Lovely Neighborhood Spot 3/3/2009

Always bustling with an older (but not old) respectable looking crowd who seem to be enjoying themselves. Delicious classic French food from the creamy potato and leak soup (oh, so rich!) to the proverbial steak au poivre with frites. This is a great place for brunch, too, as the chef really knows how to make an omelette and also lovely for a drink by the bar even if you're not eating. It has the feel of someplace that would offer a great souffle or decadent chocolate cake for dessert and we were disappointed to find it didn't. But otherwise, it's a little touch of civility in the city. more

Best on the Upper East Side 2/26/2009

Bravo! This is the best kept secret of the UES. I can always depend on an excellent meal and a great drink. The clientele ranges in age and you can tell there are a lot of regulars. The staff is very attentive, but, defintely want to go home by 10pm. more

Great food and service 4/4/2008

I ate there twice in the last two months and I have to say everything I had was terrific. Each of the times I dined at Quatorze I was in a party of five so I planned to sample a bit of several dishes. To start, the waiter handed us very comfortable menus and a mini chalkboard that indicated the specials of the night. She offered us water choices and drinks without being pushy. She displayed a fine knowledge of the offered wines and she was spot on with her suggestions. For appetizers, I opted for a salad with goat cheese and it was out of this world. The goat cheese was the best I have ever tasted. My brother-in-law had a sausage appetizer and liked it so much he wasn't sharing it. I chose and entree of grilled chicken and fries. The chicken was cooked to perfection and simply seasoned and a bit lemony. The skin was crispy and the meat was moist. A small serving of one of the house mustards was placed next to my dish. The fries were amazing and plentiful. Every one was cooked to perfection. Not an easy task. My daughter had the steak and spent most of her meal making these wonderfully satisfied oohs and aarhs. Fortunately, she ran out of steam and I was able to help myself to her delicious steak. We didn't stop there because the dessert offerings were too enticing to pass up. I ordered Profiteroles with vanilla ice cream and a cappuccino steamed with half and half. What a great combination!! My brother in law came alive with the apple tart (visually very beautiful). He wasn't sharing that either. I was there on a Tuesday and the open dining room was buzzing with an ever changing flow of diners. I will certainly return there to try some different dishes. Although, it will be hard to choose a different dessert. Pros: Great food, generous portions, fun atmosphere ,attentive cheerful service and good value Cons: can't think of any more

MOST ARROGANT RESTAURANT ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE 3/13/2008

Having enjoyed many meals in the past at Quatorze Bis I was disappointed that the goat cheese on my salad was spoiled. The server immediatly offered to replace my appetizer and brought a delicious warm bacon vinnegrette salad. I was charged the more expensive price and was furious. I said nothing except to the matre'd, who only cared that the rest of his customers of the evening had fresh goat cheese. SHAME ON YOU for not being kind to your regular clientele. OVER PRICE WINE $16 for a small glass, over priced meals, and sub-standard service for the price is the fare at this east side favorite. Pros: good food on occassion Cons: OVER PRICED more

It is neighborhood at its finest 6/22/2007

Jane and I decided to go some place new in the neighborhood and had walked past Quatorze a few times, this time we stopped in. What fun! "Dr. Jim" (our name for him) the bartender new greeted us as old friends and had no problem getting fresh mint for Jane's Perfect Manhattan. The older crowd takes away the seen and be seen aspect and the food.....oh my gosh.....the food is so comfortable and good and is ALWAYS.....good. We had oysters the first time.....and then one evening on the specials menu was a charcuterie tasting plate that had a foie gras that I wanted to bury my face in.....sooooo good! Always a crisp white wine or a lovely red.....on special at a great price. And you would love the decor with the great reproductions of french travel posters etc....the long and short of it is that we walk past the wonderful place no more....we walk right inside. Pros: An all round great French restaurant Cons: Can't think of one more

Still a lovely spot on the UES. 9/13/2006

I stopped in for dinner with my girlfriend. The place was packed with attractive, seemingly content, older diners. It's a simple place with a small, attractive bar at the entrance and nice size charming main dining room. We sat at the one table that opens to the street, in front of the small bar. That was fun. After some delicious oysters, we enjoyed a nice green salad with mustard vinaigrette, the delicious arctic char entree with (superb) mashed potatoes and some unfortunately bland brocolli & cauliflowers on the side. We finished with the tasty apple tart. With drinks and coffee the bill came to $100 ($24 for the oysters alone). The service was excellent. more

My boyfriend and I recently went to Quatorze for a Friday night date - the service was excellent! I had the wonderful goat cheese salad and roasted chicken with cous cous, which was on the specials menu. A very nice evening; I would recommend it for a quiet dinner with family or a date - a good UES spot. more

Neighborhood Gem 4/13/2004

Great bistro food, with a warm neighborhood feel. The staff is attentive and friendly, and the food is excellent. It might be a bit expensive, but all the intangibles make it worthwhile. Pros: Food, Atmosphere more
