Best Sushi and Japanese Food! 1/6/2009

For everyone that loves sushi, I've discovered the best kept secret in Midtown last night! This restaurant is ideally located for patrons who have theater plans and the food is absolutely delicious! Omido is on Broadway, between 53rd and 54th Street, and boasts a very nice decor! For food and service worth way more than what you're paying, this is the place to go! more

Friday night, date night! 5/13/2008

My fiance said he have a great surprise for me on our anniversary. When the cab took us to Time Square, I bit my lips to keep myself from saying something bad.. well, he's not a native New Yorker and I thought maybe he doesn't really know what he's doing. We went to Omido for dinner. The place is small but the decor was beautiful! We sat at the Sushi Bar and had a tasting menu. I've dropped so many hints of wanting to go to Nobu or Megu.. but Omido is now on my top list for my favorite Sushi place! It's under-rated for the value it has to offer. Loved the kampachi, the botan, the temari was my favorite! The meal was well planned by the chef, who I later found out was the same chef from Yujin! My favorite place in the West Village! I realized the familiarity of the seaweed salad which was another dish on the top of my list. Chef Taka deserves more praise than what he's getting! Anyway, back to my date night.. so, I felt sorry I ever thought about my fiance not knowing what a romantic evening was all about, because a night at Omido was very romantic. Great atmosphere, good food, candle light.. then we walked around Time Square and went to a show. I realized, he wanted to give me the absolute New York experience.. because we are moving out of NY. And for the first time, I saw Time Square in a different light. It was beautiful. Pros: The food, decor, service, sake list Cons: Time Square.. tourist cluttered pavement.. hehe more

FANTASTIC!!!!!! 4/22/2008

There are so many great restaurants in NY...this has to be one of the best. We find ourselves consistently going back to this stylish Japanese Restaurant. Aside from the Jade Flower & Shiso Mojito cocktails we are big fans of fresh fish. You will not be disappointed. The sashimi is top notch and there are innovative creations hidden in the menu...my favorite is the salmon sashimi & citrus miso. There are also great non-sushi offerings like wasabi rock shrimp, braised short ribs, soft shell crab & duck are our favorites. Our only advice is to order many items as the dishes are small and as our waitress told us is the way the menu is designed. We live in the neighborhood and appreciate having this restaurant close by...it hasn't been over run by tourists. Stop by...maybe we will meet at the bar. Pros: Great food & drinks...feels like a downtown restaurant Cons: Starting to get busy more

Best Sleeper 3/28/2008

I went here 3 times within the first 2 months after it opened. Had a very good experience each time. Business seemed slow at the time. Haven't been back in a while. Great to hear it's drawing crowds. Will definitely be back soon. Pros: Great food, great desserts Cons: Drinks weren't perfect more

Amazing sushi to compliment the incredible decor! 3/27/2008

My boyfriend and I went to Omido last Saturday and by the end of the evening, we were chockfull of great food and delicious sake. We loved the wood-paneled walls, the large, central sushi bar, and the cozy, romantic ambience that one does not usually find in Times Square. The prices are almost as great as the fresh fish. Out waiter was so nice and accommodating. He even helped us decide on what to order and what sake would compliment it. Between the two of us, we had he "Big Omido" futomaki roll. It combined eel, tuna, avocado, tamago, and others into one giant inside-out roll. We also found the spicy tuna roll the best we'd had in recent memory. In the tempura rock shrimp appetizer, the shrimp were unusually juicy and flavorful inside their tempura casing, and the sauce was a sophisticatedly subtle wasabi aioli. Overall, Omido is a great place for sushi loves and newbies alike to dine on at a delicious, reasonably priced restaurant. Pros: Fresh fish, great atmosphere, great prices, awesome service more

Favorite Theater District Sushi 3/27/2008

My friend took me to Omido last Saturday night before a show, I have never been there before, but she highly recommended it. It was busy when we got there, but we seated in a reasonable amount of time. Our waiter was very helpful with recommending his top choice items from the menu. The sake was really good and there was a huge selection. The food was some of the best sushi I have had in a long time, I wasn't surprised when I found out that it was the same chef from Sushi Samba. Overall, the experience was enjoyable and I would recommend it to friends and family. My only complaint is the noise. It was a little hard to have a conversation at times. I'll go again on a less busy night, but would definitely go again. Pros: Food, Drink, Service Cons: Noise more

The worst dining experience 3/25/2008

Small space with cool decor. It looks like they focus so hard on the decor but everything else. The service is awful. My waiter is inexperience and bad. He couldn,t recommend us anything from the wine and sake lists. He confused our order. We had to ask to speak to the manager. She turned out to be rude and unaccommodating.Terrible attitude from the manager. In short, the poor service reviews here ring true. And I should have taken them seriously. The food is below average and overprice. I definately would not go back or recommend this restaurant. Pros: Decor Cons: Bad management more

treated like a king 3/25/2008

My wife and I had dinner at Omido a couple of nights ago. We were seated right away and the hostess, who we later discovered to be the manager, greeted us by name and as if she was expecting us. It was our first time here and the waiter was very helpful and suggested some wonderful dishes. I had the braised kobe short ribs and they were so tender they melted in my mouth. All the sushi and sashimi was beautifully presented, fresh and tasty. Their sake collection was concise, and we were easily able to find one we liked very much. We finished our evening with the mango parfait... you have to try this!!!!! All in all, the food was great, the staff seemed happy and friendly, we will definitely go back. Pros: fresh sushi, friendly and graceful staff Cons: music too low more

Worst service 3/16/2008

The only thing I like about this restaurant is the decor. The food is okay and overprice. The service is SLOW and terrible. My waiter was inexperience and has a poor wine knowledge. On top of all the manager was rude. It's a really dissapointing experience. For the price that I paid I would rather go to Nobu. This is not a restaurant that I would go back to. Pros: The decor Cons: Service, price and odd location more

avoid overpriced mediocre food and bad management and service 3/16/2008

My husband and I stayed at a hotel near by and the concierge recommended Omido. When we got there the employees ignored us for quiet some time and we did not get seated for a while although the restaurant was not busy at all, the place was most unorganized, the food was mediocre and overpriced we asked to speak to the manager because we could not get our waiter for 15 min and the woman rudely let us know that he'll be with us soon with no apology nor did she at the least ask us what is it that we wanted (it was our bill we were waiting for) and I can bravely write this review because we own 2 restaurants and go out to eat quiet a lot and never in a million years have I seen service like this or such a dysfunctional manager. Pros: decoration Cons: service/food more

Not recommended 3/13/2008

I do not have anything good to say about this place except that the decor is OK. The food is bellow average quality, and the service is terrible. They were rushing us through the meal. They had none of the drinks I wanted from the menu and the prices were very high. For that price level I would suggest going to Sushi Samba, Nobu, Tao or many of the authentic Japanese places this city has to offer Pros: Decor Cons: Service, Prices, bellow average quality of food more

Top sushi joint in the theatre district 3/4/2008

This midtown sushi joint definitely is the "spot". Located right next to Letterman's theatre, its perfect for entertaining corporate guests or the perfect date. We had the sushi/sashimi combo, and side order of the Temari roll (which was to die for). Everything was fresh, salmon was buttery and eel was tasty. The side salad, had a combo of 3 greens that was so fresh you swear they had a garden in the backyard. PRO: fish was superbly fresh CON: slow service, pricey Pros: cool design, fresh fish Cons: slow service more

Hidden Gem 12/4/2007

Omido is a gem hidden in plain sight. it is a highly unexpected venue for the area with exceptional quality and creativity. i was amazed the first two times i went there. the chef is a humble talent of great proportions. Me, my wife and friends always look forward to returning there. Pros: exempliary food and presentation, cozy and stylish decor Cons: odd location more

Awesome sushi in an unexpected location 12/1/2007

This has become our favorite neighborhood sushi place. Everything is very fresh and well-prepared. The sushi chefs offer creative dishes with an excellent presentation. If you sit at the bar, the chef will gladly offer suggestions and prepare interesting sushi pieces for you. And the hot appetizers are really very tasty. The wait staff is friendly and attentive, and the decor is sleek without being too trendy. A very welcome addition to an area teeming with ordinary restaurants. This one is definitely a cut above Pros: Very fresh sushi and excellent sushi chefs Cons: A little pricey more

What a gem in a sea of produced mediocrity 10/30/2007

What a gem! My wife and I were on our way to a show and walked by this new cozy little space in our neighborhood. We decided to try out a few dishes before curtain time. To our surprise it is owned by the original chef from Sushi Samba! He served us the Shimaaji, Madai and these little Japanese crabs whose name i can't remember. We were very impressed and look forward to returning for a full meal. We walked by again after the show and it was still open, we stopped in and took a take-out menu. We are so happy to have this relaxing restaurant in the neighborhood...someone in our building told us it was designed by Avroko. Pros: Relaxing, intimate, great quality fish, beautiful design Cons: Next to David Letterman show more

  • The Scene
Restaurants near Times Square that don't look like tourist traps can be harder to find than front-row theater tickets, so this sushi spot scores points for it smart, sleek design. The space looks like a swank spa lobby, with wood-slatted walls alight with candles, and the good vibes keep flowing in the semi-private back room--its ceiling is covered with omikuji, fortunes written on rice paper slips.

    The Food
Divided into cold and hot plates, plus a decent-sized list of sashimi and sushi, the menu offers few surprises. However, the photogenic presentations and generally consistent freshness make this an acceptable stop if you're already in the area. Warm, tender Japanese eggplant eats like dessert with a sweet miso sauce, and the Omido sashimi plate can barely hold the weight of its sea bounty, including briny mackerel and buttery amberjack. More complicated dishes, like a lobster roll overwhelmed by avocado, could use some massaging.

Hits: Among a sea of drab-looking Theater District restaurants, the sleek space sparkles.

    Misses:
Too many dishes don't achieve the flavor complexity their menu descriptions imply.
