The perfect place to let a friend cry on your shoulder... 3/1/2011

2/28/2011 The Old Monk: Dallas I stopped into this East Dallas tradtion completely by chance. A very good friend of mine was trying to medicate the pain of the loss of a very good freind, and invited me along for the ride. I have been here once or twice, as a bartender on the strip, who met other friends for a cold pint, and good food. The Old Monk is a fixture in East Dallas. The same way college students watch old Bruce Lee films and listen to Vietnam era protest songs while delving through the intricate nature of politics and medicine. This bar/grill should be listed as the number one spot for any traveler in need of a cold pint and good company. I recommend the ice cold Blue Moon, and possible shot of Tuaca with Red Bull. The staff are amazing here. And they make it a point to welcome, road weary travelers like myself with a laurel and a hearty handshake. -Review by Alex Gaddy more

Good beer, good food. 9/10/2010

Went here Wednesday night for the first time. The patio was definitely the place to be and filled up quickly. The beer is of course great but I was surprised by how good the food was. Definitely plan on going back soon! more

Great Happy Hour Place 2/21/2010

This is a great place overall for anybody going out for a happy hour or night out. I generally go for happy hour with coworkers. Our groups range anywhere from 4-30 people. These are the happy hours that are more like happy 5:00pm to midnight. The atmosphere is very laid back, and the music is generally good. They serve a wide variety of import beers or any mixed drinks. The food menu has variety, which mostly consist of bar food taken to the next level. I recommend the burgers. Pros: great beers, great burgers, attentive service staff Cons: hard to get a table when busy more

Best Beer Selection / Great Burgers 11/25/2007

This is the only place I think about when I'm in Dallas. They have the best beer selection that I've seen of any bar or restaurant in the city (mmmm...Chimay White on tap), and the food is hard to beat. Their ""Better Cheeseburger"" comes with a choice of several ""gourmet"" cheeses, including sage derby, stilton, chevrion, bruder basil, and whiskey cheddar (my favorite). Other tasty delights include the Guinness beef stew, crispy, belgian-style frites served with terragon mayo, and 5-6 different styles of oysters. I hear the bread pudding will make you cream your shorts, but I've never had it myself. Pros: Great Beer Selection, Tasty Burgers, Inviting Atmosphere Cons: Parking, lots of trendy people more

Good Drinks, Good People. This place is gold! 10/2/2007

Great drink selection, great crowd, great service. I have not tried the food, but all my peers say's it's great. What other place has hot port wine with cloves? Perfect for the chilly nights! This is one of the only bars that knows how to pour a Guiness correctly. You like beer, scotch, wine, mixed drinks? It's all here without breaking the bank. Pros: Variety!!! Cons: Parking can be difficult more

Great place for Happy Hour 9/19/2007

If you are looking for a chill place to drink a beer and catch up with friends this is the place you are looking for. They have so many beers to chose from and the fish and chips and french fries are sooo good (that is if you are not trying to diet). Beware of the parking though. It feels up fast and they do not have valet. Also, it can get crowded and hard to find a seat. Pros: Good fish and chips and beer selection Cons: crowd and parking more

Open a tab at this place at your own risk. 7/20/2007

I tried to close out my tab only to find out that my credit card had been given to somebody else, but the bartender said not to worry because this happens all the time. Not very reassuring... Pros: good food and good beer and scotch selection Cons: parking, and loss of customer credit cards more

Relaxing, professional and a lot of fun. 6/30/2007

This is truly a great bar. Laid-back and relaxing. Go after a day or week of work. Catch up with old friends. It can get crowded, but not too bad. Bar service is great, and if you're lucky to get a table, service is really fast. Pros: Location, Ambience Cons: Size more

Great neighborhood Pub 6/27/2007

This is a great Pub! Just like the neighborhood bars in Chicago, its small and full of locals. The food is very good as are the prices, and they have a large selection of Beers. My fav is the Fish and Chips and the Bread Pudding is the best. more

Just like the Pubs in London 10/12/2006

This place has the BEST selection of beers!! Their Smoked Salmon sandwhich on marble rye is delectable!!! My mouth is watering, just thinking about it!! Very relaxed atmosphere. I just wish it wasn't so smokey!! Pros: If you can think of a beer....they have it!! Cons: Very smokey at night more

It seems to get worse and worse 10/12/2006

When I first moved here from California I really like this bar cuz it was not stuffy and seemed to serve pretty good food but the more often I go there it seems like the service and food are getting worse and worse. Plus, I do think the drinks are a little over priced. I guess I will have to keep looking for relaxing place. more
