TASTELESS FOOD 12/18/2008

We used to be regulars for years since service used to be great and delighting food. This last two years we have been going there less frequently becuase the FOOD is TASTELESS compared to what it used to be. We ordered a plate of calamari as our appetizer and were disappointed by the flavor of the sauce. The calamari were like rubers with sauce with no flavor. As my main course, I ordered the Fettuccine Amatriciana. Again no FLAVOR and the pasta looked like a flour-ball. I thought the pasta was handmade but could have heard the waiter incorrectly. My friend's fish had a rooten smell and TASTELESS SAUCE. I would not go back anymore and would not recommend to anybody! \r What happened, the CHEF lost the TOUCH! We are not the types to write reviews, but take note of this one....Decent food (which is why we gave it one star -- even if we could give it zero stars we wouldn't) but deceptively overpriced. We blew well over 100 dineros on a shared bowel of pasta and veal meatballs, a glass of mediocre house wine, a martini, an artichoke app, and a bland Caesar salad. It was more like a Cesaraen salad, for when the bill came, replete with hidden charges for sharing an entree or for a ""warm appetizer"" or for perhaps just not being a member of the mob, it felt like childbirth without an epidural. Bottom line = skip it. You can find better food for far less in that hood. The ambience is cozy. But Pros: Decent fare Cons: Extreme price, deceptive menu pricing shannanigans more

Horrible service, over priced food 9/27/2007

I hate to write anything bad about a place, but Elio's was a waste of $114 for two people at dinner. We were seated and given menus 10 minuets later, we asked for water and never got it, we ordered a glass of red wine and a scotch ($36 bar tab), asked for parm on our soup twice before it came.... Our waiter was MIA almost the entire night. We had to keep asking other waiters for assistance. They charged $32 for a tiny filet of sole dipped in egg and pan fried. The ""special"" sausage and pasta dish for $26 was a step-up from Hamburger Helper. The vegetables were all very fresh and prepared wonderfully ad the soup was excellent. The bread was very good as well. I just hate spending good money to eat out and not getting good service. This was my second trip to Elio's and will be my last. One of my favorite places in the city 9/25/2007

After moving down the street I came in and had the best service and food I have had in a long time. I went durring the week and it was not too busy, however it does get packed on the weekend. Also check out the opera schedual, many upper east siders come to Elios before the opera. The service impressed me the most of anything, the waiter was helpful and even has the chef make me something that was not on the menu. Some of the pasta is homemade and so is not so go for the homemade if you can. The only thing that would have impoved upon the menu is giving explinations of each item. Many things are common or well known dishes however there were a few I had no idea what they were and the menu gave no clues and I did feel bad asking the waiter to stand and explain several of them too me. I plan on returning many more times!!! more

Great food, though pretentious service 4/28/2007

Overall, I liked Elios. I didn't love it, but I liked it. They didn't have Carbonara on the menu which came as a shock to me and I asked if they could make specially. The waiter was very accomodating and out came the greatest Carbonara I have ever had (including the many plates I've had in Italy). The service wasn't great though and the prices are way to high for the portion size. The Veal Scappolini was only fair and so was the Chicken Piccata. I'd come back for the Carbonara, thats really it though. There are better Italian restaurants around that charge half the price. Pros: Carbonara, Romantic Cons: Price, Service, Wine List more

Excellent food and service 2/22/2007

My daughter and I had dinner on a recent Tuesday evening. 7:30 reservation. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, but sitting at the bar surveying the lively crowd, we hardly noticed. The food was excellent. My spaghetti puttanesca was well seasoned, making an old favorite seem new. Her pasta special (penne with tomatoes and mozarella) was simple but delicious. Even the before-dinner breads were great; crunchy crusts, flavorful. The house chianti was just the right note: robust but not raw. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. The hostess/owner was gracious and welcoming. \r This is my first posting to CitySearch. I'm from the Pacific Northwest, used to good service. Pros: Food, service, atmosphere Cons: Can be crowded and patrons like to linger - be patient, it's worth it more

Worst Service Ever, Bland Food, Rude Staff 2/11/2007

Although I have to admit, I thought the risotto that my date ordered was tasty, my market-price swordfish was like eating the tube out of a bicycle tire. The tables in the dining room were so close together that even the waitstaff could not manuver through the partrons without rubbing against people while they were trying to eat. When the table next to be was ordering, I had to stand up until the process was complete. The other option would have been to invite the waiter to share my chair with me. And all of this on a Sunday evening after 8:30pm. The icing on the cake was the coat check girl with the attitude fit for Spago in L.A.... I didn't need this experience and would give it right back to any one of the staffers if I see them in MY place of business. Please, if you are in the mood for ass-in-face all night, bland food, rude people, for a mere 200 dollars.... then accept my appologies, this is your place. Pros: None that I was made aware of. Cons: Too many to list here more

Great Food, Awful Service 7/10/2006

If you want great food but are willing to sacrifice any sort of self respect or service then Elio's is the place to go. The food we had was excellent but the host was extremely unpleasant (sat us late for a reservation), the waiter didn't appear for 20 minutes. When he did manage to grace us with his presence he took the orders and then left for another 30 minutes. They never brought the bread to the table, the second glass of wine we ordered never showed up, no one ever checked in on us, and lastly they give everyone a couple of peice of biscotti complimentary. We had a table of three so we asked for a couple more after we had paid the check, they informed us they wouldn't bring anymore unless we were to re-open the check. If you're going to give complimentary things then make sure there are enough to go around! more

Chicken and Veal to die for! 9/6/2005

Being as picky an eater as I am, I usually try to order pasta when I go to Italian restaurants. This time, I was advised to try either chicken or veal. Well, my sister and I ordered chicken and veal parmigiana dishes and split them. Both were spectacular. Pounded super thin, melts in your mouth, and the sauce and cheese just oozed off of them. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a nice chicken or veal, but you might want to come during somewhat off-hours, as the place gets PACKED, and the wait can be interminable. Oh, and this place can be a tad expensive. Definitely worth the money, but only if you have the money to spend! Pros: Excellent chicken, Excellent veal, Good service Cons: VERY busy at peak, Kinda pricey more

Amazing! 7/25/2005

Elio's is the Il Mulino of the upper eastside! It has the best ceasar salad and paglia e fieno. I love the upper eastside atmosphere. We often saw Derek Jeter there before he moved downtown. Many celebrities know of this jewel, but remain extremely low key because no one is there to celebrity watch. In fact, no one really cares because we are all waiting for our food to come out! Elios is an exceptional restaurant. I have been there a number of times, and while at times the service is lacking some, last time I was there they were more than cordial. In fact, the waiter brought me a glass of wine to sample in addition to the bottle we had already ordered. The host could be a little more polite, however. If you are in the mood for delicate and delicious Italian meal with and upper-east side feel, this is the place. Make a reservation, act like you know what you are doing even if you don't, and most importantly, enjoy the exquisite food. Pros: food, wine, ambience Cons: host, price more

The menu is interesting but doesn't live up to expectations - I've eaten better in less pretentious Italian restaurants around the city. Worth the visit 7/3/2003

Felt like I just snuck into the country club at this high-end east side italian. Clearly a gathering spot for the affluent in the area but worthy of their praises. Everthing was fresh and delicious. Waiters were helpful and friendly. A little cramped but the Old New York feel to the dining room makes it OK. Would even go back with the kids if I could get in and out before the rush. more

Rudest ever 11/3/2002

Had reservations here last night(was recommeded to my family and I by a friend). First of all you have no clue where to go when you walk in and no one was helpful in pointing us in the right direction, then the host was as rude as he could be--said it would be at least 20 minutes and then told us to move out of the way, but there is no where to go because of the crowd. Needless to say we walked right out. I am sorry but there is no excuse for the rude treament we received and no food is good enough for that. I don't know who the staff thinks they are, but they need to learn a few lessons in manners!! Pros: good food Cons: rude staff, loud, too crowded more
