Son Cubano is a lively restaurant located in the heart of the meatpacking district. This restaurant/bar serves up delicious food as well as a delicious atmosphere that is set back...

Atmosphere AND Quality food 12/14/2005

Erin, please check out my previously published review of Son Cubano. Try to make it during off-peak times if you have a large party (they don't take reservations on the weekends), but this is one of my favorite restaurants in the city and I think you'll enjoy it! more

Perfect in every way 9/28/2005

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday this year and I loved every second of dinner! From the great food and drinks to the swanky bar up front, this restaurant in the meat-packing district is a hit. Great way to impress a date, great way to celebrate a birthday, and perfect location for a night out on the town, Son Cubano is one of those restaurants that you want to keep coming back to time and time again. more

Thank goodness the FOOD is legal... 4/26/2005

Forget the cigars, this fantastic Cuban food is all you need. A friend of mine who's of Cuban descent introduced me to this place, and it's fantastic. Lots of traditional foods like croquetas and "Vieja Ropa" - a layer of sweet plantains, then a layer of rice, with spicy shredded beef on top - as well as more exotic fare like filet of sole with mashed banana on top. The ambience is great, a long wooden bar, sturdy wooden chairs and beautiful tile-work on the walls. There's also live music on the weekends, which can get a little loud in terms of conversation, but seeing the musicians in traditional ruffled shirts is worth it. Prices are about $8-12 for appetizers and $20-26 for entrees, but you get enough food for literally four meals (no kidding, a stapping dining companion of mine ate his fill and there was still enough for my lunch the next day. You can easily share an entree, or stock your fridge for several days, so it's a great dining out treat when you still need to get your money's worth. Then there's the drink menu - the strawberry-mango mojito packed a punch even when consumed with dinner, desert (oooh, don't get me started on the Tres Leches Cake...) and coffee. GO HERE. The don't take reservations during peak hours on the weekend, but they were able to seat my party of three within 1/2 an hour when we walked in. more

Editorial
  • With circa 1950s black-and-white photos, mosaic murals and ivory banquettes lining the walls, the attractive space evokes pre-Castro Havana. Live Latin music six nights a week, a dark wooden bar long enough to lean on and mingle at, and group-friendly seating arrangements create a festive scene. Smaller tables toward the front and out on the sidewalk offer more intimate dining. The extensive tapitas side of the menu offers a solid Cuban sandwich, a fresh seviche mixto of octopus, calamari and shrimp, and other meat and seafood standards. Entrees include Cuban classics with upscale prices, like ropa vieja and arroz con pollo, as well as Son Cubano's excellent signature dish, rabo encendido, featuring tender chunks of oxtail in a light tomato sauce, served with white rice and delicious fried sweet plantains.
