I'm not disputing the level of care at this facility but my family has had a very negative experience with the staff. We switched to Somers Veterinary Hospital solely based on location when we moved to our new home. My dog's first annual visit was simply ok and we left the appointment feeling conflicted (and really missing Tolland Veterinary Hospital!). We then get the reminder card a year later for our dog's rabies shot (4 days before she was due!) and quickly made an appointment. We were a little concerned that we received the reminder card only 4 days prior to the expiration of her vaccination… what if we were out of town and weren't able to bring her in so abruptly? We were immediately suspicious that this was done on purpose so we would possibly have to return a year later rather than three for the next vaccination, but we overlooked it. At the appointment the staff listed off several shots/etc. our dog was due for and my husband (who was overwhelmed) ok'd all of it. Included in that list of items was a de-worming medication that they were prescribing as a preventative prior to receiving any test results. The problem/confusion stemmed from the fact that they didn't ask my husband if he would like a preventative de-wormer (like they had the year prior - which we declined), but simply told him she was due to have it. I don't understand the need to give a de-wormer to a dog that doesn't have worms and have made the personal decision to not give my dog any unnecessary medications. In fact, the drug fact sheet for the medication prescribed actually states that the presence of parasites should be confirmed prior to administering the medication which only reinforced my decision. I spoke to one individual two separate times and both times was spoken to in a condescending and rude manner. My feelings and views were never taken into consideration and I was continuously being told to just give my dog the medication. When I stated that I was considering switching vets based on this experience, the woman couldn't have cared less and told me I could pick up my dog's records. They apparently didn't care enough about my family's business which leads me to believe that my animals would not get the best care at this facility. A customer/client should never walk away from a conversation and feel belittled and be brought to tears but unfortunately that was how our experience with Somers Veterinary Hospital ended. We will not be returning and will never recommend this facility to friends and family solely based on our interactions with one staff member. more

I have repeatedly visited Somers Veterinary Hospital over the years with my dogs and Dr. Hensen has been wonderful! The hospital hours are so convenient for someone who works full-time; but best of all is Dr. Hensen and staff. Dr. Hensen takes the time to explain her findings, and will answer all of my questions. The staff is on top of things and will even call back with lab results and ask for updates. Thank you for taking great care of my babies! more

Somers Veterinary Hospital 4/8/2014

I have gone to a number of vets in the area over the years, but none of them has ever been as wonderful as Dr. Hensen. She takes the time to sit down with me and explain whatever issues are going on with my dogs, and she's even called me back with bloodwork results. I feel at home at the office, and she has a wonderful staff! Keep up the great work!! more

I have been going to Dr Hensen for many years and owe so much to her and her staff for keeping my dogs healthy throughout their lives. She is very thorough and leaves no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of a problem. I had two dogs that each lived to be 15, one of which was a diabetic. She taught me how to administer the insulin shots and what signs to look for in the event of a problem and was always there for me in case of emergency. She even delivered some insulin syringes to me on her day off once when I ran out. She has done life saving surgeries and under her watchful eye, her head technician Kelly and her entire staff, my babies recovered completely. I now have a new puppy that already has become a part of their family. This is a wonderful facility and much more, they become your friends and really take a personal interest in your pet. I highly recommend Dr Hensen and her staff for quality and compassionate care. more

My dog is on his death bed with cancer because of this vet! 5/17/2013

My beautiful 11 year old yellow lab is now on his death bed with mast cell cancer because of this place. 2 years ago he developed a cough that was asked about several times within the 2 years as it got worse. Dr Hensen insisted it was "old age" every time with no further concern, suggestions, or options to rule anything else out. Within the past couple of weeks, he had strange swelling on his paws, ears, violent vomiting, no appetite, and diarrhea. Every test imaginable was done with no abnormal results, and several trips back and fourth totaling well over $1,000.00 just within the past couple of weeks. Not once were x-rays suggested. We were given several different medications. One that if you can believe it, made him worse. He had every side effect of this medication. So we took him off to get it out of his system. Brought him back and she was insistant on keeping him on these meds that made him even more violently ill. No way. After 2 weeks and well over $1,000.00 later with more

VET ALMOST KILLED MY PUPPY 12/4/2010

DO NOT BRING YOUR ANIMALS HERE. I have reported these people to the attorney General and the better business bureau. They almost killed our dog. 6 months of misdiagnosis and misguiding us, and taking all of our money and we found out what was wrong by googling it and taking him to another vet. Our puppy is on his death bed and these people are sitting pretty on our money. Please whatever you do...do not bring your animals here. more

Somers Veterinary Hospital is Wonderul! 9/30/2009

I brought my rescued cockatoo to Somers Vet. Dr Hensen and her staff were caring and committed to helping my seriously injured bird. It took 3 years and sometimes daily visits, but Dr Hensen brought my smart, funny and happy Lola back to health. I cannot say enough nice things about Dr Hensen and her friendly, knowledgeable staff. more

Great Vet!!! 6/7/2009

I have taken three dogs and one parrot there and Dr. Hensen and her staff can't be beat! She is a through and knowledgeable vet., who takes plenty of time to explain everything to you. She and her staff really love the their patients, you can tell. And since she is the only vet. there, it's like going to your own private doc. rather than a clinic. The staff, who are knowledgeable in their own right, and Dr. Hensen really end up being a valuable resource for even those "stupid" questions you feel welcome to call them for. I wouldn't take my pet anywhere else. more

Top Knotch Vet! 11/1/2008

I had brought my three year old German Shephard to another well-known area vet twice for an ear problem. Each time they cleaned the ear out and said all was well. I wasn't convinced. I then brought her to Somers Vet Hospital where she was diagnosed with a bacterial infection that could have lead to deafness. After treatment all is well again. This vet really cares about the animals she sees whereas the other area hospital is more of an assembly line mentality. Hats off to Somers Vet Hospital! more
