  • The men of the Fur Trade, or Mountain Men, were among the greatest overland explorers that the world had ever known; and within eight years they knew the entire topography of the West. Intrepid and hardy, living for years by their wits, applying skills learned by bitter experience, these men opened the western reaches of our country to later generations of settlers. Enduring hardships inconceivable to modern, jet-propelled men, the Mountain Men forged the first enduring link between the East and the fabulous West. The environment in which the fur trade started was a virgin wilderness known only to God and the American Indian. Within a period of twenty-five years it was changed forever. The center of operation of the trapping was within the identure or basin of the headwaters of the Green River under the western ramparts of the Wind River Range in what is now Sublette County, Wyoming. Here were held all but a few of the historic Rendezvous of the Fur Trade where Indians and whites gathered annually from the entire West. The purpose of the Museum of the Mountain Man is to interpret this important era of history, to the thousands who pass this way on their western vacations. We present displays with art, dioramas, wildlife displays, and a Research Library of the era.
