I asked Roto-Rooter to scope the sewer line of a house we were under contract to purchase. They quoted me $225 on the phone a week prior. When the plumber showed up at the scheduled time he said the price was $400+ and I said no I was quoted $225. After calling his manager he confirmed the $225. Now comes the fun part. The manager for some reason showed up to the house. They both walk all around the exterior of the house and couldn't find a clean out as the house was old. They said the only way to scope the line is from a roof vent which would cost $400+ because its risky and more work. I said lets check the basement and see if there is a clean out down there. We find a clean out in a cabinet that was very tricky to access. They said they could not get the cap off and would have to go up on the roof. I asked one of the guys for a crescent wrench and a hammer and had to show him how to get the cap off. They scoped the line and finished the job.
The whole time i got the feeling that these guys either didn't want to work or were trying to up charge us. I will not be using them again but if you decide to use them make sure you know more about plumbing then they do.
