The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flag...

Great place for late night italian foods 1/26/2009

I have been in steps of rome many times, mostly late at night after a fun night in north beach. I must say the food always taste great to matter how late is it. \r \r The staff seems to really enjoy their time while working and interacting with the clients. \r \r The only draw back, since its one of the few that is open late, it can get little crowded and the food might take longer than you expect. Pros: Opens late and great food Cons: little noisy more

Best place in SF! 5/1/2008

Steps of Rome is a WONDERFUL place to eat, have a beer, or dessert. The staff is beyond great! They are attentive to your every need and are always around to make sure you're having a good time! The chicken parmigiana is terrific! My daughter had pasta which she loved and her friend had pizza and said it was one of the best she's ever had! Yes, my daughter would love to marry the host in about 8 years but that's beside the point! HAHA!! Steps is truly a great place! The fruit filled sorbet is a refreshing dessert after a long day of shopping. The Company I work for will be traveling to SF this month and will definately stop by Steps of Rome!! Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! more

Too many good spots in N. Beach to waste your money at this one. 4/28/2008

The first thing we did when we entered this cafe was ask if they take American Express; and the host indicated that they do. After ordering, we watched the activity around us while waiting far too long for the food to arrive. \r \r The waiters behaved like juveniles, flirting and pawing the teenage girls while ignoring customers over the age of 20. After our entrees had not arrived for nearly 45 minutes we inquired with our estranged waiter - who nearly yelled at us 'It's coming!' Our food showed up a couple minutes after that. It tasted OK but was COLD...as if it had been sitting on a counter for quite some time. \r \r When we were ready to pay, the waiter told us they not only refuse American express but do not accept any credit cards at all. I emphasized they had told us they accept Amex the moment we arrived - but he insisted that's wrong and refused to take any credit cards from us. No such policy was posted, and I think this boy was just upset with us because we asked for our food after waiting only 45 mins. Don't waste your money, or time. This place is strictly for teeny boppers. Pros: location Cons: everything else more

Have fun while you eat 12/5/2007

Steps of Rome is a completely different cafe experience... this isn't the place to go if you want quiet dining\r .. You can expect an impromptu party here any time of day or night, which adds to the allure of the cafe... There is Italian music blasting through all of the speakers, and the waiters and patrons are usually singing and dancing along... i would recommend coming to Steps of Rome Cafe for their delicious desserts and espresso. \r Pros: Atmosphere more

Awful - Rachel Ray Lied 10/26/2007

We have lived in New York and know what real italian food should taste like, but even if we didn't, who doesn't know that vodka sauce is a creamy tomato sauce? The Gnocci with Pancetta and ""Vodka Sauce"" most resembled a warmed bottle of cheese wiz. The Fettuccini Carbonara tasted as if I was licking the inside of a salt shaker. The food was bad enough, but the sight of the waiters taking off their shirts and dancing provocatvely in between running out to the street with a menu to encourage people to come in was too much to take. Please, go to North Beach as it is a great neighborhood, but go anywhere but Steps of Rome Cafe! Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Food more

Where do I start? 9/2/2007

In all fairness the food that we had our night there was pretty good. The atmosphere, however, was horrible. Unless you want to end up next to a table full of high school girls singing Bob Markley at the top of their lungs, do NOT come here!! We actually asked the wait staff very politely to turn the music down just a little and they turned it up and then made sure eveyone knew we'd asked them to turn it down so that we felt like the party poopers. Embarassing (for them, not for us). Really -- I've never had such a horrible dining experience in my life. more

What Kids? 5/29/2007

it's a fun place if you're late 20s to early 30s - loud music, great atomsphere, euro feel, decent food, etc. Pros: ambience Cons: service more

Save your $, your ears, and your tastebuds 3/20/2007

Do NOT, I repeat do NOT eat here. Loud music, inattentive wait staff, and cold food are just the tip of the iceberg. The music is blaring and by the end of the night I felt like I had the onset of laryngitis! Our reservation was completely ignored, drinks were warm, food was bland and cold, and the servers could have cared less because they were far more busy doing more important things (lapdance anyone?) Anyone over the age of 20 will likely be miserable in this overrated, awful place. more

Don't go there for service or the food 3/18/2007

The reviews on the food are laughable at best. This place would be good if you are drunk and anything would taste good and you don't mind waiting a half hour for a table. Half our tables' food was cold - the beer was served warm. They brought wine bottles to our table but didn't provide enough wine glasses to everyone. Think of this place more as a club - that just so happens to serve food. Considering what food was served and the service, it was completely overpriced. I would highly suggest checking it out with at least 4 people before planning to have a group there. Cons: Food, Service more

BEST DESSERTS IN NORTH BEACH 2/9/2007

I had recently been to the Steps of Rome Trattoria (which is right next door) and I wanted to try the Caffe since I loved their connected restaurant. My friend and I just had dessert but it was so delicious. We had their famous tiramisu and the proffierals...both great and priced right! The atmosphere in this place is great for a fun, loud, and crazy night out. The waiters sing and dance with the tables and you really feel as if you were in a Caffe in Italy. We didn't eat but I will definetly return to have dinner and more yummy desserts. Pros: GREAT DESSERTS AND FUN ATMOSPHERE more

FUN FUN TIME!!! 9/11/2006

ATTENTION LADIES AND ANYONE WHO WANTS TO HAVE A FUN FUN TIME ....This place was a crazy, loud, yet addicting time. The waiters are very outgoing and friendly. My two girlfriends were visiting from San Diego and I wanted to show them a good time. This was just the place!! The whole restaurant interacts with eachother...everyone was laughing and joking around with the staff. We had ""raviolo con pink vodka sauce, fettuccine pesto, and the Margherita pizza,"" and all shared them. All delicious and very filling. I would suggest the tiramiso for dessert. Late night eats as well...open until 3am!!! For those who go out in North Beach or near by. Check this one out!!! Pros: Fun, crazy, and entertaining atmosphere! Good for groups Cons: If you want quiet, not the place for you...just try it! more

Fun waiters, but poor service and food 8/20/2006

Even though reviews are mixed, I had to try this place out for myself. I had friends coming to the city for a girlfriend's birthday and thought that it would be a fun place to try. I made reservations, but they hardly pay attention to them. Our party of 7 waited outside for at least 30 minutes before finally getting crammed into a table for 5. The food was terrible, they don't have a full bar (the bartender threw a fit when we ordered mojitos because they take awhile to make), and although it was fun, it was an all around trashy night. The waiters perform lap dances and make out with anything that moves. You are better off going across the street to Mona Lisa's (which is more expenseive but much, much better) and heading over to Steps of Rome later for watered down drinks, loud music, and a boost in self-confidence. Pros: a few good looking waiters, fun music Cons: lousy food, poor service, trashy waiters more

Highly Overrated 7/4/2006

The food is below average. I recently visited this restaurant and was disapointed with the food quality. The San Fransisco restaurant scene is tough to survive with quality at this level. Pros: Staff with character Cons: Below average food quality more

What a blast! 9/23/2005

My friend and I went to Steps of Rome Caffe after seeing it featured on Rachel Ray's Tasty Travels. It looked like a blast so we decided to go. I am happy to say that the show was a fare representation as we didn't want to leave. The service was excellent, food was tasty, and the overall atmosphere was very upbeat and enjoyable. I hope to make it back ASAP. Pros: service, desserts, cute waiters Cons: long line more

Not very good food 9/4/2005

I had a friend that use to love this place but I think it had to do with the waiters, not the food. She loved the attention she got there. I personally didn't and go out to eat something good to great-- this place has neither. The food is your absolute generic italian food, basic, plain flavors. I'll only recommend if you like a loud, cheap place to eat after a couple of drinks. Pros: cheap Cons: everything more

GREAT EUROPEAN FEEL 7/30/2005

I'VE BEEN GOING TO STEPS OF ROME FOR MANY YEARS NOW AND IT STILL IS THE BEST DAMN ITALIAN CAFE IN THE CITY. I EVEN TOOK A COUPLE OF ROMAN FRIENDS WITH ME AND THEY LOVE IT. BEST CAPUCCINO AND A TIRAMISU TO DIE FOR. COOL STAFF, GREAT EUROPEAN ATMOSPHERE. EXCELLENT PLACE TO GO WITH A LARGE GROUP OF PEOPLE. Pros: FOOD, STAFF Cons: PARKING more

The most fun spot in North beach! 7/12/2005

I went to Steps of Rome Caffe on Saturday night and had such a good time. When my friends wanted to go to North Beach I said no because I feel like all the places in North Beach are the same. Saloons or nasty bars on Broadway. Luckily we passed by the Caffe and had a great time. The staff was friendly and good-looking, the food was tasty, and the music was fun! I will be back next weekend. Pros: staff, food, dessert Cons: no credit cards more

User review by jeppie 7/4/2005

I just got back from San Fran and I went to the Steps of Rome on a recommendation of a friend who used to live in the city. I wasn't that impressed. The pasta was cooked right but the sauce... the pesto was so bitter that my sister had to put tons of parmesan cheese on it to attempted to help. All in all that wasn't so bad until the bill came and they told us no credit card. No where is it written (the door, meun, waiter) that they don't accept credit cards. I am sure that there are better Italian restaurants to go to. Pros: good looking waiters Cons: poor food more

still a san francisco institution 6/27/2005

I had moved away from San Francisco adn had not been to my old favorite hangout, the Steps of Rome Caffe, in two years. Upon my return to the city, I decided to check it out and see if it was still as good and fun as it used to be. Fortunately, I found Steps of Rome unchanged. The same managers were there and it still had the flare and charm as years past. The pasta was al dente and awesome. More than the good food, I have always liked the place for its fun European atmospshere. I guess not all good things must come to an end! Pros: atmosphere, waiters, food Cons: parking more

best bachelorette party of my life 6/26/2005

Last Satuday I went with a big group of grilfriends for my best friends bachelorette party. We had the time of our lives. We had made reservations in advance but I was a little nervous because they wre for 7 pm on a Satuday night and I know it gets packed on the weekends. But they saved our table for us and the waiters were fantastic. They were so much fun we didn't stop laughing the whole night. The food was excellent and prompt. I would reccomend for any women planning parties to do it with Steps of Rome. I will be coming back. Pros: service, waiters, fun atmoshpere Cons: bill takes a while more
