Caution 12/5/2011

I cannot continue to use this business to process my wild game into sausage. Previous batches of brats were fine. Recently 80 pounds of elk was ruined when over powering caraway was added. I called, but they didn't care. Recommend ShyAnn Meats and Sausage Company. more

Once Fine Institution That Has Really Really Slipped 3/31/2010

This used to be one of the best family run butcher shops in Portland. Unfortunately, with the advent of the counter being staffed by the family's kids and friends from school; this once fine shop has degenerated into a glorified day care center. You can't get a rib chop or a T-bone because mommy has removed the band saw so her precious little snots don't hurt themselves.(she told me herself) The sausages are still made in very large batches, yet they don't sell that fast, so you run the risk of buying week old cased meat.... yummy The place can have the air of a middle school playground. Ordering from the meat counter feels like telling the neighborhood kids to get off your lawn. I do not order from the sandwich counter unless it is staffed by one of the few remaining competent adults. Their in house deli meats and smoked fish are still exceptional and do not seem to suffer as much from the fact that they have driven away much of their business. Steak and chop selection is limited due to aforementioned band saw issue and are rather pricey given mediocre quality. Lest the reader think my vitriol is merely for my own satisfaction; I really do want to see this place return to what it once was. Pros: Deli Meats, Continual Sausage BBQ Cons: Snotty Service, High Prices, Questionable Quality Products more

If your near by you can't help but to stop 2/18/2009

So I work down the street from Otto's and let me tell you, it is really hard not too walk a few blocks in the cold, rain or snow to have one of their sausages with Jalepeno mustard. I have not tried their soups or sandwiches because then I would be even more addicted, but I have heard great things about their French Dip Sandwich. Otto's is a must for anyone in the portland area and I will always send my out of town guests there whether they are visiting me at work at the Joinery or not. Pros: yum yum Cons: Sometimes it is a little cold waiting for your sausage to cook, but it is the price you pay.... more

Great Sandwiches 8/5/2008

The sausages are good... but the soups and sandwiches are even better. And the beer selection... oh man!! Pros: Great Comfort Food more

Best and freshest local meats in Portland 12/19/2007

Gretchen and her crew are amazing - and always accommodating. Have opened early for me on a number of occasions and are helpful with selecting the choicest cuts. As a regular shopper, I recommend Otto's to all my friends. Pros: Great selection, great customer service, great street side grilled hot dogs! Cons: Parking can be difficult, no high-chairs for babies more

So so so so so yummy! 5/17/2007

I checked this place out after hearing about it in Gourmet Magazine and found it to be everything the article said and more. The best hot dogs I've found anywhere. The staff was so friendly. They cook one a grill outside the store. There is nothing better in the world of grill food. I will definitely be going back! Pros: Everything! Cons: Nothing! more

Great neighborhood butcher 10/11/2006

I live somewhat near Otto's and for about a year I've noticed it and been wanted to stop in, I'm very glad I finally did. Although I did not try their hot dogs - touted as in the top 10 hot dogs in the world I did pick up some goods from the butcher. It is very nice to have a good butcher nearby. We enjoyed the sliced turkey and roast beef; the pepperoni sticks were ok too. Nice shop, extremely helpful people working there. I look forward to it becoming a regular stop when Im shopping for groceries or special meals. more
