Great restaurant!! 6/24/2009

Great restaurant!! ?The atmosphere is pretty with maps and pictures on the wall. ?There's a little bar that's looks charming with the glass lamps. ?It's usually pretty quite there though, so actually, the bar is a little unnecessary. ?However, if you want a fairly quiet comfortable place to enjoy a meal, than this place is great. ?The food is great too - good sized portions for fairly inexpensive prices! ?Ethiopian food is fun to have on a date. ?Since you'll be handling your food, it's a great ice-breaker! ?Lastly, they also have a a pretty good variety of drinks for a small restaurant - wines from different regions like Chile or Africa, bottled beers, sweet wines, steamed milk, and ethiopian coffee!! more

Amazing food, good service 12/15/2006

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the whole Bay Area. The dishes are rich and flavorful and perfect with steamed milk or honey wine. Service is friendly and atmosphere is laid-back and great for groups. Pros: tasty food Cons: parking more

Very nice small neighborhood restaurant. 9/18/2006

My wife was in UCSF Hospital for serious surgery. I was staying in the area and was looking for a place for dinner. Total stubbled into the New Eritrea and knew nothing of the fare. Best dinner I had for many a day with the most pleasant and prompt service I have had in a long time. I would recommend it to everyone. Pros: Excellent service, excellent food more

The BEST!!! 2/14/2006

This is the BEST place for Eritrean/Ethiopian food. We go here almost every week. The food is spicy, savory and addictive. I've eaten almost everything on the menus and LOVED it!! Pros: Delicious, Healthy, Inexpensive more

I've had better... 12/16/2004

I was excited to find New Eritrea not to far from our new home, but I was disappointed in the food. I've had worse, but I've also enjoyed far, far better. Nonetheless, the food was a reasonable value and it was easy to get in, even on a weekend night. Pros: Easy to get a seat, Decent value, Not noisy Cons: , Ho-hum atmosphere more

New Eritrea serves up the good stuff! 4/24/2003

Just off the beaten path in the Inner Sunset neighboorhood that centers around 9th and Irving, New Eritrea will almost always have a table open for you. The family-style serving brings you closer to whomever you're dinig with, from huge banquets to intimate evenings for two. Portions are huge, worth the price (almost all under $10), and the sambusas are to die for! Nice selection of African beers and authentic cuisine, cooked and served by the owners, and a funky San Francisco-African decor. Wash your hands and enjoy! Pros: Tasty + Filling, Great Value, Eat with yer hands! more

Good food and a pleasant atmosphere. 3/30/2003

While I've only eaten at New Eritrea three or four times, I've always been pleased by the experience. The restaurant itself has a pleasant atmosphere, and the service is always good. While pleasantly busy during peak hours, the place is never packed and one can always get a table. The waitstaff is particularly friendly and always available. Also, for those that are interested, there is a full bar. The food is simply yet pleasing. If your not familiar cuisine, you might be surprised to eat food with your hands with huge spongey pancakes. However, the experience is actually quite fun. Probably a good place to take a first date to see how they respond to such things. Anyway, as I say, the food is consistently good - if not outstanding. I've run out of room...couldn't finish review. Pros: Food, Service, Value Cons: Limited menu more

a find.... 6/27/2002

I went to New Eritrea without any expectations for Eritrean food. The food was excellent and very unique even for a City as diverse as San Francisco. The service likewise was very prompt and courteous. If you like ethnic cuisine, you must try this one out. New Eritrea is a true find and I couldn't recommend it more highly. more
