What's an Arepa? An arepa, a traditional Venezuelian fast food, is a pocket bread made of white corn that's deep fried and stuffed with a variety of ingredients. How Filling Raul Veliz, owner and chef of Rica Arepa, fills his creations with delicious combinations of shredded meats, cheeses and vegetables. The more conservative patron should enjoy the Carne Mechada ($2.75), which contains shredded beef, tomato and onion sauce and proves reminiscent of the Cuban delicacy Ropa Vieja. More adventurous eaters will appreciate the delicate textures of the Reina Pepeada ($2.85), holding a cool mixture of chicken and avocado, or the Pabellon ($2.75), a hearty mixture of beef, black beans and fried plantains. Beyond the Arepa Wanting something other than arepas? Well rest easy. The restaurant also serves such Latino delicacies as empanadas ($1.35 for one), deep-friend Spanish turnovers filled with ground meat, chicken, cheese or fish, and cachapas ($2.50 for a plateful), sweet corn pancakes topped with cheese. Writing on the Wall Rica Arepa's extremely small interior, composed only of three two-person tables, a counter against the back wall and a serving area, can seem daunting at times. But it gets bonus points for its graffiti-covered walls, which exhibit an endless array of praise by fans of the place.
