Plato's Closet

Invest in bags for the customers. I was there over labor day weekend and the cashier mentioned that they didnt usually have bags which i found extremely odd. Now I am almost weary to go back in unless i brought my own bags. Last time I went there, I bought quite a lot and plan to buy much more. Would not want to go back w/o bags more

I am a former employee at Plato's closet. In all reality I know how they buy the clothing from people and it's kind of sketchy. I was a buyer and if I bought anything ""Outdated"" I would get ""Talked to about it"" like it was some high end store. I don't even see how any of the people who work their can even judge what to buy and what not to. The owner, manager and assistant manager have NEVER had any job besides Plato's closet. So how do they know whats in trend and not??? Before I was employed their I worked for American Eagle Nordstrom etc. So by the end of my employment there I know I had taken 10 steps back by working in a such a cheap unorganized messy place. Anyway I just don't see how you can possibly run that store with no outside sales and fashion experience?? I would recommend NOT to go there. Unless you want to be stared down by the management, have kids running around like crazy and try to find close in what looks like.. A disastrous closet. Hence.. Plato's Dump! more

Here is some information that hopefully will help reduce future frustrations. Plato's closet sells their merchandise up to 70% off the mall retail which means our clothes aren't selling any were near what you paid for them and we pay 35% of our retail. If your looking to sell your clothes for close to what you purchased them for then try eBay. Trends change constantly, therefore clothes that you bought 12 months ago might not be as trendy anymore. We have very specific style guides that we use when looking at clothing. What we buy is also based on what we have in the store. I hear this all the time, ""Why didn't you buy my shirt you have one just like it in the racks?"". The answer to this question is actually quite simple. When that shirt was purchased it was a style we were looking for but now it is no longer relevant. Also we try to buy what is selling well for us. If we know a style isn't selling well we won't buy it, even if its brand new. The price paid out for the clothing is determined by our computer systems based on used clothing resale. We simply enter the brand and it generates the quote for us. If your interested in selling clothes to Plato's closet its always a good idea to call or come in and see what's on our displays (displays will have the most current styles on them). Keep in mind that we are looking for clothes that someone who is 13-29 would wear, however we do not buy children's sizes. The clothes must be casual free of holes, rips, stains, and other condition problems. Also clothing must be of current style, usually 12 months or newer from the mall stores. When we pass on items it is nothing personal so please do not take it that way. We pass on hundreds of clothing items every week due to condition or style, so that we will be able to provide our customers with gently used clothing at a used clothing price. I went in to sell a few really cute designer (and very expensive) things, and I was so shocked! They only offered me about $2.00 for each garment! What a joke. I told them I'd rather donate them to goodwill and left!!! Their murchandise is ok, but really only the jeans...everything else you'd be better off buying new...Store smells a little, too... I took in 2 pairs of shoes today to see if they would buy them. Before they will even tell you if they will consider your item they require you to provide full name, address, phone number & drivers license. In today’s age of rampant identify theft I see no reason a company would log such personal data before saying if they were interested. I do understand keeping records of how much someone brings in, but requiring a DL number to be logged in their system before they will express interest at all is suspect & target for identity theft hackers. I'd rate lower if I could, but keeps defaulting to 4 stars!! Pros: nope Cons: retain personal data more

I have the same complaint as others here, I brought in a box of less than a year old clothes my sister gave to me to sell. Some Jeans she paid 150+ for and all top name brands in like new condition. They said they were outdated and didn't take anything. The things I did see on the racks were pretty cheap looking, I am sure any teen would LOVE to have a Juicy tank top or True Religion jeans! They must not know their styles or brand names. I found a consignment botique downtown that will be perfect for the clothes, I'm glad now they didn't take them. I went to this second hand store because I had some nice clothes that i cant wear anymore so I thought this would be a great place to bring it to and to get cash for. My clothes are not cheap by far. When I went in they were nice. But as I was walking around waiting for them to look at my clothes I realized that this store is for skinny mini teens. Now if I recall when I was a teen, not every one was a skinny mini and wore tiny clothes looking like tramps. My clothes I brought in were size 14/16 but not teen sizes. Right away I felt I should take my stuff and go somewhere else. Before that happen she called me over to let me know they couldnt take any of the clothes because they were not sized right. I proceeded to let the two behind the counter know that not all teen girls are skinny mini blond bimbos, that there are girls that are 14/16 sizes that want to dress nice, but cant because they cannot afford to wear nice clothes. I recently tried to sell some clothes at Plato's Closet. They accepted nothing. They stated that my clothes were outdated. Granted, I am no longer a teenager, but I am not an old lady! Please tell me when low rise boot cut Calvin Klein jeans went out of style. Or how about gray capri's from Old Navy? I even had super nice, barely worn clothes made and bought in Italy. The clothes that I brought in were no different from what I saw on their racks. Whatever. This place is obviously a place where young gay boys think they are in training for Q**** Eye for the Straight Guy. Pros: pre teens will love it! 2nd-hand shopping is like going on an easter egg hunt-- you'll never know what you'll find rummaging through the playing field. I like Plato's b/c prices are very reasonable (i've gotten nice shirts for $6/ea), clothes are in good condition, and the store is much cleaner and more organized than other 2nd-hand shops (ie: those in downtown pdx). Brand-name denim are organized in separate hanging space for easy find. Additional plus is the ample parking spaces. I've never had a bad experience w/ the workers there-- I'm one of those in-n-out shoppers who doesn't interact w/ workers much anyway. One negative, however, is that Plato's seem to carry lots of Old Navy items. Pros: good value, clean & organized store Cons: redundant brand names (ie: Old Navy) more

they have great designer jeans and the staff is friendly and helpful. the more you bring the longer it takes though, so go early and limit how much you bring! Pros: staff, accessibility, current fashion more

I realize its not Nordstrom but does the 15yr old working at the counter really have to be so rude? Besides the rude attitude prior to even looking at what i had to offer, after they picked the clothes they wanted to buy they made me feel like the stuff they didnt want was just crap. I kept saying its ok ill take it to goodwill but she had to continue on telling me how ""mature"" and old they were in her snotty little tone. Her little attitude ruined my afternoon and from now on all the donations go to goodwill. Cons: Young, Rude, Employees more
