We were treated extremely rudely by Manager 1/13/2011

San Gabriel used to be one of my favorite places to go. We arrived for dinner at approximately 8:15 and were told that we had 5 minutes to order. We ordered right away and received our food in a timely manner. After we finished the bus boy took our food away so fast we were unable to have our leftovers packed up. We asked the waitress and she said she would send over the manager. The manager came over and asked us what the problem was and myself and friend began to speak. He was short and accused us both of having different stories as to what happened and then said he would give us 20% off the bill and that we were to leave as they were closed. He basically threw us out at not even 9:15 pm. He was actually scary . I called the next day to speak to the owner and the same manager answered the phone and basically hung up on me saying the owner was not there. We will never go there again because of the way were treated. The man is close to threatening. more

Terrible service, bad chips, drinks and food. Don't go. 3/16/2008

I've dined at San Gabriel once before, about a year ago, and enjoy my experience. This time, however, things had changed for the worse. We arrived for dinner at 7:00 on a Friday night. We were told there would be a 5 minute wait, which was fine. After about 10 minutes we were shown to our table, an overflow room outside the main dining area. The room was ok, I guess, but lacking in the charm and atmosphere of the main dining area. Once there, we waited, and waited and waited. There was no service. After about 15 minutes someone came to pour water. Over the next 20 minutes two different waitresses arrived, each asking to take an order. We ordered guacomole for an appetizer. It took another 20 minutes before we finally had to flag someone down to see if they forgot our order. Finally someone came to make the guacomole tableside. For something that was to be enjoyable to watch, they ran through the exercise as if they should have been in the kitchen area. There was no showmanship at all Just combine ingredients, mash and throw on the table. The chips were poor, tasted stale. We ordered margaritas which were very poor. The waitress was nice, and offered to bring new ones, but each time they tasted terrible. We ordered and waited forever. At one point, after 30 minutes had gone by after ordering, with no sign at all of any service, I had to go into the main dining area to talk to the manager. He listended, but didn't seem to really care. He just said, ""thanks for telling me, I hope it isn't like this next time you come here"". We waited some more and our food finally arrived. If it was good, I wouldn't have taken the time to post a review, chalking it up to a bad night. But the food was not good at all. I ordered the Mahi mahi and it tasted as if it has been caught a week ago. The other meals were not enjoyed either. All in all, the service was the worst I had seen, the chips were stale, the margaritas were terrible and the food was bad. Pros: Good guacomole. Cons: Terrible service, chips, margaritas, food more

  • San Gabriel is an upscale Mexican restaurant, in which the tortillas are made in-house, the margaritas are made with fresh lime juice and the guacamole is prepared before your eyes. A server rolls a wooden cart to the table and mashes up some fresh guacamole in a jiffy, pausing only to inquire about spice-level preferences. Elsewhere on the appetizer list, a fruity guajillo salsa dresses up pieces of grilled octopus; Tuna ceviche, brightened by bits of mango and passionfruit, tricolor chilies and mint, is smooth and delicious, with a bit of spice to the finish. Milder, but still satisfying are roasted duck taquitos, rolled in soft tortillas with grilled pineapple and queso fresco. Pasilla peppers and toasted tomatoes lend depth and body to a smooth, bisque-like tortilla soup, topped with a mound of cheese, avocado and a dollop of cream. Entrees include a well done red snapper en Veracruzana; red snapper stands up well to the tomato, onion and pepper sauce that engulfs it. Tropical Bites, a melange of grilled shrimp, scallops and calamari surrounding a papaya-mango salad, is essentially an entree salad, good for light appetites. Huitlacoche, the earthy and sweet fungus that grows on corn, is the star ingredient in a rolled chicken breast that's dressed with a tangy poblano-chile sauce. And a delicious pork chop is bathed in manchamanteles, a sweet-sour mole that combines ancho chile with pineapples, pears and apples. The star entree is dubbed molcajete, the dish named for the vessel that contains it. A molcajete is a large bowl carved from volcanic rock; the Chef uses it as a stewpot, cooking steak, chicken or shrimp in a bubbly mix of tomatoes, onions, sweet peppers and three-chile salsa. It's really a very simple dish with a lot of visual flair; the mad-hot molcajete is virtually a volcano by itself, actually spitting out droplets of broth. Desserts include a fine tres leches (three milks) cake and a chocolate tamal, A flamed bananas dish--a s
