Philly Steak Depot Fun

Let us remember that Philly Steak Depot is the name of the place! Yes it implies 'Philly Steak' ala Philadelphia, however if one is expecting 'original Philly Steak' ala Philadelphia, then jump on an airplane. This little tiny store is a very good sandwich shop, owned and operated by Koreans with Mexican cooks and telephone operators, and Russian delivery staff. NONE of which speak English like a American. Sorry, that is the facts of the matter! One can get a very good meal for under $10. but should not expect ""The Ivy"" service. Their staff can indeed be challenging in the language area, but typically the food is good to eat! It is the only ""Philly Steak"" sandwich shop that also serves Korean food. And NO my dear they do not have 'cheeze whiz' an no sandwich shop in L.A. County sells 'cheeze wiz'. That is not even real cheese, hence the spelling! \r Cheez Whiz is a thick processed cheese sauce or spread sold by Kraft Foods. I have never seen it or heard about it in any food establishment, ever! If you want it on your sandwich, buy it at the supermarket and add it yourself to a perfectly fine 'cheap] sandwich! more

We have ordered delivery from this place multiple times and the food has always been great. I called when my friend from San Francisco was in town and UNFORTUNATELY the person answering the phone couldn't hear, take an order and had no clue what ""cheese whiz"" was....he had never heard of it. My friend is originally from Philly and it was just a big bust. It was really frustrating as he was the only one working and didn't speak english....we tried 3 times before giving up and realizing it wasn't worth it. Cons: communication more

i'm from denver and a friend and i too a vaction to LA; he took me to steak depot because it was his favorite place to eat when he lived in west hollywood; wasn't sure what to expect but in the one week that we were visiting, we ate at steak depot 3 times; the bread was excellent and the steak was delicious; i ordered the bbq hawaiian steak sandwhich each time because the pineapple was fresh and tasted really good with the bbq sauce; when we got back to denver we were both disappointed because there is nothing here that comes close to steak depot; highly recommended Pros: great food Cons: slow delivery more

Yes to most the neighborhood and general surroundings appear to be a little seedy at first glance , as well as the interior and not so clean atmosphere when you look into the kitchen. But hey it's not to bad once you actually get your order. The young people that were working were not 100% on there job but this isn't a 5 star cusiine , its a small cheese steak store in Hollywood.\r \r The steak was decent , to much onions for me and the cheese fries were defiintely with cheese wiz. Onion Rings were great though so all in all I would go back. I'm from the east coast, and since moving to LA a year + ago, I have not found a good sub shop anywhere. Nothing even remotely near what the east coast has to offer. And it's amazed me, why the skills to make a good sub are lost in a 3000 mile cross country trip. That was until I found Philly Steak Depot. I have tried several different sandwiches off the menu now, and while the steak is my favorite, their cold subs are also great. And for the price, in LA, you can't even come close to the great value and great taste. However, I suggest avoiding the cheese fries, unles you like canned cheese, and the cheese cake, because it is frozen, and even when it arrives in delivery it's still frozen at it's core. The steak is loaded with fat, there's no parking and the place is not clean and inviting. more

Given the size of the place, you'd be better off just taking your food to go (they only have 3 tables I think). However, aside from that small miscue, the their cheesesteaks are on another level. Really large portions and very good bread. Their menu make me salivate when I walk in given the many choices they offer (aside from cheesesteaks they have very large hamurgers and hotdogs too). $8 will easily fill up any ""larger"" individual such as myself (drink, fries and and a standard cheesesteak). Too bad I live on the other side of ""the hill"" now and I can't frequent this place that ofen anymore. more

We moved here from Philly and I've been craving a good cheese steak. Thier Philly was excellent. The bread was fresh and the steak was good quality. I'll definately be back. Pros: Fast service, Tasty steak more

We tried this place the other day after getting a menu in our building. It was actually really good. I think we'll be ordering more often. It's probably the best sandwich in this area. Pros: Food Quality, Price, Speedy delivery more

I'm from Boston, so I call the sandwiches Steak and Cheeses, but whatever you call them it's so hard to find a good one in LA. The Steak Depot comes through and makes a REAL, just like home, Steak and Cheese. Yummy. If I could change one thing about the sandwich, Id wish it to be meatier, but the flavor is great! Good bread too. I think the 6 inch was about $5. It's a little modern sub shop with a counter facing outside and a couple tables. It's very clean. Friendly staff.
