St. Joseph med center is the place to be!! 10/23/2012

I work at GBMC and I had given birth in both St. Joseph and GBMC. I had two children in St. Joseph and one in GBMC. I would like to say that St. Joseph has the best loving sensitive care in the most cleanest rooms that do look like hotel rooms with plenty of cabinets and all cherry wood. The response time when calling a nurse is the fastest. I never felt any pain and I was always comfortable. Sadly do to me diciding to have a tubaligation at my last C-section. I was not able to have it done at St. Josephs because it is a catholic Hospital so I went to GBMC. At GBMC the rooms were not the best looking ones to start. It was cold looking. The response time for a nurse was way past 10 minutes. The one particular nurse made me feel prety uncomfortable when I would ask for help because she made it seem like I asked too much when in reality I had been my second time. Before my surgery they had put my catheter in before I was numb which hurt like hell then they made me walk over to the operating table. At St. Joseph that never happend and I understand that maybe they had changed their rules but Why??...After surgery I would ask for pain medication and the nurse treated me like I was a junky. I WAS NOT!! NEVER HAD BEEN!! She just told me I had to wait till it was my time. So I did. I waited in pain for a few hours just as long as I didnt move I was good. Sad but true. At the end of your visit you are asked what did you think of your experience and I said it was ok but remind you that I still had two more days to stay there so since I knew that I did not want any of the nusres ganging up on me like they have for a friend's mother whom had stayed there since she had pneumonia. They treated her like crap by the way. more

There's a lot of competition among local hospitals for maternity patients, and with good reason--it's one hospital stay that people have plenty of time to plan for and look forward to. In Towson, GBMC seems to be the hospital of choice (it's big, and I'm told has a lot to offer) but based on my own experiences and in talking to friends, I'd recommend St. Joseph's instead. St. Joe's has everything to offer that larger hospitals do (including a maternity ward with only private rooms that look more like hotel rooms, which is quite common now in all area hospitals) but the care you get is much more personal. I've heard horror stories from women who gave birth at other facilities about feeling pressured into interventions they didn't want and who had nurses who were downright unpleasant. At St. Joe's you won't run into anything like that. The staff members are respectful and caring and always put their patient first. For my second birth, I was very specific in wanting no interventions--I didn't even want people counting at me when I was pushing. I was so impressed that the nurses all *remembered* everything I asked and followed through. Giving birth isn't always a pleasant experience, but at St. Joe's they do everything they can to make it as pleasant as possible. more
