Best Japanese Grocery Resource in Manhattan 5/16/2006

Sunrise Mart is the best Japanese specialty food shop in Manhattan. They have a bigger and better selection of fresh foods than the more common JAS Mart chain, while also having a good stock of Japanese packaged goods. Their selection of these is also broader than JAS Mart, although I do find that particular items do tend to sell out from time to time. They also have a video section, personal care products and sell traditional Japanese tableware. This store is excellent for those who are into Japanese stuff in general, are knowledgable about Japanese food or have spent time in or are from Japan. I was introduced to the place and have been a regular customer since I lived with someone from Okinawa over a decade ago. more

Straight outta Japan! 8/21/2005

A bit hard to find upstairs above St. Mark's Bookstore (take the elevator) this Japanese food (and video and cosmetics) oasis in the East Village has all the fresh sushi fish, seaweed salad, mochi, and tea you could ever want. You gotta try the minty fresh eye drops found only here and in Japan, that are like mouthwash for your eyes- burns at first but then leaves your eyes felling like a cool winter breeze. more

Cool place to check out. 8/20/2005

This is a great place to purchase all your Japanese groceries. It’s a bit small but they have a wide variety of items. Lots of drinks, candies and pre packaged goods. They don’t offer any fresh vegetables or things of that nature. The market is located on the basement level. You might have a tough time finding this place as the entrance is hidden inside a Japanese bakery. Prices for Japanese groceries are always high and this place is no exception. I guess its something to do with the exchange rate. All in all, this is a neat place just to check out. They also sell Japanese magazines and skin care products. more

Japanese grocery stores are the best! 8/17/2005

Sunrise Mart is another great Japanese grocery store besides JAS Mart. You can find cheaper lines of Sheseido’s bath and body products there. It is a great place for picking up items such as Japanese pasta sauce and green tea ice cream. You can also buy pre-cut fish for making your own sushi. more

Fantastic Finds for Japanese food 8/15/2005

Located near NYU and the Village, Sunrise Mart is a small market that specializes in selling Japanese food and groceries. The location may be hard to find as you have to take an elevator to go up to the store, but once you get off it's just right there. The store sells different Japanese snacks, frozen goods, noodles, chips, sauces, plates, and even sushi. Prices of items are a bit expensive as most Japanese foods can be. It contains food and snacks not typically sold in Chinese Markets so if you like venturing new food and like Japanese food, you may want to check out Sunrise Mart. more
