Best

I had cxl'd my contract with another oil company as few years ago, and started ordering oil thru SH&H on an "as needed" basis... I found that this actually saved me $300. - $400....

Worst

Though I've never gotten the warm fuzzies from them, their price at the time I first used them 3 years ago was comparable to everyone else, and they could deliver when I needed it...

disfunctional 4/23/2014

is this guy naturally a jackass or does he work at it ? i have never had a problem with this company untill now. does auto delivery mean you don't have to worry about running out of oil ? absolutely no repore with the customer and doesn't really give a crap.his explanations make no sense at all and actually leaning towards stupid.people just like to call oil companies to see if they'll bring out oil even if you have some just for pure entertainment! cut me a break.the dumbest thing iv'e heard lately.not a consumer friendly or service friendly co. very very disappointed.it's a shame how someone can destroy a well established co run by good folks and totally destroy it. sad. there have been many people reporting this same issue with shellhorn and hill. more

taken for a ride 1/25/2013

until this year i was ok with this company. this year pipes burst going to my heater and the first time they fixed it because it was warm and the did not have a lot of other calls. now that this has happened again because they are overloaded with calls they will not fix it. they took over 7 hours to come to the house and send a very strange little man who did nothing except walk around shaking his head and say there was a lot of plumbing that needed doing and left. the next day they send someone one out and he says he can not fix the problem because he is not a plumber. i am sitting here in 49 deg temps waiting for A independ plumber to cam and see if he can help us. this is a friday and i doubt if we will have heat over the weekend.\r \r DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. THEY ARE ONLY GOOD IN FAIR WEATHER. more

Who needs an oil refill in May??? 6/6/2011

Totally agree with the last poster but my story has a different twist. My balance was down to about $150 plus the cost of a new service contract when they decided last month when it was 80 degrees out to fill my tank with another $700 worth of oil. Again who needs heating oil when it's 70, 80, 90 degrees out???\r \r My family had been using Shellhorn & Hill for over 30 years but not anymore! more

Very customer unfriendly company 5/20/2011

My family has been a customer of Shellhorn and Hill for the past 50 years. We were satisfied up to about 1 year ago. They told me they would not deliver oil until my balance was $0.00. Ok, I'll deal with that......then they delivered $600.00 of oil for the summer. Now who uses oil in May. Nothing like jacking up my balance. BUT money is in their pocket. Looking for another oil company...Have had enough of this company.....any suggestions? more

Great Service, pricing 10/5/2010

I had cxl'd my contract with another oil company as few years ago, and started ordering oil thru SH&H on an "as needed" basis... I found that this actually saved me $300. - $400. per year, and I didn't get hit with a monthly charge in the summer months, like I had been previously. \r Ordering from SH & H makes it very convenient, and when I have a few extra $$, I can order and have it ready when needed.\r \r They will also give you a .05 discount if you pay by credit card - yay! usually, it is the other way around!\r \r Thanks SH&H, you have me as a customer as long as I am in Delaware! more

Many Years of Good Service 8/17/2010

We have had Shellhorn & Hill for many, many years and have always had excellent service. The servicemen are courteous and answer any questions. We have automatic delivery and no problem with it. I highly recommend them. more

Prompt Service 3/3/2010

S&H is the only company out there that will provide service even if you do not have a contract. Our heater broke down late at night & they were the only ones who responded to my call. I will certainly use them again. more

The worse oil company 2/13/2010

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. They told me that I had too much snow in my yard for them to deliver. We shoveled a path for them and they didn't like where we shoveled it. We just had two major storms. more

You lost a customer today 10/16/2009

Though I've never gotten the warm fuzzies from them, their price at the time I first used them 3 years ago was comparable to everyone else, and they could deliver when I needed it. I called yesterday to order 250+ gallons of heating oil because we are very low. They just called and said they had "an emergency" and can't come until tomorrow. (It's early enough in the day that this doesn't make any sense to me when they supposedly have a huge fleet of trucks.) I said we were going to run out and they replied with "Sorry. Do you want to cancel?" I said yes because we WILL run out if we don't get oil today. They said they'd take me off the list. That's it. No remorse, nothing. I guess since I'm not on contract, I am dispensable. I picked up the phone and called Griffith Oil in Nottingham, PA that I'd seen advertising in Cecil Soil Magazine. Not only could they come out today WITHOUT charging me an extra "rush fee" like S&H does, but their price was 11 cents per gallon CHEAPER than the pric more

faithful customer 6/12/2009

Shellhorn & Hill is the best... I wouldn't go anywhere else. They put the customer first... Denise was extremely helpful. I highly recommend their services. more

Down with Shellhorn & Hill 3/4/2009

The Shellhorn & Hill people were nasty to my sister on the phone when she called to have more heating oil in our furnace. As a result, we are taking our business elsewhere and not doing business with these stinkweeds. more

poor customer service 12/14/2008

My boiler broke in October. I was assured that since I had platinum contract, there would be no service charge. The service man came out and was able to tell me I had a leak (I could have told him that since my basement floor was covered in water.) He then shut down the boiler, and left telling me it wasn't safe to operate, and we had to make do with space heaters and the fireplace. I was then sent a bill for $165.00 service charge and told it would cost $5200.00 to replace the boiler. I hired my own service person to install a new boiler for a total of $3500 (parts and labor). I'm looking for a new oil company- any suggestions? more

Great Service Always the cheapest by at least 20 cents!! 10/7/2008

I have been using shell horn and hill for 4 years now and every time i go to get my tank filled i call around first to check prices as i am not on automatic delivery and shellhorn has always remained the cheapest and they always come the next day never once had a problem staff is always very friendly Would Recommend to anybody more

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH SHELLHORN & HILL 6/20/2008

My contract was set to expire in July. I called b/c my tank was not full and wanted it to be full until the price per gallon went up by about $2. I was informed that if they came out a $20 charge would be assessed if I didn't need 168 gallons. I checked the oil tank to ensure the amount of gallons and it was no where near 168 gallons. I called right back, about 10 minutes later, spoke to a Customer Service Representative and canceled my request. Well, they came out the next way to fill the tank anyway and charged my account the $20. I called and they said it was a valid charge even though I called to cancel. Please take your business elsewhere! $20 is $20, I called to cancel. They made the mistake by coming out. I should not be charged the $20. more

Bad Service 6/4/2008

Shellhorn and Hill used to be good about 6 years ago, now their service stinks. we have ran out of oil 2 times this winter and another time last winter and we have automatic delivery. Their employees are not helpful and do not provide a discount when you run out of oil. I think we should boycott them and get another service so we can put them out of business! more

They were their to help me when I needed it most! 3/14/2008

My previouse oil company has let me down on several occasions (only making service calls duringthe week, from 10am - 4pm, not very condusive for working people.\r Shell Horn assisted me when my furnace was clogged, extremely nice phone dispatch people, and even though they charge a same day fee of $10.00, they made a delivery within just a few hours of my emergency request. \r I now order my oil from them on a regular basis, and have cancellend my contract with my previous oil company. more

Automatic Delivery???? 3/11/2008

Shellhorn and Hill is oblivious to what customer service is. I had to call for my automatic delivery, and then they wanted to charge me an extra $10 ontop of the over $3 a gallon price for same day delivery.\r Their drivers and service people are great, sorry they work for such a p*** poor company. more

cold blast 11/24/2007

They were supposed to deliver oil after paying them, the oil man never showed up and on top of that they wanted me to pay another $170.00 to have 10gal. worth of oil put into my tank. the lady I spoke to told me to put Diesel fuel in the tank to hold me. When I asked to speak to someone over her, she replied that no one (management) would be in until Monday. This sounds like a channel 10 investigation report. more

I cancelled them today 2/22/2007

Luckily I monitor my oil tank, so I contacted shellhorn & hill requesting a delivery ( even though I'm on automatic delivery and I'm being charged so that I don't have to request it ). Next I found Alger Oil, who charges about 20 cents gallon less than shellhorn & hill...not to mention their service contract is cheaper. \r \r Service wise I've been relatively pleased with shellhorn & hill, but valuewise (ie. what you pay vs what you get ) I think there are better options out there. more

Shellhorn & Hill Meltdown 2/22/2007

The recent forecast cold blast obviously was not understood by Shellhorn & Hill - we ran out of fuel when we were on automatic delivery. When called, the operator said we were not the only ones - that was a big help and did not make us comfortable with that news. The rep came in 1-1/2 hrs. He was disgusted with his employer as well said it should not have happened. When we called Shellhorn & Hill they did not even apologize when asked what they were going to do...they said nothing if you don't like it you can go elsewhere. We were 30 yr. customers. Their service is lousy, their customer service is nonexistent and they won't even return a call. Oh, in 1995 we ran out twice in the same season - we should have moved on then. Don't go there. Low class operation and unprofessional. more

Shellhorn & Hill Inc

Owner Message
  • Founded in October of 1931 by Andrew Shellhorn and Harry Hill, Shellhorn & Hill, Inc. was born of the vision to be a leader in the industry by anticipating the ever changing needs of the customer while providing exceptional service. One of their first accomplishments was to bring the new technology of oil fired furnaces to the Wilmington area to replace the then standard coal furnace. Oil provided incredible convenience compared to the coal furnace by creating a much cleaner environment and eliminating the need to stoke the fires every few hours, day and night. Although Andrew Shellhorn sold his portion of the company to Harry in the 1940's the focus on progressive thinking continued. Creating opportunities to become more efficient is a constant in today's business world but was in the forefront at Shellhorn & Hill as far back as the 1940's. Seizing the opportunity to utilize otherwise unused oil trucks in the warm Summer months, Shellhorn & Hill started delivering liquid lawn fertilizer to its customers, effectively creating a market opportunity previously untapped while more efficiently utilizing their resources and manpower. The idea of being more than a one dimensional company was well before it's time. But efficiency was not the only focus, providing exceptional customer service has been a constant for the last seven decades. From the inception of the company through the 1960's diesel fuel and gasoline were delivered by hand in ten gallon pails to local businesses and farms. Those same customers enjoyed the convenience of custom motor oils blended and canned to specifically meet the customer's requirements. Continuing to endeavor to meet customer demands, Shellhorn & Hill branched out into the retail gasoline market. With their first station opening in the 1950's under the Calso name, the company evolved with the times to open stations under the Chevron, Gulf and BP brands as well. After thirty years of providing both heating oil services and retail gasoline, the Hill family decided to focus all of their energy on the heating oil segment of the business thus phasing out the retail gasoline services. Although the company has evolved through the years to meet customer needs, Shellhorn & Hill's current focus is the same as it has always been, providing residential heating oil sales as well as heating and air conditioning installation and repair services. Many things have changed over the years but several constants have remained. The ability to pass daily operations from generation to generation has allowed Shellhorn & Hill to continually grow its innovative programs and provide continuity of service and direction in an industry where many companies are sold or absorbed by large discounters where service takes a back seat to profits. With the fourth generation of the Hill family now involved in daily operations the company philosophy is the same as it was when Shellhorn & Hill was founded in 1931: To be a leader in the industry by anticipating
