Editorial review from Citysearch 12/15/2013

I used to love this store (spend at LEAST $100 each time...on irrelevant but fun goodies)....the past 3 times I have visited the store, the owner screams rudely at his employees..calls them names..etc. Today one of the customers asked him why he was so rude to his employees and the owner kicked him out! I called when I got home and very kindly told the owner that I had felt uncomfortable to approach him (I am a 26 yr old female) but that it was awkward to have children around with him yelling. He told me I was judgmental (I couldn't have been nicer on the phone), I was conceded (?), had never worked a day in my life, and that it was HIS store, HIS little universe, and he can act however he wants to act.\r \r NEVER doing business there again. I don't care how convenient - I love supporting small businesses but will never go back again. more

I regret spending thousands of dollars here! 12/19/2010

Until last night, I used to shop at Richard’s for children’s toys and gifts regularly—for my children’s birthdays, Christmas, and gifts for their friends. I like supporting local businesses and will do so to a fault, even if it means I spend a little more money.\r \r Customer service has never been great a Richard’s. I have noticed their prices are not competitive. I had also noticed their poor treatment of other customers, and turned a blind eye to it. What a mistake!\r \r Last night, in the midst of the holiday shopping season, I took my family to Richard’s to make sure we got everything on the kids’ lists. I told my husband to take the kids to the car while I made some quick purchases. I knew it was getting late, but had not looked at the time recently, nor did I know what time Richard’s closed. As the kids were leaving with my husband, a man shouted loudly, “Turn the lights OFF!” and I looked at my husband and said, “I guess they’re about to close. I’ll hurry.”\r \r I frantically grabbed a basket and started to comb the aisles looking for the 3 gifts my kids wanted. However, I could not see because the lights were off! As I stood in the puzzle aisle trying to see the boxes, an employee came and stood at the end of the aisle and said, “Ma’am, you’ll need to take your purchases to the register now.” I said, “I’m sorry, I can barely see—can you give me just a couple seconds? There are just a few things I need to get and won’t have time to come back this week.” She said, “We’re closing the registers, you need to leave.” WHAT?!?! No offer to help, no apologies, just basically, “Get out.”\r \r A few seconds later I heard the same loud man’s voice saying, “Is there anyone else in here?” I did not answer, but the employee who had just seen me said, “Yes, there is still one customer in here.” Then the man shouted from the front of the store, “You need to leave, the registers are closed now.”\r \r I went to the front, where he was standing, holding the door open, motioning for me to get out. I said, “I can’t believe you are being so rude! I spend hundreds of dollars here every year! I just have a few things…” and he said, “You don’t tell me how to run my business, I don’t tell you how to run yours.” I said, “I’m not, I just don’t understand why you are being so rude! Are you the owner or manager?” and he said, “Lock, stock and barrel!” I asked again, only to get the same nonsense response, TWICE! Then he finally said, “I own the ground you are standing on, and everything around you, now GET OUT, we are closed and these people need to get home!” And I quote!\r \r I was completely mystified. I thought it must have been really late, but when I got to the car (which was parked all the way in the back of the lot), I dug my phone out of my pocket and it was exactly 8:05pm. I was in there a mere 3-4 minutes past closing, most of which time I was being harassed to leave! I honestly felt scared and threatened by this crazy, scary little man who claims to be the owner. I was shaking and dumbfounded.\r \r As much as I hate to say this, I went home, went online to Amazon, found the items there MUCH CHEAPER, got FREE SHIPPING and the items will be here in time for Christmas. So I have no need to ever return to Richard’s.\r \r If you must shop there, be aware of their crappy attitude (as noted by several other reviewers), their return policy and price policy, and the belligerent little man who might just be the owner. And know that you can find their products elsewhere, cheaper, and with less attitude.\r more

Helpful Customer Service! 10/10/2010

Ever went to Walmart and tried to get an opinion from a store associate? How many times were they helpful with recommendations if not directions to find something? Well in this place, this gem of midtown are some of the most fun, and willingly helpful people I have ever met. Everyone who works there has stories to tell and ideas to share. Whether it's trying to find items to stuff in a gift basket for a priest, the perfect gift for a dentist, or the perfect pink cowgirl hat for the latest drag show, these people know what customer service is supposed to be: friendly, helpful, efficient and innovative. more

You've Got To Be Kidding 7/13/2010

I walked into this store as if I could go back to childhood. Richards has this wonderful nostalgic quality to it that anyone, and I mean anyone would love to experience. I always recommend this place to people if they're trying to find a unique gift or throw a themed party. Richards is sure to have whatever you're looking for. I know that there's reviews that try to put down this store by saying there's bad customer service or there's pricing errors. But those problems are RARE. This store is family owned and has been in business since the 1950's they're trying their best to stay organized in these modern times and it's getting harder to compete with those big time stores. I know I've had a few problems but the workers and manager is very helpful in solving any dispute. I've seen customers walk away in a huff because they're too uptight about the little things. I believe that we should try to promote small businesses and give them a chance to serve you. This store is great, just check them out and have an open mind. Pros: Great Selection & Helpful Workers Cons: Have to check in shopping bags more

Terrible customer service 12/3/2009

BEWARE. Terrible customer service. I always try to support local stores and shopped at Richards in the past because of their fun variety. When I went to pay for my item, the price came up $8 more than the clearly marked sticker price. When I questioned this, a very rude curt manager told me that the price in the computer was the correct price and the he wasn't selling it for a penny less. No apology. He actually made me feel like I'd done something wrong. It was a terrible shopping experience and in the future I will be taking my business elsewhere. Do not recommend. \r Pros: good variety of toys Cons: Terrible shopping experience, do not care about customers more
