Money,money, money 6/28/2009

This clinic will do unnecessary tests for very obvious problems. the Dr. claims to be a cancer specialist...maybe he is but, I think he just takes advantage of peoples feelings for their pet. Sometimes it's just time to say goodbye not keep paying for unsuccessful treatments. Pros: none Cons: takes advantage more

Not recomended 5/4/2009

It is sad to see the culture in this clinic has not changed much over the past 9 yrs since we last visited them. My wife and I had just picked up our 3-month old yellow lab puppy and had much to learn. Not knowingly we exposed our puppy to other dogs before he had his standard vaccinations. And he promptly picked up a case of kennel cough. Here are the facts: more

Great Experience 10/28/2008

Our dog developed a bad habit of licking, resulting in a severe lick granuloma condition. We took him to three vets before he saw Dr. Fred. All three vets advised different treatments and none of the treatments worked.\r \r Dr. Fred put on his doggie shrink hat and found a solution that was somewhat "outside the box," I believe. He put our dog on Reconcile for a few months, which is typically used for separation anxiety. Bingo! It worked and the licking habit was broken. Now our dog is off the meds and has no interest in his old habit. We are very pleased with this clinic and now take all our animals to Sunset Animal Clinic. more

Happy with our care 1/22/2008

I think Dr. Labavitch is great. He's got the experience, the bedside manner and the expertise with animals. Our dogs came to him with coccidia, spirochetes, campybacter and giardia (the latter had been missed by another vet). They had enlarged tonsils, bloody diarrhea and their skin was hanging off them. He got them all cleaned up. Now they're happy, healthy puppies, growing normally, wreaking puppy havoc like they should be.\r \r I like the staff at the Clinic, as well. Always friendly, very comfortable with our pups, gentle, and giving lots of love and attention. \r \r Labavitch does some really cool cancer care and can handle everything from minor to major health issues.\r \r Prices are competitive. \r \r They will board your pups, too, and give health checks before and after boarding. We're going to try that out next month when we go out of town. Seems safer to have them stay with a vet, someone who knows and cares for them already, than to put them at a random kennel for the wee more

A very caring/knowedgeable staff 11/27/2007

We first experienced Sunset Animal Clinic/ Dr. "Fred" when our Lab was diagnosed with abdominal cancer and the clinic was reccomended as the best in the Portland area. Even though our Lab ultimately succumbed to the awful disease, he was treated very humanely by a wonderful Doctor and loving staff. more

Made my puppy cry! 1/15/2007

I took my puppy here for his first vet exam and vaccine boosters, and I have to say I was NOT satisfied. The exam did not seem thorough (compared to the kitty exam we got at Banfield, this was very disappointing -- no feedback on coat/teeth/eyes/etc). The doctor also gave him a "complimentary" nail clipping. (I had just trimmed his nails, without issue about a week earlier, so I thought it was unneccessary, but I didn't stop him. I should have.). He made him yelp on the first paw, second paw, third paw. By the fourth paw he noticed some bleeding (he had cut too short). Then while trying to stop that bleeding, it became apparent that those yelps were all warranted. He was bleeding from 3 or 4 different toes! He couldn't stop the bleeding with the normal method so he took him to the back to "try something else". I have no idea what he did, but I guess it worked. Pros: friendly staff Cons: bad communication, careless clipping, overpriced for the service. more

Always above and beyond 7/16/2006

We take our three pets to Dr. Fred, and he has been wonderful. From annual check ups to surgeries and emergencies he is always there for us, listens to us and advises us with the best interests of our pets in mind, never his pocketbook! You won't find a better, more committed vet anywhere. Pros: great, friendly service, always there for you Cons: somewhat pricey, but it's worth it in the end. more

Give us a call to schedule an appointment. We provide grooming for both cats and dogs. We work with special need, senior, and hard to handle pets as well. We require all pets to be current on their vaccinations, see general care for our requirements. As part of the grooming we do clipping if needed, bath, brush out, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and external expression of the anal glands. If you elect to add the Spaw package we use a special shampoo, hair coat conditioner, nail grinding and brush the teeth. It is important to maintain some general grooming at home, such as trimming your pets nails, brushing their hair, and bathing. Some breeds require more maintenance. Pugs, bulldogs, or other flat faced breeds require the facial folds to be cleaned regularly and depending on the pet some require it daily. The flat faced kitties also require this maintenance as well. Long hair pets require brushing daily or matting will be a concern. Grooming on some pets involve getting the pets hair cut on a regular basis. These are time commitments and financial commitments. These are very important factors to consider before adopting a pet. Before you adopt a pet you should research the breed to make sure you are a good fit with the needs of the breed. **Dental Care: Dental care for your pet is just as important as it is for you. The bacteria in your pets' mouth can cause problems with their internal organs, such as their heart, kidneys, liver, and spleen. Keeping your pets teeth is a big part of keeping your pet healthy. Proper diet, treats and brushing are an important part of the care of your pets' teeth, however even with proper care a dental cleaning will be necessary. A dental cleaning for your pet is essential done in the same manner as your teeth are done, however your pet will be under anesthesia. The teeth are scaled, polished and a fluoride treatment is applied. We do offer a sealent for your pets' teeth. We apply the first treatment at the end of the dental cleaning. There is also a take home kit in which you can apply to your pets' teeth. Proper care after a dental can prolong the time between dental cleanings. Because the dental cleaning is done under anesthesia we would recommend some blood work, to help reduce certain risk factors. Some breeds, medical conditions or the pets age we would require blood work. We want to make sure we do what we can to ensure the safety of your pet. **Boarding: We do provide boarding as a service. To ensure the safety of all pets, we require all pets to have an exam each time they come in for boarding. We only charge for one exam but we examine your pet multiple times during their stay with us. We also do an exam before they go home, because of this exit exam all pets are able to go home after 10:00am on their departure date. We also require all vaccinations to be current. If your pet was vaccinated with another facility we do require proof. We require vaccinations to be given by a veterinarian. All of our vaccination requirements are listed in the general pet care area. We walk the dogs 4 to 5 times a day. We give each ca...
