This is a drop in class that's been around since the early or mid nineties and deserves more attention. Anyone who's been to Kripalu MUST check this out! It's just a beautiful experience.
There is a communal vibe here that doesn't exist at even the least commercial of yoga studios. To me, that means allowance, acceptance, laughter, gentleness and a complete lack of judgment. We ease into the practice gently and give permission to be with ourselves and one another. We have fun, go deep, wherever our spirit takes us. What's most important is that it's all done with care and acknowledgment of us as individuals.
NY Kripalu has a different teacher each Friday night. All have been trained at Kripalu up in the Berkshires. One of the regular students was recently certified and is already a phenomenal teacher.
At $15, it's a bargain especially when you consider it's run by volunteers and the space at Essential (great massage place, nice people) is rented per session. The class used to be 2 hours. Now it's 90 minutes, which actually works out better for me on Friday nights after a tough week.
An added bonus is that after class the regulars usually go out for a nice, relaxed and cheap communal dinner -- usually it's vegetarian Indian in Curry Hill.
Pros: Best way to segue into the weekend
Cons: Tight when it's crowded
