I was a customer of the original Roses on 23rd going back to the early '60s (I'm nearly 60 now). I was sad to see the Rose's close. Recently I was invited to have lunch at the ""New Rose's"" and looked forward to going. After taking my first bight, I knew it wasn't going to be the same. I was polite about it with my hosts, but my Rueben was a disaster. I really thought it was a bacon sandwich, it was so chuncky and crispy. Somebody tried to open a Rose's in Vancouver and that fell flat too. I really hope they succeed someplace, but it means they will have to work harder in every way to impress folks. I don't know when restaurant operators are going to get it. Cost to the customer means very little. It is always about value. I paid $21 for a Rueben at the World Famous Carnegie Deli in Manhatten and considering their overhead, that was the best quality/value sandwich I've gotten anywhere since I last ate at the original Roses'. Not sure I'd pay $21 for a sandwich in Portland, but considering the rate of inflation since the mid-sixties, maybe $21 is a deal for a quality piled high sandwich. If you're expecting the original Rose's quality/quantity and service don't go. If the new Rose's is just another deli on 23rd for you to try out, do so on it's own merits and forget about the mistique of the past...that which was Rose's. Tell me, who goes to a deli, especially a place in Portland on 23rd, called Roses, and orders chicken strips?
Pros: Can't think of anything. The desserts were just fair.
Cons: No Parking, low quality, corned beef tasted like burnt bacon.
