HUGE, I mean MASSIVE collection of pet 6/1/2012

HUGE, I mean MASSIVE collection of pet care goods and a good collection of birds, rodents, reptiles and fish. Knowledgeable staff that always helps me carry out my huge bag of cat food. This is the closest to a Petsmart, but actually owned by locals, that Portland has. Everyone comes here and I'm no exception. more

Is this love.... that I'm feelin'? 12/26/2010

Ok, I know some of the other reviewers have complained about customer service, and I really have to say I'm convinced they are just stuck up people who expect everyone in the store to stop and wait on them hand and foot. I've been in this store countless times and have NEVER gotten anything but exceptionally friendly people who know what they are talking about. About the only complaint I have with their customer service is the fact they treat everyone the same! I watched a poor employee have to deal with a lady who found it absolutely necessary to bring her entire flock of obnoxious wiener dogs. I think there were 5 of them, but it sounded like 500 with all the barking. She was treated with respect and catered to regardless of her misbehaving animals. They even let her set up camp in the store and helped with training! This place goes WELL beyond the normal standard of customer service... These people really care about your animals and you. They always have several employees in the store ready to help you whenever you need it. They extend that same friendly service over the phone, as well... Most places get annoyed by my ""price check"" calls... but this place seems to love them... And with good reason.....Everything is CHEAPER here... I've called around town to SEVERAL shops(including Petco and Petsmart) and the only place I found comparable to price is ""Western Pet Supply""... however that's twice as long of a trip for me than Pets on Broadway... so the 50 cents I'd save going there would be spent on gas... To have an independent store be cheaper than the big corp store... well that has to tell you something about greed doesn't it? I LOVE this store... They have a great selection for ALL of your pet needs other than livestock, AMAZING prices, staff that will accommodate even the most annoying customer and a genuine concern for your pets.... If you don't love this place there is something wrong with you! Only thing wrong with this store is sometimes it is PACKED with so many HAPPY customers it's hard to walk around the store without everyone stopping to say hi to my pup. Other than that... I wish they would just move next door to me because I have this bad case of separation anxiety starting to develop. I LOVE THIS PLACE! more

Could not believe how rude sales person was 6/5/2010

I went to find a certain brand of food for my dog. I have tried about 6 different kinds because he has allergies. The kind I ended up with at my local independent pet store was not the best quality food, but he was tolerating it better than the more expensive brands. ANYWAY, I went there to see if they had it. The didn't and when asked if she had any suggestions on alternatives, the girl told me she could find ""the second worst food"" there is for me. There's more but I don't feel like it is worth writing about. I have NEVER been treated like that at any store in Portland and will never return. Pros: selection Cons: rude employees more

The only pet store in my eyes. 12/23/2009

I love Pets on Broadway! I have never had anything but positive experiences here. I don't get the rude vibe that seems so common from other reviews. Bri in the fish room is an Aquatic Goddess and impresses me more and more each time I talk to her. I will only buy fish from her and no one else. When I saw a documentary on Axolotl's she found one for me and called to let me know, she also held it for me for 2 weeks while I was setting up it's tank. I now have 6 aquariums ranging in size from 30 to 60 gallons all with Bri's help, and everyone is healthy and super happy. Once again I LOVE THIS STORE. Pros: Fish, food selection, Bri Cons: I need to take two busses to get there more

A retraction 12/9/2009

Recently, I posted a rather negative review of Pets On Broadway, because of an experience I had with one of the store's employees. In retrospect, I think it?s probably a mistake to dismiss the store entirely, based on the behavior of one employee? no matter how befuddlingly rude he may have been. The truth is that I?ve visited Pets On Broadway several times in the past, and while I don?t recall much interaction with the staff there, I do remember some polite greetings and offers of assistance. I?ve always been impressed by their selection; they carry a variety of high quality foods, many of which you?d likely not find at one of the larger chain stores. In my prior review, I also commented on their high prices. Again, I feel that I was too harsh. After all, you?d have to expect that a smaller, locally owned store would have slightly higher prices than the chain stores. All in all, my experiences at Pets on Broadway have been positive, and I?d recommend it for its selection and convenient location. Pros: Great selection, convenient location Cons: One employee with an appalling attitude more

GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! 10/15/2009

We have a LARGE animal family, and Pets on Broadway has bent over backwards to help us make this store our one-stop-shopping place for all (well almost all) of our pets' needs. So instead of wasting gas and time driving all over town, we know we'll get a good deal and excellent customer service there. The managers (especially Kali!) have worked so hard to special order for us and educate us on the best foods and products for our several cats and one dog. They've done everything possible to earn and keep our business. (And seriously guys, you NEED to give Kali a raise!) ;) Pros: Competitive prices, personalized customer service, long hrs. Cons: Wish there was more than one store! (i.e. closer to us) more

Good Food- Good Store 10/8/2009

This is an awesome pet store with awesome employees!!- If you ask a question it will be answered. They have a decent selection of reptile, fish, bird and small animals & items- but this store does focus mostly on dogs and cats If you want a good quality food for your pet -come here. They don't sell low quality foods... I think science diet was the worst food on their shelves... and science diet is pretty much everywhere... just like fleas and ticks.. (bleck) They carry my ferret's food Evo! And they carry Oxbow small animal foods!! Awesome Pros: knowledgable staff & high quality products Cons: needs more space more

Pets on Broadway is a great independently owned store 12/29/2008

This is my favorite pet store in Portland. It's independently owned and I haven't been served by anyone there who didn't seem to like their job. The first time I went there was years ago to buy a finch and they referred me to their ""finch guy"" who was very helpful and really did seem to know everything there was about finches and care that they did well when I took them home. We've bought three finches, two parakeets and two hamsters there and all their food and stuff and we've never had less than great, friendly and knowledgeable service from their staff. They have a good selection of bird and mammal food - good organic seed and grain for sale in bulk. I also like their selection of bird and small mammal cages and toys and have bought lots of well-loved dog and cat toys there for friends. Most important, all the animals I've seen there looked good, alert and healthy. This is especially noticeable with birds and fish and their birds and fish look good, which is a sign to me of a good store. Pros: Good selection, high quality products, caring staff, animals always look healthy Cons: Once in awhile indifferent teen cashiers more

Bad customer service 12/29/2008

Sorry to say that I'm not impressed with their phone skills. I had every intention of going in to buy some supplies but answering simple questions seemed to be beyond the sales person's patience. more

@NewPea - 12/1/2008

Wow. Where to start? For one, how do you know who the managers are? Unless you're going there pretty often, you wouldn't know. Correct? Also have you ever thought that since it isn't a major chain like PetSmart, they can't buy in bulk to keep their prices super low? more

Very friendly staff. 11/15/2008

The employees will go out of their way to help you. Also it feels good to contribute to a small buisness. more

New York-style customer service 10/19/2008

I have to say that I often feel like I'm back in N.Y.C. when I shop here: the sales staff, by and large, are indifferent, at best, rude and petty at worst. On several occasions I have overheard salespeople gossiping about each other, or about the Manager -- and they seem oblivious to the fact that they might be overheard -- I feel like an interloper in their own little soap opera. Ugh! The only reason I shop here is for convenience. They are also way overpriced on everything other than pet food. And the parking can be difficult. more

Pretty darn good 8/24/2008

Pets on Broadway saved me. My poor cat was miserable with fleas on a weekend. Most of the flea products are only carried at vet's offices, but I called them on a Sunday and they had every product. I browsed the store and it had a decent selection of cat stuff. The layout is confusing though. The employees were not great about greeting customers or asking if anyone needed help. However, once I went up to the register, the lady I dealt with was very friendly and pleasant, she was also happy to give her opinion on the best flea product. I will visit again for flea products. Pros: they have Advantage, Frontline, etc, friendly cashier Cons: confusing store layout, you have to go get an employee, they don't come to you more

Fabulous Selection!! 7/10/2008

I have 2 chickens, a cat, and a new puppy. Pets on Broadway is the closest pet store, and it has the best selection of any pet store I've been to. It has feeders, waters, and feed for my chickens, tag engraving, litterboxes, scratching posts, and food bowls for my cat, plus more. They have everything I need for my puppy (a black lab mix). They have by far the largest selection of collars and leashes, it was hard picking one, so I got two! It has bike racks outside, and plenty of parking spaces, but it is hard to park, being off of Broadway. The customer service was above average, but not stellar. It took a bit longer than it should have in line, but it only takes five minutes to engrave tags, as compared to five days at Furever Pets. It is aslo nice that you can get food in bulk, which is very economical. In all, I know I can visit Pets On Broadway any time I need something for my pets! Pros: selection, bulk pet food, tag engraving, lots of fish. Cons: slow service. more

Mostly decent service, but good selection 6/29/2008

I do have to agree with WAnnonymous. There is one person who works there that I find to be a rather mean little guy, my guess is this is the person that the reviewer encountered. I did have a couple run-ins with one clerk: one where the clerk raised his voice at me when I couldn't hear what he was saying and had asked him to repeat himself, other times just a general feeling that I'm lucky he's even ringing me up. Next time, I'll just get his name and mention it to the main person I deal with as I'd hate the place to lose customers due to one bad egg. But the rest of the employees are very helpful and nice. The place is clean and they have a nice selection of products, I try to support the local business rather than going to the big box store to buy my stuff. Pros: clean place good stuff, mostly nice people Cons: one of their clerks is super not friendly or helpful more

in response to WAnonymous 6/17/2008

I have been researching the topic of pets and pet stores for awhile now for my job and just wanted to comment on WAnonymous's posting. Check this place out for yourself. I don't even live in OR and would rather see for myself the store and it's contents then read what is probably some grumpy woman who has nothing better to do sit around and bash a store that she calls herself ""dedicated"" to. These comments don't help especially when every other comment made is a positive one about the store and its customer service. Your comment just makes you look paranoid and uptight. I recommend visiting the store for yourself and seeing if it fits your needs and as for WAnonymous, it's a pet store that sells pet food and special bags for you to pick up your dog's ---- with, not a 5 star hotel where you pay to get waited on hand and foot. Get over it. more

Good products, good advice, always helpful 5/31/2008

I've shopped at Pets on Broadway for a very long time and am delighted with their products and their service. When I needed new housing and lights for a turtle the staff member was very patient in answering all of my many questions. I'm sure that if anybody ever has any problem Tom would want to know about it and would take the time to resolve the problem. more

Worst customer service EVER! 5/25/2008

I am one of the first customers of this store when it opened. I'm EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED in what has happened to the level of customer service. On my LAST visit, I could not believe the way I was treated. It was more important for several employees to watch me around corners and next to me pretending to clean, than help me when I asked. When I asked for help yet again, it seemed I had offended them. Finally, I gave up and inquired and ordered the item at the register, offered to pay for it, was told the actual arrival date, that I'd be called when it arrived and could pay for it then. HA! Not only was I not called, the item was put out for sale, sold and I had to select something else. Since when does this happen? more

Great Customer Service 3/22/2008

I have been a customer of Pets On Broadway for @ least 10 years. Not once the entire time I have been a customer this store, have I ever had bad customer service. There are times things get a bit hectic for the clerks at this establishment, but even under pressure the clerks have always been helpful and courteous. They are very knowleagable and have always been willing to answer any of my quesions. I keep coming back because I have access to superior products, as well as the peace mind I am getting the best information about my pets. more

You can't beat their quality of marine stock 2/23/2008

I've never had anything but stellar service and quality products from Pets on Broadway. Their saltwater tanks are by far the cleanest and most well kept in the Portland area. Their staff is knowledgeable and willing to take time to answer questions and provide helpful suggestions. Add to this the guarantee they have on saltwater fish, which is almost unheard of in the hobby, and you'd be hard pressed to find a better pet store anywhere in Portland. The onlything negative I could say is that they are too far from my house and the parking is atrocious Pros: Smart staff, good products, good selection, great prices Cons: parking and location more
