I READ ALL THE REVIEWS. I was eager to have some real fish and chips. Well on this Lenten Friday I stumbled upon the Mesa location. There were no parking spots left in the lot - the place was full as was the drive-thru line. I managed to park on the street and patiently waited in line, ordered (2 pc fish and chips) and then awaited the product. Much to my keen disappointment - it grossly UNDERwhelmed. The coating was crunchy but the fish - the thing we all want was nowhere near 'melt in your mouth' but rather very, very dried out. I cannot understand this as considering how busy they were these were not 2 pieces which had just been sitting for an hour under a heat lamp - though that is exactly what they tasted like. I had to use every drop of the reddish-orange almost salsa 'sauce' they serve it with (no tartar sauce here) to finish the 'main course.' The sole PLUS element were the quite tasty fries - hence the 2 stars though the fish alone deserves NONE. I have had FAR TASTIER fish at Captain D's or Long John Silver's. It was a major disappointment. more

You call this fish?? 7/31/2011

I ate at Pete's fish & chips in mesa, AZ yesterday, only because the internet query rated pete's as the best fish & chips in the Phoenix area. It was the most atrocious, disgusting, horrible fish & chips I had ever eaten. I expected a nice filet of cod or halibut, but instead I got this pressed square of something that was suppose to resemble fish. There was nothing good about it. The tartar sauce was a McDonalds impersonation of a tartar sauce. Mrs. Pauls would have been better. I should have known better when I pulled into the parking lot, and saw that they didn't have inside seating. If people in Phoenix think this is quality fish & chips, they should check into a 12-step program. GROSS!!! more

Quick, tasty and local 8/24/2008

Pete's is a great local fish and burger place that has been a long time favorite of my family. It's not going to be gourmet and they're going to give you Pete's Sauce, that's it. It's tasty and cheap and it's famous for being a pit stop-style hang out that has lasted in the valley for decades. The food is fast and the fries are always crisp. There's lots of outdoor seating that has misters in the summer and heaters in the winter. more

WHAT A RIPOFF!!! 8/27/2006

After waiting outside to order from the window... you get a WIMPY burger and the absolute WORST ""seafood"" (they should be sued for calling this seafood) I have EVER tasted in my life.\r This place is a joke and if you buy anything other than a drink you are going to get ripped off.\r \r Pete is no friend of mine. I want my money back, Pete \r \r Tom from Texas Pros: food was quickly prepared Cons: food tasted HORRIBLE more

Tasteless... 10/25/2002

Pete's batter is tasteless and bland. This is NOT good English style fish and chips... in fact, I'd call it downright yucky. more

Frozen Fish sticks anyone?? 10/18/2002

Nasty!! I got a couple squares of previously frozen fish and some pete's sauce. I had to pay for tartar sauce, they had no malt vinegar or lemon. How can a previous rating say that this is the closest to authentic fish and chips they can find? I feel that the fish and chips combo at Jack in the Box blows this ""Arizona Landmark"" out of the water. Sorry Pete! more

Beyond poor 9/24/2002

The fish tasted like it came out of a frozen food box. Not crispy, very greasy, and over all just plain disgusting. I don't understand why this place is still in business. more

No Comfort Here 9/13/2002

I expected a flaky white cod fish and thick chips. Not the case.....Pete's fish and chips is simply square fish patties out of your local grocer's freezer with no taste and the chips were nothing more than shoestring french fries. They didn't even have real tartar sauce. I was quite disappointed. more

They don't understand Tarter Sauce 8/2/2002

Terrible - not fish, but minced fish product breaded and fried in a salt brine. In addition, these folks don't understand the value of real tarter sauce or malt vinegar. The fries are decent enough, but the product passed as fish is not. Pros: central location, quick turnaround, inexpensive Cons: subpar product, too much salt, no tarter sauce more
