Love the place. Great value. Great service and excellent French food. more

Awsome French Restaurant 7/22/2008

I've become a bit of a fanatic for French food as of recently, so I was eager to try this one out. I really really liked this restaurant because it is unpretentious. The staff was really nice and helpful and, for me, that goes a long way. I don't want to be just another table. That said, the food was great...mainly becuase it was simple. There is nothing worse than food made fancier than it is. It was perfect. I really enjoyed it. Highly recommended. Pros: simple french cuisine Cons: tad small more

fantastic winelist 6/24/2008

I recently revisited this an old favorite restaurant of mine and I was pleasantly suprised that things were just as wonderful if not better than I remembered. The wine list has been expanded and it was quite tempting just to drink the night away, but I resisted the impulse and ordered a meal. The celery root appetizer special was presented beautifully and was delicious. The steak frites, my favorite, was cooked to perfection, the meat, well seasoned and tender; the frites, delightfully thin and crisp with just the right touch of salt. The service was polite, prompt and attentive. The atmosphere warm and welcoming. I look forward to my next midtown meeting to share this hidden gem of a restaurant with my colleagues. Well Done, Sel et Poivre more

I Take Back my Good Review from 2005! 6/11/2008

I wrote a good review for Sel et Poivre but I take it back after my friend and I were totally ignored for almost the entire meal on a Saturday afternoon when the place was empty. The waitstaff sat around folding napkins, it took 20 minutes to get a salad (it was lettuce people, on a plate, just lettuce!), and then another 30 minutes at least to get our main course, which should have taken no longer than 10 or 15 minutes to cook. The waiter never came over to see if we wanted anything, we kept having to grab the stray busboy that happened to be walking by if we needed anything, and it was just a very disappointing experience in a place I used to like. Customers should not be neglected just because they come in at an off hour and there are napkins to be folded. Pros: Food, cute place Cons: Almost the worst service I've ever had more

Best Traditional French 8/15/2007

This is one of my favorite spots in Midtown. The menu is classic french bistro. I almost always get the onion soup (great) and steak frities, but have had other dishes, which have all been good. Tables by the windows are the best. The service is prompt and the atmosphere is friendly. Pros: Excellent value, Excellent staff more

great customer service 8/8/2007

heres a place that you cant find enough of in the city . this cute little friendly bistro is such a pleasant pleasure to go to. our waitress was so attentive , always had a great smile on her face and the food was out standing. we highly recomend it. the prices are right and the portions are good size.celeryroot and beet salad, chilled whole artichoke and skate fish. omelttes , pasta , sandwiches , steak and the best cold poached salmon around and vichysoise soup, try it Pros: service excellent Cons: stairs to rest rooms more

Service was terrible 4/17/2007

While the ambiance was very pleasant and the food was good, the service was terrible. There were not many patrons in the restaurant at the time and we never saw our waitress after our orders arrived. She never checked back to see if we needed anything and we had to finally ask for our checks. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Service terrible more

Cozy French Bistro with Great Food & Service 2/5/2007

My wife and I live in the city and often like to dine out. One of our favorite restaurants is Sel et Poivre. The ambiance is charming, the wait staff is attentive, and the food is consistently excellent. The Prix Fixe dinner is a great value. We enjoy going there and highly recommend it. Pros: Service, Food, Value & Atmosphere more

Save your money! 10/22/2006

I went to Sel et Poivre for lunch this past weekend, and was anything but impressed. The restaurant was practically empty (which should have been the first sign on a Saturday afternoon), so we thought we'd enjoy a lovely intimate meal. Just the opposite occurred .... My party of four were ignored by the wait staff for 15 minutes, and when I finally flagged someone down to take our drink order, the waiter was rude and unfriendly. We noticed that they were all congregated by the bar - doing what, we had no idea. Another party who arrived some time after us received their drinks and bread before we did! Only after I had to ask for bread was it given to us. We ordered from the Prix Fixe Menu, plus extra appetizers, and the food was average at best. We were virtually ignored when we wanted refills of our drinks because the wait staff was always near the bar. I asked to speak with a Manager, who ended up being one of people hanging out up front. Fed up, we left dissatisfied and disgusted by their incompetent staff. Customer service is surely lacking at this French bistro. Cons: terrible service, average food, unfriendly management more

Nice, but nothing special 6/27/2006

This place is very cute, but after reading the reviews I was expecting it to be better. The ambience is very nice. The Service was excellent, and everything was great until the food came. Actually appetizers were not bad too, but the entrees were so-so. We were a large group and everyone ordered something different. The only person who was really happy about her meal ordered snails and was raving about them whole night. I haven't tried so can't say. I was looking forward to eating my creme brulee but they burnt it. :( The bill came out to be great, not expensive at all. So I guess you get what you paid for. Pros: Setting, Service Cons: average food more

Great Friendly Service 6/25/2006

I visited Sel et Poirve this past Saturday. I was not too familar with restaurants in the area and took a chance on this one. I was instantly impressed when I walked in for my 8pm reservation. I said I was waiting for my dinner companion and they promply sat me at the bar and offered me a class of wine. They asked where I would like to be seated. The menu had a good assortment of dishes. The grilled Salmon was excellent and my companions Steak and Frittes looked equally as good. We were not rushed but the servers were available for our needs. The owner was at the bar when we were leaving and personally thanked us, which is virtually unheard of at most restaurants in NY especially one that you never been to before. We were treated as family. I will surely be back very soon and will also recommend this restaurant to all my friends. Pros: Great service, great food more

Great cozy restaurant 1/21/2006

My husband and I ate here last Thursday. I've lived in the neighborhood for a few years and passed by a few times but have not been inside. We decided to try it and I'm very glad we did. I think it may become one of my standards. I had the steak au poivre which was really flavorful and filled me up! My husband had the monkfish and he couldn't stop raving about it. Overall it was a great meal at a great price. My only complaint might be the beer selection - they didn't really have any dark beers, which I like to have with a steak. But all in all I'm sure we will be back again. Great place for an uncomplicated weekday meal. Pros: great food, good prices, cozy more

Excellent Value 7/29/2005

My husband and I wandered into this charming restaurant quite by accident. We were strolling along Lex looking for a place to eat. We were very pleasntly surprised by the charm and warmth of the place. The ambience reminded me of a French bistro. The food was on the casual side. I particularly liked the chicken. My husband had the sirloin which was also excellent. By far the desserts were outstanding. The creme brulee was great. The owner happened to be there that night and she came to our table to welcome us and make us feel at home. In all the service and food were outstanding and the resturant provided great value for the money. We highly recommend it. Pros: amabience, food, value more

Good Value 5/30/2005

Food is very good. Service is very good. Not too crowded and tables have a decent amount of space between. Casual atmosphere with fine cuisine. more

Cozy Little Bistro 4/6/2005

What's wrong with the people who don't like this place? It's a cozy little secret spot on the Upper East Side. I have been there several times and every time the food is delicious, the service is great, and the people seem like they are happy to have you come in. This is the kind of little place that's not trendy but it's very inviting and a pleasant place to eat. The fish soup with croutons and garlic mayo is wonderful and the skate is deliciouis. They will substitute sides for you on main dishes and are nice about it. The brunch has a couple of different options and is an excellent value. There may be a lot of older people dining in Sel et Poivre and that helps make it very homey and comfortable. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere more

Excellent! 6/19/2004

My wife and I dined at Sel et Poivre last night. We also enjoy L'Absinthe, but were drawn to Sel et Poivre by the Carmelized Onion Goat Cheese Tart & the Duck Magret. Both delicious! Drinks and desserts were also outstanding, as was the service. Highly recommended. Pros: food, service more

French Fast Food 6/15/2004

This is by far the worst place that considers itself a restaurant I have ever eaten in my life. Yeah its cheap, but you pay for that in the lack of quality and flavor in the food. The chicken is simply a piece of roasted chicken you would expect at Boston Market with frozen french fires. I don't know why I went to this place. I was looking for a bargain and that is always when you get robbed--when you're trying to get something for nothing. The chocolate cake that I had was really really good, but it was more like deep chocolate Moroccon style cake than anything you would expect to find in France. I'm pretty sure that everything else is middle easten style ""French"" food here, too. If you want french food--spend a little more money and go somewhere else. Pros: NOTHING! Cons: , I was too cheap that, night more
