Best

Visiting Pittsburgh from NYC and came to this ""hole in the wall"", but don't let the shabby exterior fool you. Inside, it's dimly lit and romantic in a shabby chic sort of way, ...

Worst

I love the food at Spice Island, but I just had the worst experience. I told my server that my friend was going to be 15 minutes late, but she was very nice and agreed to seat me...

Out of Towners Who Loved It 2/10/2006

My wife and I came in from California for a memorial service. We used CitySearch to find a couple of places to eat. We stopped here for lunch and we were VERY pleased. I had the Chicken Panang- not like Penang Gai (red curry chicken in Thai rest.)- but delicious none-the-less! My wife had a vegitarian dish that she liked a lot. They have a huge tea selection, and the tea of the day was great- I don't drink tea much. The service was great. We love good food, and we've recommended this place to anyone who would listen! Pros: Food, Service more

A Gem of a Restaurant that Feels like Home 1/30/2006

I was in Pittsburgh this week for work and went to this great little restaurant. Reminds me a lot of places in NYC. Great ambience, with different styles of chairs and some pretty funky vintage furniture. The food is fantastic, even better than a lot of the places I've been to in NYC. It also boasts a pretty impressive wine and beer list. The place was packed the night I went, and it's pretty small, so I wouldn't bring a huge group here. Pros: Good prices, Food, Ambience Cons: Parking, Crowded more

POOR POOR POOR service 11/5/2005

service was slow from the moment we walked in. we were standing and waiting awhile for a table when there was empty tables, and ignored. after being seated, we were again ignored when we were ready to order. others that came in after us were promptly seated and orders were taken before ours. FINALLY someone came to take our order.. long wait before we were given food. we werent given main dish plates, just the serving dishes. we asked for these, it was another wait. we weren't given drink refills. as we were finished, the wait staff was more concerned with wiping empty tables then getting us our bill. FINALLY someone came with our bill, ignored us again. flagging them down with the bill did NOT help. after writing ""$0. Poor service!!"" in tip area, we were charged $4 extra from the actual bill. I would NOT recommend this place! Pros: vegetable samosas Cons: service, tip cheating more

Really good food at a decent price. 6/7/2005

A great place for SE Asian food. Food is very fresh and authentically spiced. Usually the atmosphere is quite good (and inside of restaurant is nicely decorated and not over-done). Sadly, the head manager (owner?) is very cold and unfriendly with customers. Pros: excellent food, not overpriced Cons: parking, can be noisy more

Peaceful place to eat. 6/18/2004

Whenever I pass by or approach this restaurant, I always wonder if it is open. It is so dim inside and there are not usually many people going in or out. Once inside, the service is quick; its probably almost as fast as eating at McDonald's etc. But, the food is such a treat. Everything I've eaten there is wonderful. Chicken sate, pad thai, Mongolian beef salad. This is definitely worth a trip, even if you don't live in Oakland. Pros: atmosphere, food, speed more

Mango Chicken Dreams 3/26/2003

Spice Island Tea House is perhaps one of the most interesting places you'll ever eat at. The menu is full of items you can't ever pronounce and they have a fairly large collection of teas. Two very nice ladies watch closely behind the counter. The minute your beverage reaches a certain point, they quickly order a waitress to refill your cup. Everthing I've ever had here was excellent. The Mango Chicken is to die for. Trust me on that one. Pros: Excellent Service, Amazing Food, Friendly Staff more

Excellent atmosphere and food 2/6/2003

I have been here twice and had excellent service and food both times. Discovered this restaurant through my DUQ (NPR) listing of discounts. more
