Best Indian in Vancouver 3/12/2011

First, I'll just say that if you want Indian food in the ""Couve"", you've got to give something some slack, and here, it's the interior of the restaurant. Decor is not good, to say the least, but I'd rather they stay open than redecorate. We've been coming here about once a month for the last two-three years. We usually get our food to go, because we always seem to be getting food from here on a ""curl up at home and watch movies"" night. That being said, that should tell you something about the food. Good, comforting (not swanky or expensive) Indian food. Fair prices, good portions, owner is always very nice and makes good suggestions for us to try new things, and you really can't ask for much else. Granted, we could eat there at the buffet cheaper, but I prefer their yummy food in my own, comfortable digs. Try the Chicken Mahkani (and get Tamarind sauce on the side). Really good, and a nice change from Chinese takeout. more

""Indian Style"" means GREAT FOOD!!! 9/1/2010

My husband & I have been coming here for several years now & it continues to be our FAVORITE restaurant of all time. Authentic recipes, prepared in traditional mannerisms, by an Indian family in a loving family atmosphere is what you are guaranteed. The buffet is such a deal and a great way to get a taste of many types of Indian foods if you?re not familiar with the menu, but we order the dinner deals. You get 3 side dishes, specialty nan bread, basmati rice, and a dessert with your entr?e for only a few dollars more than just the entr?e (which is a comparable price to other Indian food restaurants.) What?s NOT comparable is the taste and the service! They remember our orders to a tee, but always check with us about what we want first and my husband is a connoisseur of HOT foods and this Indian food is the ONLY place that has been able to satisfy his taste for Indian food made ?Indian Style.? Order yours ?Indian Style? if you want yours extra hot. more

Great Food -- good times 3/30/2010

Great place to eat, we have a young child and the owners children play with her and give us a chance for adult conversation. Not to mention they call us when they make some of our favorites! Samosa, pakora, and nice deserts, it's a great value, especially if you are hungry. more

I really wanted to hate this place....but..... 2/3/2010

cons.... In my opinion there is too much light....there is about 3X the number of lights needed for the room. This coupled with a light yellow paint and light floor color makes me feel as if I need to squint. They have not completely updated the decor from the previous restaurant. The overall feel is that you are still in a rustic American food restaurant with 1880 vintage logging train murals and rough sawed wood booths. I detest.....and I mean DETEST buffets. When we were seated and found the dinner service was a buffet I wanted to go but because we were already there opted to give it a shot. Pros: The food was all better than we expected. My wife and I tried a large range of items and found them all to be really very decent if not very good. We have had better Indian food, and it is not by any stretch a quiet candle lit romantic date place but if you are looking for a place to get a variety items and can handle the fact that its a self serve buffet you will likely be very happy with this place. This place is not perfect, so what....with all that is right clearly outweighs my minor bitches. We will be back. Pros: better than expected food and large assortment Cons: read below.... more

We went with a group from our church to this restaurant, the service was good, the wait staff friendly, the food was a little too spicy for my tastebuds. more

Good Food, Great Value 7/20/2009

Namaste may not have the absolute greatest Indian food you will ever eat, but the food is very good. and the buffet is an outstanding value. It's a great way to sample a variety of dishes, and maybe even introduce indian food to thosse who haven't tried it before. The sauces are great, nan bread is fresh, all round the food is very good. Highly recommend finishing with the Mango Ice Cream - wow! Excellent! This is a family run restaurant, very friendly nice people. Their children are usually hanging about, lending an even more casual, family-like atmosphere to the place. They go out of their way to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. May not be the place to go for a romantic get away, but if you simply want to enjoy some very good Indian food in Vancouver at a great price, you can't go wrong with Namaste! Pros: Great value, good food, relaxed environment Cons: Basic decor, location not the greatest more

Fresh & Delicious Indian Food 7/2/2009

Chand, the owner/cook, has scored perfect on EVERY visit from the Department of Health! The buffet is served for lunch and Friday and Saturday dinner. An excellant opportunity to try different Indian dishes. Charan will guide you through the menu at other times. Bring your appetit. The food is a wonderful experience and the price is right. Pros: Good Food for Everyone Cons: Except Vegans more

It's All About the Food. Obviously Better Than It Was in the past 8/12/2008

Yummy food. The lunch buffet often has a tasty surprise, it is not the ""same old"" indian buffet. The evening cooked to order dinners are well worth the slightly extra cost, and so are their appetizers. My wife and I have eaten at probably a hundred indian restaurants around the country and this is one of the best (in terms of the food). Moreover, we have been here a dozen times (over the past year) and never been disappointed. Past reviews suggest that this is a distinct improvement from previous times. Pros: Buffet has huge assortment, mostly excellent. Great value. Easy parking. Cons: Ambience similar to a diner. more

Some of the best food in the area 3/29/2007

After my workplace moved to Vancouver last year, I have visited this restaurant many times for lunch, as it has become one of my favorite Vancouver restaurants. Their lunch buffet offers many tasty items, and the food always tastes great, with a good blend of spices. They have a fairly large rice warmer that they always keep full with fragrant and flavorful authentic Basmati rice, and they occasionally switch some of their buffet items. Their sauces taste great. I enjoy their mild dishes as well as the spicier dishes such as the garlic chicken. They also have a dish with chicken in yogurt sauce with spices, which is also great. In addition, they have a salad bar. Pros: Excellent food, great buffet selection, friendly service Cons: It's a little bit on the expensive side more

Great Indian dinners 10/9/2006

The first time I ever tried their food was dinner...fabulous! I was, however, very disappointed in their buffet. Please don't judge them by the buffet! If you order food cooked to order, it is marvelous. It is definitely not a romantic venus, with diner style booths, and a TV on in the background tuned to the Indian station, and the owners' child hanging out watching it...but very VERY good food. I cook Indian cuisine, and I aspire to Namaste's sauces! more

Best in a looooong time 2/19/2006

My wife and I have eaten Indian food from Singapore to HK to London to S. Cal and this was some of the best. Friendly attentive staff, chef shared receipts, owner gave us extra carrot salad and the best mint chutney ever. We went 2 days in a row, and took home 4 to go boxes in our cooler for trip back to Califonia. Very tasty and fresh, I would go back if I was ever to visit Vancouver or Portland again. Do yourself a favor and try it. I expected little and got lots. The negative reviews must like to eat at Denny's because this was worth the trip and that was only lunch at 6.95 Pros: Tasty, friendly, great selection Cons: too much to eat, over stuffed, I live in Cal. more

Real bad experience...better to avoid 7/30/2005

We went to lunch buffet, lentil sambar was converted to lentil soup. There were not many good items in the buffet and the food tasted like it was old, not fresh at all. Also, the service was very unprofessional. If you really want to taste Indian food please try somewhere else. Cons: bad service more

Exotic ethnic food in Vancouver, WA 1/5/2005

One of my favorite places. Food is a good value if you hit the buffet M-Sat for lunch. Look for a coupon in the local paper or ad flyers. You will almost feel guilty for using a coupon here. Food is exotic, well prepared, and the atmosphere is warm. My new favorite is the Nan bread, the fried vegetables (indian french fries?), the tandoori chicken and its curry partner. Try the tamarind with the Nan bread (must have!). I have never come here for dinner, its expensive, so hit it on a Saturday for lunch and be pleased. Pros: great food, excellent value, try something new Cons: , service OK for buffet, spicy means HOT more

Authentic Indian 10/14/2004

Having lived in England, and eaten at a gazillion Indian restaurants, I can say, with no reservations, that Namaste is as authentic as I've found in the States. The lunch buffet is tremendous, service is excellent, price is right. The makhani isn't like the red, tomatoey tripe usually served, the samosas are heavenly, it's all just plain fab. If you're in Vancouver, make it a habit; if you're in Portland, take a drive. You won't be disappointed! Pros: Inexpensive, Good Parking, Terrific Food more

Disappointed Diner 5/8/2004

Food is mediocre, but service is very unprofessional. I ordered Tandoori shrimp which arrived very dry and inedible. I sent it back and ordered tandoori chicken instead. The bill came and I was charged for both. I mentioned it to the waitress. She left and did not come back for 10 minutes. I went up to the desk and they took the less expensive chicken dish off my bill but I was told the owner said I had to pay for the inedible shrimp entree. I asked to speak to the owner. He told me tandoori seafood is always dry, and then finally agreed to charge me for the chicken instead. He was very rude, and I will not be back. more
