Be careful! Deceptive practices! 7/15/2008

BE CAREFUL!!!!! These people engage in deceptive practices! They signed me up for a trial and said I could cancel within 30 days by giving them notice in writing. I went to them with a letter - they said it had to be mailed to them and they gave me a mailing address. I mailed the letter to them and it came back as "undeliverable". I went back to them to verify the address - they gave me the same one again. I sent the letter again - again they never accepted it. By then the 30 day period was over and they are now charging me $50 per month. THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE SUED!!!! more

nysc number 2 in the nation for complaints 6/27/2008

although as of 2008 they are now number 1 in the entire nation for complaints Heres the vidence How would you rate your gym? Consumer Reports has released their first ever review of health clubs in the US. In their findings, they show that the highest rated facilities are independent yoga/dance/Pilates studios, work gyms, and community centers. The highest rated national gym is Life Time Fitness. The bottom 3 on the list are Bally Total Fitness, Town Sports International (New York Sports Club), and LA Fitness. The ratings are based on attentiveness of staff, cleanliness, crowds, locker rooms, classes, value, and workout options. The Report focuses on only very large national chains, neglecting some of the smaller more ?specialty? clubs, including Crunch and Equinox. For a more New York-centric look at gyms, the New York Post has pointed out that the worst offender in terms of complaints is actually Crunch, followed by NYSC, and then New York Bally Total Fitness locations. Good if you go for it 7/26/2006

I've never been much of a gym-goer, preferring to run outside, but recently I've accepted that I won't be able to run on these knees forever and that also I need to strength train in addition to cardio. So... joined a gym. After shopping around, NYSC was the best deal -- I signed up my final semester of college and so got a marginal student discount (saves $10 or so every month). The option of being able to use sister facilities in other cities (I'm in Boston regularly) was another plus. The drawback is that there are no NYSCs way uptown -- I have to hop on the subway for 20 minutes to reach the nearest one. And during rush hour they are filled wall to wall. But I've started going later, around 8pm, and usually have the place to myself, which is nice. Facilities are always clean, there are many machines to choose from, there are lots of classes available (I have yet to try those) and there are personal trainers for hire. All in all, compared to my limited experience with other gyms, the NYSC seems a fair deal (it's expensive, of course, but all gyms in the city are grossly overpriced) -- you get out of it what you put into it. more

NYSC 4/8/2006

New York Sports Club is a good gym to join. They have state of the art equipments and nutritionists/trainers that really know their stuff. They're also very motivating. It's a great place to go if you want to get fit but be a part of the community as well. I've been going here for two years now, and I feel much healthier. more

Exercise with Social Events 9/22/2005

If you are looking to get back in shape and want to expand your network of friends, this is a popular health club to check out, with a number of locations all over the city as well as in boston and philadelphia - if you also travel there and want to keep to your exercise schedule. The classes are often pretty full, but they are fun and will get you working up a sweat. They also can set you up with a personal trainer to get you on the fast track for results. Check out the big list of corporate discounts too, if you work for a larger company more

Healthy 8/16/2005

not a bad gym, but it seems like its more of a social outpost than a gym. The classes are ok and the machines are good. Its not as nice as an equinox, but then again monthly membership fees are less than equinox. Overall its a solid place to go and work out and socialize. more
