Great tea and great service! 3/9/2006

I am a big fan of The English Rose, an English restaurant and tea shop in San Carlos. The food is excellent -- it is less of a "tea experience" than other tea places and more of an English restaurant that happens to serve tea. I always get the "Tea Plate" which includes a tea sandwich, cake, pastries, a handmade scone (visit in November for their amazing pumpkin scones!), a crumpet, a cookie and some other things. Definitely good food and a good deal! more

Very english -- homestyle feel 12/7/2005

The English Rose serves traditional tea along with a good selection of entrees that would make a unique lunch outing with a good friend. The decor is very english, especially with the flowery wallpaper and the less formal table set-up. The atmosphere immediately gives you a relaxed, I have all the time in the world to relax, feeling. It does not have the "chic" feeling of Lisa's Tea Treasures - but as a working mom who already has enough "power lunches" on my schedule, I prefer the homey atmosphere at the English Rose. more

Great place for a ladies' tea (or hot chocolate, if you hate tea) 8/12/2005

I went here for a Mothers Day tea with a diverse group of friends, most of whom are from abroad or are married to foreigners. I think I was the sole person who loathes tea, but was willing to put that aside for the company. I didn't have to - I got hot chocolate served in a teapot alongside all the other ladies with their English teas and oolongs and whatever else. A lot of us had the tea plate to eat and some of my friends had things I can't remember (I think it was Bangers and Mash with a different, equally interesting name). No one seemed to have a bad meal. I liked their cheese and chutney sandwiches. They do private functions like bridal showers, in fact, they were clearing us out for one. I believe they sell the teapots and other items. I look forward to taking my daughter one day for tea (though I'll be having hot chocolate). more

English tea room 8/11/2005

Little finger sandwiches. Hand-knit tea cozies. Lovely little old ladies. If you're from England and you want a quick reminder of floral wallpaper, clotted cream and yummy scones, this is a good place. If you're looking for a glamourous place to impress the Bentley and Aston-Martin crowd, this isn't it. But the tea is superb, the ladies are kind and helpful, and lunches are very tasty. The English Rose is on Laurel Street -- a great pedestrian-friendly shopping street. After tea, wander down to the the ChefShop, where they have great selection of professional cooking ware. (At times, it beats Williams-Sonoma.) Or, over to Shelby's Garden -- full of darling gifts and stationery. more
