Best

This restaurant has some pretty old reviews on here and I must say that I absolutely love this place! Their crab cakes and halibut never seem to dissapoint me and the Cioppino is ...

Worst

I'd heard that Sammy's had changed ownership, but didn't believe anything had changed until I visited it recently. Some of the dishes were the same, but the quality was terrible--...

RIP Sammy's 3/21/2007

Used to be a great place for breakfast, or sitting outside and peoplewatching, but it's gone now - apparently they went under and now the building's occupied by some crazy r3dneck bar, complete with peanut shells on the floor. Come back, Sammy! more

As long as the smell of cigarette smoke doesn't bother you... 12/2/2006

We had a delicious breakfast with good service in the restaurant, but we could smell cigarette smoke from the bar. It was not obnoxious or anything, but it was noticable. I would go back, but I probably would not bring a young child again. Pros: Great location, good food and good service Cons: Smell of cigarette smoke more

Crab Cakes are DELECTABLE! 10/23/2006

This restaurant has some pretty old reviews on here and I must say that I absolutely love this place! Their crab cakes and halibut never seem to dissapoint me and the Cioppino is another must try. Go there on any night and you will not be left unhappy. I have spent Valentine's Day and birthdays at this restaurant and trust me, it is WORTH it! more

Really gone downhill 8/27/2006

I'd heard that Sammy's had changed ownership, but didn't believe anything had changed until I visited it recently. Some of the dishes were the same, but the quality was terrible--overcooked steak and vegetables cooked beyond recognition. Very few people there, and I can see why. The waiters and waitresses all looked like they'd rather be elsewhere, and, after that horribly overpriced dinner, so would I. Don't be fooled by the great location and the once-great Sammy's name--this place has gone downhill, and fast. Pros: location Cons: parking, overpriced food more

what happened to Sammy's? 7/19/2005

A few years back I used to really love going to Sammy's for a relaxing and enjoyable weekend breakfast. I moved out of the neighborhood but was back recently and looking forward to returning to Sammy's. Wow was I in for a shock!!! The food was barely edible and totally overpriced. It seems that the quality just is not there anymore. What a disappointment. I will never be back. more

Good Breakfast 1/12/2005

Try Breakfast. I've posted other breakfast place reviews, but thus far this is the best spot - maybe not IN Portland, but on 23rd anyhow. If you're dying for Bagels and Locks, call to see if they're stocked first. They're always fresh out when I go. They don't have "real" hasbrowns, which is dissapointing to me, but the potatoes are very good. Try the crab eggs-benedict which is very tasty. The hot chocolate tastes very high quality - not packaged perhaps, but ask for extra whipped cream, as it's usually already melted into the coco. Some days Sammy's is packed and some days there may be two tables filled. My service is always excellent nonetheless. Parking is terrible as is any place you visit on 23rd. Portions suite the price. Pros: large menu selection, people watching, 23rd district more

The Bread was Awesome 2/23/2004

I know I'm supposed to be on the low carb diet, but the bread was just fantastic! It came out warm and fresh baked from scratch. Every person had their own dipping olive oil. I was nearly full by the time my appetizer came. more

It's a shame... 6/9/2003

The food and drinks are great, but the service is pretty bad. Last week a friend and I wanted to have a couple drinks outside. There were two open tables at the end and one right by the busy, loud front entrance. We asked to sit at the end. and were told we couldn't because they were getting ready to close. It was 11:15, they close at midnight. Around 11:30 they sat another party at the table we were denied. A little tip for the managers, hire decent servers if you want your loyal customers to return. Good bread doesn't make up for bad service. more

SPECTACULAR 3/26/2003

I WENT TO SAMMY'S RECENTLY AND HAD A GREAT TIME. I WENT IN FOR LUNCH AND HAD THE CIOPPINO. IT WAS THE BEST I'VE HAD. AND THERE BREAD IS TO DIE FOR. THE SERVICE WAS GREAT. MY SERVER WAS VERY NICE, AND I NEVER HAD TO FLAG HER DOWN. THEY HAVE A FULL BAR, AND EXCELLENT DRINKS. I HAD A BLODDY MARY WITH MY LUNCH. YUM!! I WILL DEFINETLY GO BACK. Pros: great food, great service, good atmosphere more

Best of the Best 10/31/2002

On numerous trips to Portland, we have always eaten at Sammy. It has great food, great service and the best Chef in Portland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love your german pancake, fish selection, and desserts! Pros: Chef, Food, Service more

LOVE the Bread! 8/5/2002

Sammy's does a great job on rich, traditional dishes. I say bring it on! Their bread is fabulous too, not that hard crusty sourdough that every restaurant in Portland serves. Great breakfast offering benedicts with filet mignon, crab cakes or peppered bacon choices...Steak Tartare still lives on their appetizer menu, as does Saganaki which is fried Greek cheese flambeed tableside with brandy. Every time I shop 23rd I tie in a Sammy's visit. The service could be a little friendlier, but I have always found it to be efficient. Pros: Delicious Food, Great Location, Comfortable Cons: On the Expensive Side more

okay 6/14/2002

They are great to go to for lunch. I ordered a cheesburger and fries and was amazed that the waitress asked me how I wanted the meat cooked! They do a wonderful job of making sure that everything is just how you want it! The service was promt, we went before it got really busy. The atmosphere is just right for the type of restaurant that it is. more

Not that great of service 5/23/2002

When my salmon was brought to me very undercooked, my server told me I must not have been too up to date on the new "trend" of cooking fish, she said she couldnt have it re-cooked because the grill was closing, however I saw at least 4 meals come out after mine, no dessert was offered and the salmon, which was not eat was not taken off the bill... she made the experience terrible! Pros: good salad Cons: raw salmon more

  • In Short
Slung long and low at the crest of 23rd, the diner-esque appearance is comfortingly Pacific Northwest. Stained stucco walls illuminated by stained-glass lamps, high-gloss dark wood booths and forest green carpeting give this place a cozy feel. The diner menu features huge portions of seafood fettuccine, rib eye and lamb chops broiled with herbs and finished with Madeira sage sauce. Lunch and brunch feature classic fare, including sandwiches and the signature Sammy's Burger.
