I joined the YMCA so that I could work out there since it was across the street from my office at the time. When I joined, it had just opened and had a "grand opening" special waiving 2/3 of the sign up fee (normally about $150?). I felt it was highly over priced. I ended up paying about $50 of the sign up fee and then another $56/month for a membership fee. I also wanted to take a spinning class and had to pay another $80 for the class. I thought that the facility was fantastic. They had plenty of cardio machines and weight machines. They also had free weights. The studio that my class was in was nice. The pool was great and they had an area for kids. They also had a day care. I'm rating it lower though because of the steep price. I've been a member at plenty of other places for much less.
