The Scene
Pinky Naiditch, his wife Terry, and two of their eight sons are constantly moving through the dining areas or Platters, checking to assure quality, and schmoozing with diners. The walls are adorned with photographs of old Pittsburgh taken by Teenie Harris, and there's jazz from the '30s and '40s playing softly in the background.
The Food
There are three types of food served here: Chinese, Eastern European, and deli. The deli features the standard sandwiches-corned beef, roast turkey, etc.-as well as an unusual and unique concoction called pastrami vivace which is grilled pastrami served with sauteed green olives, onions, and mushrooms, topped with fried eggplant cubes.
Not Just Kosher
The Eastern European menu runs towards meat dishes with gravy and a starch, and lighter chicken and pasta dishes. The bulk of the menu is Chinese, with both Cantonese and Szechuan dishes. Try the black pepper chicken, a Cantonese dish featuring sliced chicken with snow peas, mushrooms, pineapple, and onions in a spicy pepper sauce. And no matter the main cuisine, do not leave without tasting Terry Naiditch's excellent pecan or apple pies.
