S AMMY'S PIZZA - EST. 1954 As World War II soldiers returned home from Italy telling tales of their favorite food, the popularity of pizza in the U.S. grew. Sam Perrella, a former miner who owned a small caf in Keewatin, picked up on this growing trend. Having connections in Chicago, Sam visited with some pizza makers and returned home with an idea that sparked and gave birth to what is now Sammys Pizza. In October 1954, armed with enthusiasm and their own secret recipes, Sam and wife, Louise, opened the doors of the first Sammy's Pizza restaurant in Hibbing, MN. Today, some 63 years, 15 locations and more than 20 million pizzas later, Sammy's is now in it's fourth generation of pizza makers, who all use Sams original recipes. In 2015, PMQ Pizza Magazine, the pizza industrys No. 1 publication, inducted Sammys into its Pizza Hall of Fame which pays tribute to popular pizzerias in business for 50 years or longer. OUR LOCATION This is where it all started the family tradition and great taste of Sammys Pizza - in Hibbing, MN. A number of years ago, the restaurant grew and moved across the street and the menu has grown, too, while the traditions remain as strong as ever. Rich and Rachael Chalupsky, who co-own and operate the restaurant, met in college while working at the Grand Rapids location. They stayed in the pizza business and, in 2002, jumped at the chance to partner with Hibbing natives Tony and Kelly Jerulle (owners of Sammy's in Grand Rapids) and Mike and Pam Jerulle (operators of Sammy's in West Duluth) to purchase the Sammy's locations in Hibbing and West Duluth from the retiring, Jeff Perrella.
