My boyfriend and I were visiting Berkeley from out of town and we decided to order some pizza to be delivered to our hotel room. We found this place on Citysearch and it had some great reviews, so we were excited to try it. However, we ordered our pizza and although it is exactly 6 minutes from our hotel (according to googlemaps), it took almost 2 hours to be delivered. When an hour or so passed, we called the restaurant to make sure our order was going through, but we were told that the delivery man had stepped out and they were waiting for him to come back. Once another half an hour had passed, we called again and, once again, were assured that the delivery man was on his way. Finally, about one hour and 55 minutes after we had placed our order, we received our pizza. The pizza was fairly good, but kind of stale, as if it has been sitting in the car for quite some time. Definitely not what we expected for almost 2 hours of waiting. Ridiculous! Pros: Okay pizza, diverse Cons: worst service ever! more

This Berkeley hidden jewel gives great excuse for a nice walk or jog from campus to the south of Berkeley! Cordial staff serve cold beer along with many other refreshments to boast for itself including an ever popular San Fran treat for the sweet teeth at heart: a Double Rainbow ice cream booth! Large open spaces, pristine hardwood flooring with great internet hook-ups provide a most relaxing ambiance to set the mood whether it be for socializing, surfing the web or just plain relaxing to thought provoking classical music that may stir your spirit while sipping their delicious coffee. Did I mention their extremely flavorful homemade pizzas made from scratch? They first roll out each pie dough by hand, then add generous & supple amounts of cheese served overflowing off a light, thin crust. I recommend adding succulent sausage, freshly grounded garlic, cilantro, juicy tomatoes, red onion & mushroom to your pie for after devouring mine whole, I left satisfied with change to spare for when I come back tomorrow. more

We need more places like Spud's in Berkeley! In addition to tasty pizza they have calzones, sandwiches, salads, wine, an excellent selection of quality beers (in bottles, on tap, and by the pitcher including Trumer Pils and Lagunitas IPA). They also have espresso and coffee bar with pastries and such. The space is large and pleasant: high ceilings, arched windows, lovely decor, colorful and tasteful large works of art on the walls. There is free wireless internet, as well as computers you can rent for Internet use. There is a separate banquet room which can be rented for parties where they also have live music and comedy shows on weekend nights. There are plenty of tables near outlets to plug your laptop. There is pleasant, varied, not-too-loud music playing. It serves a diverse, family-oriented clientele. The lighting is soft and pleasant. In fact, the interior is so pleasant that it would even be a good candidate for a wedding reception, rehearsal dinner, or similar kind of celebration. It is very tasteful and large and historic-feeling -- seems to be a refurbished historic building. I live in South Berkeley myself and I think Spud's is owned by a local resident of of this community. Spud's is JUST the kind of establishment that I WANT in our neighborhood. I also would recommend Spud's as a location for hosting a party, event, or fundraiser. The interior is really pleasant, the food is quite good, and the service fast and friendly. I will be returning often! Pros: Ambience, decor, beer selection, pizza quality, service, free internet more

I live around the corner from this place and avoided spuds like the plague because of this other guy's review. We decided to try it out anyway--ordered calzones and they were REALLY good! The crust was excellent. It's a large space and they have live music and free internet. A nice little local restaurant in a neighborhood that needs community and good business coming in. I'd say come on and try it out, get a calzone and you'll like it! more

It wasn't worth the wait 11/25/2004

The crusts are stacked behind the counter, dry and yeastless, so the crusts are as thin as a cracker, and tasteless. They use cheddar cheese which should be pointed out on the menu somewhere. When my order was hopelessly screwed up, the man behind behind the counter looked annoyed and said "What do you want me to do?" Since I had just gotten a pizza covered with stuff I didn't order, I thought a re-do wouldn't be a bad idea but he just shoved two dollars worth of coupons at me to use "next time". The place was practically empty, so it can't be blamed on a high pressure environment. Compare it to Zachary's which is packed every night of the week and has never screwed up an order in the 10 years I've been going there. Give Spud's a miss. Pros: spacious, clean, internet access Cons: , rude service, bad pizza more
