Rude service, mediocre food 11/13/2011

My boyfriend and I were excited to try Nick's out tonight. Unfortunately, it was a HUGE disappointment. The waitress/bartender was extremely rude. The food was okay, the Coney Island tasted more like a chili dog then a real coney island dog. I can't say enough about how BAD the service was. I would never go back. more

New Owners, New Menu, New Cooks! 9/21/2010

Go in and meet the new owners Carrie & Casey! They are working to maintain the best of Nick's history and the coney recipe from the 1940's while updating menu items and recipes for the current customers! There is more than dogs and burgers too - homemade soup and pie. The current staff of cooks is very good! Thursday nights are now Karoake Nights, and there's a DJ with music on Friday nights, as well as all the sports channels. And.....Check out breakfast on Sat. and Sun. beginning at 9 a.m. I'll see you there! more

Wretched....! 8/23/2010

My sweetie loves coney island style hotdogs - Nick's are the absolute worst we've found in many years of searching and sampling around the U.S. We should have done an about-face when we walked in at lunch hour and found the place empty, but no, we stayed and regretted it. According to the waitress, ""the fries are terrific!"" No, they are actually undercooked, limp and greasy. Back to the dogs....tiny soggy buns covered with a spicy heap of greasy chopped hamburger - the dogs themselves just tasted bad - and undercooked. Want cheese with that? Well yes, it is a coney island dog. Look, I found some - unfortunately it was the plastic-wrap garbage that belongs in the waste.... Anyway, it's hard to figure out why our food was undercooked, unless, maybe they want to get our food out before we left!! AVOID at all costs. Also, how did the restrooms get so filthy if no one is there? more

Want to get sick? Then eat here!!! 4/11/2010

I live right off Hawthorne so I like to give every pub/eatery the local business. But I can NOT in fact promote Nick's to anyone. I have been there on two separate occasions and will never go back again! The first time I got sick off the tasteless connie dog (as which there named for). The second time I was there I was served completely raw chicken wings. I mean cold as the moment the ignorant cook took them out of the fridge. I am boycotting Nick's as I suggest any of you reading this should!!! Pros: Location Cons: Food more

Wow, really? How can food be this bad? 1/16/2010

Both my girlfriend and I threw up when we got home. I ordered nachos and she got the vegetarian coney dog. The salsa on the nachos had rotten tomatoes in it. I didn't notice before I had eaten 1/4 of them. The dog was way too salty. A picture fell off of the wall near us and the cook came out of the kitchen and looked at us like we were the ones to blame. It was a snotty ass look and when my girlfriend explained we had nothing to do with it, he commented ""I don't care!"". The waitress was very nice, but that was the only upside of this less than stellar hot dog stand. Pros: Service Cons: Food - freshness, cook's attitude more

Love Nicks 9/27/2009

Nicks is a fabulous throwback Coney joint. Clean, great atmosphere, staff and food. Tyler is a great host and has done a wonderful job! This is a favorite haunt! Pros: Owned by Republicans, Recalling Sam drive, food more

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! 4/11/2009

Okay what are you guys talking about here? SNACK SIZED DOUBLES??? Wow. Not my impression at all. Go right nextdoor to a highly popular local chain joint and get bubkiss for $8 and change. For those of you who think its a ""hot dog stand"" its not nor will it ever be. Its a full on restaurant that features CONEY ISLANDS. Thats THE ONLY creative hotdog they have or will ever serve. If you asked for a fancy dog other then the nick's famous orginial the old owner would of thrown you out of the place. The problem is I dont think people dont like nicks they just may not GET Nicks. YES its greasy, for gods sake who told you Nick's was healthfood?? If you dont like the remodel your nuts, I know from eating there for 20 years it needed a LOT of work. The new owner nailed it, updating it without losing the original charm.THANK GOD the didnt make it a hipster alternative joint and thus sell out to the ""new hawthorne."" Where else can you listen to Sinatra while stuffing you face. I mean you are complaining about parking ON HAWTHORNE??? You dont get the flavor of the area Pam. Sorry. Anyway I have been a critic of the revamp but almost a year into it the place is perfect, the food is great and the people have never been nicer. Good job. Pros: IMPROVED AND PRESERVED Cons: New customers who dont ""get it"" more

Sadly we were disappointed at best 4/5/2009

Have been in Oregon for about 5 years and keep hearing about Nick's, today we had some time to try it. The food was nothing special and somewhat greasy even. The atmosphere was ok, parking... what a nightmare! The only bright spot was the waitstaff was very attentive and polite. Too bad, maybe it's day has passed. Pros: Good wait staff Cons: Parking is awful! more

FRANKS BACK IN THE KITCHEN 3/28/2009

Frank Nudo is sneaking in & making the sauce. Coneys are gr8t. Better than ever. The sauce has the incredible kick. The staff is friendly and the owner stops at every table. There is only one Nicks...thank god it's preserved for future generations to enjoy and have gr8t gas! Pros: ITS NICKS more

aight 12/31/2008

i used to like this place. now the staff is 90% dudes and the owner is throwing ""impeach sam adams"" parties. lame. Pros: aight Cons: republican owned more

Come here order the FRIES! 12/8/2008

Check it, Nick's has the dopest fries in town. They are fantastic. Hot dogs are little but I guess that's ""Coney Island"" style, I've been their twice and each time I got different toppings on my dog which sucked cause the first time was real good and the second was not. So i suggest going later in the night when the big guy is cooking, he is super friendly and will come talk to you. That guy rules. Cute girls run the bar and waitstaff, they are cute but pour a light drink. Place has some good HD tv's for sports and stuff, I went down there to meet the Morning Sports Page guy's from 95.5 The Game. Pros: FRIES!, TV's, Promotional days Cons: inconsistant dishes, light drinks more

i love nick's 11/12/2008

Nick's coney island is just down the street from the bagdad. I stopped in before going to see a movie. I ordered a big burger with pepper jack cheese and it was awesome. The girl at the bar was really nice and helpful and everyone working there seemed like they loved their job. My boyfriend decided to down a few beers to avoid the high prices at the movie theatre. The bartender told me about cool stuff Nick's does at night, so i'll be back next time i'm going out on hawthorne. Pros: food and service Cons: you get really full more

Great Place! 10/15/2008

I had dinner at nicks earlier this week and was very pleased with my experience. The wait staff was very friendly and the food was great. I had a burger and it was exactly what it should be: a burger, cheese, and veggies. Nothing over the top, just a great burger. TV's over the bar provided a very relaxed atmosphere. A perfect hawthorne spot. I had never been into nicks before they changed ownership but my friend who I was with was amazed with how good the place looked. He couldn't believe how clean it was! I appreciate good service more than really good food and the staff was truly awesome. more

hooray for nick's famous coney island! 9/28/2008

I was really pleased with my overall experience at nick's. I got the single coney island and my friend got the clubhouse. the coney was awesome!- an all beef hot dog smothered with a chilli sauce, cheese and onion. The clubhouse had real turkey and ham made in house-not the stringy deli meat you find at other places. The staff was really friendly and helpful. the owner, ty even stopped by our booth to chat. he hooked us up with some alcoholic root beer floats that were so fun and delicious! i will definitely be back to nick's more

Just like NY 7/9/2008

Excellent Food!!! Pros: All around great more

Simply the best! 6/14/2004

If you haven't tried out Nick's you are missing one the true delights in Portland. My sister introduced me to Nick's over twenty years ago and even though I live over 100 miles away, I still frequent it as much as I can. The coney sauce is one of a kind and Frank's love of the Yankees, Blazers, and Neil Diamond give the place enormous charaacter. Forget about reading, just go. Go now and enjoy it for yourself. You won't regret it. Pros: Great food, Great atmosphere, Great history Cons: , Hours more

One Of The Best Spots In The City 8/12/2002

Nick's is simply money. Great Coney Island dogs, and wonderful atmosphere. It doesn't get much better than Nick's, and the price is great. Pros: Clean, Great Sports Photos, Super Food Cons: Only One Beer Served more
