The San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Museum of Art features, in my opinion, the greatest selection of art. The pieces are very ecletic and range from great impressionistic pieces to contemporary and cubist art. They have several rotating exhibits that change ever three or four months, and I make an effort to see each new one as it passes through. Admission is free on Tuesdays, but if you can't make it that day (it's usually really busy anyway, especially during the summer), it's well worth the price to stop in anytime. It's a great first exposure to art for children, as the museum is more child-friendly than most. more

I wouldn't say this is one of my favorite museums, but if you are into art than its definetly worth checking out. And if your not sure if you want to spend the money, go on a Tuesday because it's free! more

If you run and don't walk to the San Diego Museum of Art before September 11th, you can catch the Maxfield Parrish "Master of Make Believe" exhibit, for the unbelievably low price of 10 bucks. If you an find a better way to spend 10 bucks, I can't imagine what it would be. This is San Diego oldest and largest art museum. In addition to traditional art pieces you may find in an art museum (European and American art), they invite a lot of contemporary artist to come and display their art. These artists would use the existing walls and windows to install their art! Recently they have an exhibit from Maxfield Parrish which is quite nice. I definitely recommend going there to see that exhibit. more

The San Diego Museum of Art is the region largest and oldest art museum. They have an extensive collection of European art, 19th and 20th century American art, and a fine collection of Asian art. Additionally, like any art museum, they have rotating exhibits. Currently they have the art of Maxfield Parrish, the most published and recognizable American artist. Going on one of the docent tours is the best way to learn all about Parrish. On a recent visit, I got to learn about his life and the subjects of most of his art pieces (oak trees and Sue Lewin). Definitely worth a visit. more

San Diego Museum of Arts is a great museum to visit. It’s so interesting and they have the rarest artifacts. I love this museum because it’s easy going and very friendly. It was one of the best times I had ever had at a museum which you have to admit is very hard to do at a museum but the people are great and everything turned out really cool! more

I love to see this art museum again & again as it is one of the best Art museums I have come across. The art pieces are really descriptive of some mystic story & there is something for everyone to ponder upon. I like the contemporary art on display that lets your mind to wander on different aspects of life from your past. more

I wasn't very impressed with this museum. They try very hard to be your "cultured" and "classy" art museum, but I didn't find their art all that cultivating. The museum is part of balboa park (an excellent place for all sorts of people), but the museum itself is definetely not family friendly (something I think most balboa attractions attempt to be). more

This museum chronicles multiple stories in the art that it displays. Each piece captures your mind and soul, and you begin to wonder about the artist and his motives. When i walked through, i was amazed at the talent in our city, and was impressed. The art is presented in unique ways throughout the museum, and provides sort a refuge from life. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys fine and contemporary art. My experience here was amazing, and I bet yours will be too. more

The Museum of Art is located within the pedestrial mall area of Balboa Park, in a charming building. On certain Tuesdays of the month, you can visit it for free. The gallery space is fairly small, and the exhibits do not rotate very often. On the upside, this means that it is a very manageable gallery, meaning you don't feel overwhelmed by too many works of art, or feel the need to rush through it in attempt to see everything. This is not a modern art museum -- the most "modern" of pieces is from the early 20th century, with most of the art work collection dating much farther back than that. There is a fairly large religious painting section upstairs. Architecturally speaking, the building is beautiful -- wide, open and very grand. There is an outdoor sculpture garden as well. The museum store has interesting books and souvenirs as well. more

The San Diego Museum of Art is one of the lovely museums in Balboa Park. It is not a large museum, but the admission is decent (about $10 for adults and about $7-8 for students). They have an extensive collection of art from around the world including Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Even the structure of their building is art; the architecture is beautiful. more

The San Diego Museum of Art is one of the only free museums within Balboa Park. However, I found it to be one of the most stuffy as well. I understand an art museum needed guards to make sure patrons to do not touch the pieces. It is not necessary for them to be rude though. This being said, the museum does have some impressive art. Do not expect to spend all day here, but give it a try. more

The last exhibit we saw at the San Diego Museum of Art was the Grandma Moses exhibit. Even though I previously had no interest in her folk art works, the museum presents her pieces in such a way the observer feels compelled to be involved with the artist's work. The museum is very large, encompassing several stories of different eras from modern to renaissance. The museum offers discounts if you sign up for an annual membership or have a student affiliation. more

If you have not been to this museum you should really check it out. While it may seem a little bit expensive to an outsider, once you enter the building you will see what you paid for, and more! I had never been to an art museum before and this place blew my mind. Highly enjoyable! more

The San Diego Museum of Art has an interesting and diverse collection of pieces. One of the exhibits they have right now is called Sandow Birk: Leading Causes of Death in America. I really like Birk's etchings. They are based on lithographs and prints of older artists. I thought they were fun to look at and they were interesting because they take a comical look at very serious issues. They also have an asian art exhibit right now which I wasn't very fond of. There permanent collections are a good mixture of European, American, Asian and Contemporary arts. There is also a lot of religious art. I would definitely recommend that everyone that is in San Diego go spend a few hours enjoying this museum. more
