Editorial review from Citysearch 7/19/2012

Where to start, almost 2 years into my employment at Piccolo and being told constantly by staff, clients, and Lisa (owner) herself, that I was truly an asset to the salon and irreplaceable, I was fired. Not only was I fired the day before my birthday, as she smiled at me, I was being fired because she personally didn't want to look at me anymore. I guess my tattoos and piercings (which many I had when I was hired) suddenly offended her. Not once was there a complaint about my personality or work ethics from an employee or client but I was actually being fired for the way I looked. The irony of the whole situation is, the motto above the door and front desk in the salon is actually ""Be Yourself"". Really? Be yourself?? When I confronted Lisa about her motto her answer was "" Oh, I do want you to be yourself, just not here."" Nice. So from day one I came in and put my all into my work, the clients, and her salon and in turn I got the boot for doing what she claims she believes in. Being creative and being myself. Not to mention she selfishly had the nerve to call me, well actually had the new receptionist that replaced me, call me and ask me to walk her through some of my daily tasks..lol i mean, are you serious?? Yesterday, I was informed that one the most amazing stylists at Piccolo, Melody Johnson, was fired after 9 loyal years at Piccolo. Lisa's reasoning for this was not a matter of tattoos and piercings but the fact that ""Melody's numbers were low."" Just to inform you why Mel's numbers may have been a little lower than usual, Melody's mother became very ill and melody moved her mother into her home and has been frequently in and out of the hospital with her. Her son also had gotten himself in a little trouble, which most teenagers go through, and Melody had to take a little time off for court. So she had missed a couple days due to family emergencies and in turn was fired. Although Melody had given Piccolo Hair Salon and Lisa Hutto, 9 loyal and dedicated years, she was easily disposed of because of her numbers. Let's forget the fact that an employee and someone who have actually referred to as a good friend, is going through hardships and needs her job more than ever now, lets just focus on ourselves, our numbers, and what we feel we are losing by looking out for our employees, or ""team members"" as Lisa often described us. I thought there was no ""I"" in team?? Her acts towards her employees and even clients are heartless, and there is no compassion for anyone. We are all just numbers and the clients are just dollar signs. If everyone in the world acted as she, the world would be such a better place. I hope you sense the sarcasm. One of the best things that ever happened to me was being fired by such a superficial petty employer. I am now employed full time as an accountant and am working in an environment where I am not judged or looked down upon for my looks, but praised for my work ethics. I hope with all my heart, Mel can find the same. more

First Ever Salon Disaster 4/5/2012

I have been having my hair colored for 15 years and my recent experience at Piccolo was a disaster and I will never return. I have gone to Piccolo in the past and always been pleased with Melody, Kendra, Dana. However, this time the owner dyed my hair and charged me double the posted price for reasons that just floored me. Lisa was very nice but in an obvious rush to get back on schedule for the day, so I should have left when my hair color discussion was rushed as she barely glanced at the pictures I had for her to get an idea of my color desire. I am very adventurous with my hair color and was going for a change that would darken my hair. I made it very clear I did NOT want it Black. It was black when she was done and she just told me it would wash out and not be so dark after a little while. Since she did not appear to have the time or desire to fix my concerns that my hair was black and not the dark brown I had requested- I just chalked it up to a ""lesson learned"" (Never let someone work on your hair who is in a serious RUSH), said thank you, and went to check out. At the check-out was when it really got bad. I had foregone a $53 haircut to save a little and just opted for the advertised $60 hair color. The total was $116! I was alarmed and asked how it could be so high when the only service I had done was an all-over color? I was told that extra product was required for my shoulder length fine/straight hair at an upcharge of $18, and that to blow-dry the hair was an additional charge of $38. Ironically, the blow-dry was at the suggestion of Lisa so she could try to convince me that my hair was just black when wet and not when dry. But it was black even when dry! I was very polite, I just paid the bill and left because I hate confontation and I really did not know what to say. I called back about an hour later and told her that I was taken aback by the multiple additional charges and that in the past, using Melody and Kendra, I had never incurred such charges. She simply said, ""Oh well- we are an ala carte salon."" I said OK, and let it go as I have realized in life that you can't reason with someone who just ripped you off and expect them to own up to it. I simply just want to let people know to be careful of the various upcharges. more

I paid her $200, and she called me petty 2/8/2011

The owner, Lisa Hutto, charged me $200.00 to color my hair/hide the greys and not only did the greys still show, she called me ""petty"". \r I called the same day they did my hair and let them know that the greys were still there. The next time I was available was 2 1/2 weeks later to have them redo it. She agreed to redo it at no charge and to give me a free haircut. When they called to confirm I again restated that the grey hadn't gone away and her response was that ""hair grows out"" and that was the reason I still had grey temples. I let her know that I had shown my hair to Kendra, a former employee (who is an outside friend and I see regularly) and she could confirm that it was still grey 3 days after it had been dyed. She then got very angry and said that either she was my stylist or Kendra was and Kendra was no longer employed there. I simply tried to let her know that Kendra could back up my story. She was very mean on the phone and would not listen at all to me. I opted not to return to the salon. She did refund me $60.00, however, it will cost more than that to have my hair redone. \r I have loved all of my experiences there when they had Kendra but now that she's gone I'll never ever go back. I would never recommend this salon again. more

Best Hair Salon in Charleston 9/28/2008

This is such an awesome salon. Two friends opened it together 25 years ago and they are still providing the best service you could want. It's an Aveda Concept salon too, so you get the head and neck massage!! Haircuts are about $50 but they are a non-tipping salon. They won't accept any tips, but they just ask you tell your friends about them. How awesome is that? They are so nice and they have the understanding amongst all of the stylist that the clients can switch up stylists or try a new person each time so they find the best stylist for them. And they give the best eyebrow waxes. :) GO! Pros: extremely skilled stylists, great prices, service more
