Food was terrible. Service was OK. had to go to an ATM to get money since they don't take debit cards. Refuse to go back when they tell you to go down the street and get money!...

good soups 12/30/2009

This place makes great soup, four different kinds a day. The fish sandwiches are pretty good. Great lunch deal. The place is not especially comfortable. Also, not kid friendly. The guy who appears to be the owner seems snobby, but I think he makes the soup, so oh well. Yes, they take cash only, get over it! Pros: excellent soup Cons: comfort, service more

LOVE the unique corn bread sandwiches 10/10/2008

I've been to No Fish! Go Fish! many times. The breakfast is hometown comfort food and delicious! The soups are awesome too, but my favorite choice here are the corn bread fish shaped sandwiches. They have a variety of fillings. I like all of them but the garlic parmesan and the cheddar are best. For the healthy set, they have many vegetarian and vegan options. It's not too expensive, and the servers are very friendly and helpful. Sometimes when they are crowded, the service is a little slow. The atmosphere is very indi-artsy-eclectic. Pros: Delicious food! Cons: too far from where I live (Beaverton) more

Completely disappointed 8/26/2007

Food was terrible. Service was OK. had to go to an ATM to get money since they don't take debit cards. Refuse to go back when they tell you to go down the street and get money! How ridiculous! Only good thing is that they serve beer during lunch hours. Pros: None really worth it Cons: No debit and credit cards! more

What is the hype about? 7/12/2007

Not happy at all with this place. I was completely disappointed and they forced me to go down the street to get cash. I should have read the other suggestions first as I was caught with no cash. Food was average and took quite a while to get my food. My girlfriend thought it was terrible food and she usually likes cool ideas like they did. more

Food was lousy and slow. Staff was friendly but experience was not great. No credit cards sucked and will never go there again. more

They need to work on a few things... 3/30/2007

Food was acceptable. Theme was nice with the fish looking sandwiches. But the service was poor having only one waitress and one cook. The big downer was that they do not take credit card or debit card. We would have had to walk down the street and take out money (For an ATM charge) to satisfy the bill. Nothing is posted on the door or the menu that we could see. Somewhat surprised they aren't open for dinner. But that is their choice. The food wasn't good enough to warrant a return. Cons: Not much good with this place beside the price was OK. more

Haven't been the the restaurant, but am a fan of the cart 3/3/2007

There is a cart across the street from pioneer place run by this restaurant. I am a huge fan of the cornmeal fish sandwiches, which are actually fish-less. Their soups are also good, especially the ""stuffing in a cup"" that they had around thanksgiving. I hope to visit the restaurant sometime! more

Somewhere between classy and tacky, much like the Montage 7/10/2006

garlic parmesean fish sandwich is dy-no-myte. Check out the velvet elvis painting in the bathroom and the astrological forcast in the hallway. Be sure to take in the decor as you enjoy your nicoise salad and your coctail. more

Soooo Goooood!!!!! 6/20/2006

I went on a warm lazy Wednesday night and found the service wonderful as well as the food and drinks. The decor is eclectic just like I like and the music was not invasive to good conversation. I really appreciated the curtains around the open door, they blocked the wind and traffic noise to the point I didn't even notice the noise until I left. I had the Mahi Mahi, it was fabulous!!! I also enjoyed two of their delicious Martinis... the Persephone, key ingredient pomegranate juice, just the right amount of tartness and the Mochatini just like drinking desert but not too sweet. I will certainly be back in the future. Pros: Great Service, Great Martinis, Good Food. Cons: Country wooden chairs don't fit in with the rest of the decor more

User review by bluesbread 5/21/2006

Cute decor, excellent service. But the food is underseasoned and unimaginative. Even their trademarked Soups of the Gods are nothing to write home about. Might be a good place for a drink, if you're into froufrou cocktails. Eat here only if you like American-style home cooking. Pros: wonderful service, interesting decor, fancy drinks Cons: unexciting food more

Go fish this place out 4/6/2006

No fish is the most excellent place. I lived off Hawthorne and since moving I have longed for my dinners, lunches, and brunch, Fantastic. The service is great, dont hesitate to ask for recomendations, the owners are quick to solve your dilemma(which may be too many fine choices). Pros: Value, Quality, Service more

Fantastic restaurant, odd name 10/15/2005

In my opinion, this is the best restuarant in its price range in Portland. The food is always exellent, what I would descibe as 'comfort food' with a great range of options for veggies and meat-eaters. The cocktails are offbeat and high quality (try the Fred Astaire); the wines are carefully chosen and inexpensive. Best of all is the relaxed atmosphere and the incredibly friendly and attentive service; it almost feels like dinner with the family, only without the arguments. I cannot understand why this place isn't constantly packed! Brunch, if that's your thing, is sublime, by the way... Pros: Atmosphere, Service, Value more

The best Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner spot ever! 7/20/2005

I loooove No Fish! The recently started serving booze-mimosas anyone?! The breakfast is superb-untouchable in this city. I also have come quite a few times for the lunch-super inexpensive, top notch service, and quality. The owners also like to hang out and chat with customers- I love those guys. So rare how nice it is to have service like that nowadays! I love the food and the atmosphere-I wish we could have a location closer to where we live now-I'd be in heaven! Pros: GREAT FOOD, Inexpensive, GREAT SERVICE more

fabulous! 5/4/2005

everything about this place is amazing! not a very big place, but it's super fun. be sure to check out all the quality art on the walls in the dining room (and the kitschy art on the walls in the restroom)... at least half the menu is vegetarian, and all of it is reasonably priced. the soups (again, mostly vegetarian) are outstanding, and the fishy sandwiches always make me happy. signature cocktails are inventive and delicious, and service is always impeccable. what more can I say? why don't more people know about this place? Pros: great veg options more

hawthorne branch 2/20/2003

reasonably prepared soups at excellent prices. a recent ""dal"" soup was made with brown lentils, though, which is only dal in the broadest sense. still, it was nicely seasoned, and could have been gutsier. the fish sandwiches are cute, but i'm sorry to say, bad. the griddled pastry is bland and doughy and the fillings indistinguishable, one from another.yet at these wonderful prices i will happily come back for a simple bowl of soup. you can tell the joint is real. Pros: prices, soup, realness Cons: dull sandwiches more

Nothing Fishy about it!! 2/19/2003

The Hawthorne location has become an island of relief from the sea of ordinary food on my way home from a busy day. The soups, served in gigantic, shallow bowls are simple yet complex and rich with varying textures and flavors. Try the Curried chicken in a coconut milk broth or the chewy mushroom barley or to-die-for-creamy potato leek. Each one does its own unique dance on the tongue! The cilantro/yogurt pasta was a pleasant surprise and I've been unable to re-create the delicate flavors at home. The No-Fish sandwiches are actually a cornmeal (?) batter that is poured into a fish-shaped form, then stuffed with your choice of fillings. I've found most of them to be a little on the bland side, although there are still many combinations I've yet to try. Give this place a try, and you'll be won over by the food - I promise! Pros: Not crowded, Open late, Good Service Cons: Long wait for food more
