I think I was there on the SAME night as Tess! I was compelled to write - That's so funny how you described the aloof bartender and his too-cool little assistant. I totally agre...

great vibe, great drinks, great tunes 2/14/2006

I stumbled upon shebeen by accident a few months ago and it has quickly become my favorite drinking spot. If you're looking for an unpretentious, laid back lounge where the music is always great - the djs all play records you won't hear anywhere else - the bartenders are super nice, and the specialty martinis, painstakingly prepared from the freshest ingredients, are like nothing you've ever tasted, you'll find it here. more

Don't Go Here 2/5/2006

I don't understand how people say the martinis are good here. I ordered a regular martini & their "special" flavored martini... terrible and expensive. The staff was rude and with bad music blaring my friend and I were unable to have a conversation. There are a lot of good bars in the area. I would definitely skip this place. more

What tunnel did you crawl out of? 5/25/2005

Mott street, in SOHO, in NYC...a little out of the way? I found the drinks to be good in the all around enjoyable little lounge. Sipping a martini, while surrounded by interesting people, in a nice bar thats not overly crowded, was fine by me. My experience with the bartenders there was nothing but pleasurable. On busy nights bartenders tend to mirror their clientele. So on your next big night on the town you should bring your A-game--and then maybe you'll get theirs. more

cool place cool people 9/6/2004

I like this place because it's not a SCENE. The crowd is comfortable, yet also very hip, young and good looking. It's a beautiful space and the lychee martini is my favorite (yummy). The DJs play really good music - not your typical friday night rap and top 40 played in the rest of manhattan. I go out a lot, but i'd say i have most of my best nights at shebeen! Pros: good crowd, beautiful space, great music more

A good thing 3/7/2004

On Thursday night, I drank a Pumpkin Pie martini shaken by a bartender as dry and unique as his drinks, in a place as familiar and as timelessly cool as George Michael's 'Faith' that the good ol' DJ was playing in the background. Totally hip, totally unpretensious, utterly addictive. Shebeen's got it right. more

SOHO's secret spot! 10/19/2003

This SOHO find draws a trendy unpretencious crowd and the friendly staff were always around to ensure my glass was never empty! Music was funky and atmosphere electric! If you are looking for a great place to hang out and have a good time in NYC check out Shebeen. more

Shebeen's good to me 10/14/2003

If you're looking for an extremely comfortable bar with great drinks, an attractive (yet not scenester) crowd, hospitable and cute waitstaff (no food but taking out to eat in the bar is more than welcome, and they'll provide menus), good music, and located in a great neighborhood, this is the place to be. Don't forget to ask about the "secret" room in the back. A great addition to the area. Pros: Hot waitstaff, Great drinks, Great atmosphere more

Great drinks 6/29/2003

I found this place on a saturday night. Everyone seemed very cool and friendly, good sort of gay crowd, and totally hot bartenders. They had drinks with stuff I've never heard of. more

  • The Scene
Inspired by the old-fashioned speakeasies of South Africa, this welcoming locale is sparsely decorated and dark--it's dimly lit by a single wall of fluorescent lights and an assortment of candles on tiny tables sprinkled about the bar. In warmer months, the ceiling fans' ineffectiveness can make it mighty hot.

    The Draw
An unusual assortment of African tribal music and hip-hop blares loud and proud from the speakers as the barely legal crowd taps its feet to the beat. Bartenders prepare the drinks fresh, even crushing the raspberries right before your very eyes for a raspberry-mint martini--a heavenly mix of muddled mint and raspberry vodka with a splash of raspberry tea and a dash of lime. The drinks are costly, but well worth the expense.
