nothing special 3/3/2008

Recently went there on a busy Sunday evening for dinner with a friend, and I left somewhat annoyed an definitely unimpressed. The wait staff were always pleasant from the beginning, but then with the rush ignored my friend and I for upwards of an hour while we sat low on water, and no one bothering to ask if I'd like another glass of wine, and it that long for us to receive our meal. \r \r The red sonja, ""signature appetizer,"" was a bland red lentil paste served on a lettuce leaf. It had little to no flavor. Another thing about it is that it's served by what appears to be the chef ""squishing"" it between his/her fingers to leave a stylized finger imprint. I guess for some this wouldn't bother them, but I found it to be unappetizing. \r \r After waiting nearly an hour, during which time the waiter swung by occasionally never bothering to apologize for the delay, refill water or, as mentioned, ask about my empty wine glass, our food arrived; others who had arrived after us received there orders before us. This is always so annoying, especially when it's not acknowledged. \r \r The rest of the meal was bland with very little flavor. It wasn't bad, but it was uninteresting. We ordered: a cretan salad, empanada, and a pasta dish. I think the problem is that the menu makes everything sound far more dynamic and flavorful than the food is actually, which is disappointing. \r \r I give the restaurant two stars simply because the staff ,while seemingly inexperienced in attending to customers on a busy night (in my opinion the waiter should have apologized forthwith and offered me a glass of wine on the house to make up for the delay), were still very nice. The best I can say about the food was that it tasted ""clean."" Pros: ambience Cons: unappealing food, long delay more

Great Astoria Find! 11/5/2007

Definitely one of the best restaurants in Astoria! Very cozy and intimate setting, with a comfy banquette. This is not your typical Euro lounge you usually find in Astoria. The staff is super friendly and truly want you to enjoy the experience. Their signature dish the red sonja is a must try. My friend ordered the special of grilled shrimp skewers and I tried the seafood paella, the flavor of both were outstanding. Pros: Friendly staff, Amazing flavors. Cons: Small, so on a busy night I could see a problem with seating. more

Cozy place, but avoid the ""crab"" burger! 10/1/2007

That is right -- the ""crab"" burger was made with slices of FAKE CRAB STICKS! \r \r Other dishes are mediocre, but I do remember the dumplings with butter sauce were quite good. Pros: Cute place, innovative menu. Cons: Fake crab meat. I mean, really, people. more

Excellent food and Service! 6/26/2007

I usually don't do reviews, I just read them. However, after going to this restuarant twice I have to say the food is excellent. The food is very tastful. This restuarant is called Mundo which means ""world"" in spanish because each dish served at this restuarant is from different parts of the world. The food selections are very diverse. The food served is very light and the menu has a number of healthy choice foods. The service is great. The waiters are attentive and explain in detail any dish ordered. My favorite dish is the Red Sonja. If you go there you must try this dish. The desserts are excellent also. I highly recommend this restuarant and the prices are affordable. I travel from manhattan into Queens just for this restuarant. I can't wait to go back again!!! Pros: Excellent food and nice atmosphere Cons: Small inside more

Best International food and beer in Astoria! 3/26/2007

Mundo was a very satisfying experience. I walked in Mundo with my friend for dinner for the first time tonight. They greeted us right away. When our waiter came to the table I asked if the Belgium beer, Blue Moon was good. The waiter said it was good and also recommends a Brazilian dark beer, Xingu which I tried later that night. The choices were wonderful. I highly recommend these two beers. For an appetizer I went with the recommendation of the red Sonja, 4 red lentil patties. I could have stopped there; my taste buds were in heaven. I order the crabmeat burger, which was good, but I?m sure I would?ve found something better on the menu for my next visit. I finished my meal with tiramisu, which was also divine. For a great international dinner try Mundo. Pros: Wonderful Customer Service more

Wonderful! 6/28/2006

I just ate at Mundo for the first time yesterday, and I have to say it was fantastic. The space is small but cozy, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. There was some great music playing, which kind of made me feel like I was on vacation some place far away from Astoria. There are a lot of really great vegetarian options, as well as several authentic Turkish dishes. If you're still wasting time reading this review, stop now!, and head straight for Mundo! Your stomach could already be filled with tons of deliciousness! Pros: Everything! more

Great food and great service 6/24/2006

After a long time searching for a place to eat on a Saturday night with my girlfriend, we decided to go to Mundo. The place is tiny and quaint, but very cozy with the soft candlelight and jazzy artwork adorning the walls. \r \r Our waiter was very informative and recommended a few items on the menu, which is seasonal. It was a warm summer evening which made the glasses of Sangria, abundant with slices of fruit, even more enjoyable. We had a crab and roasted red pepper dip along with a beef empinada for our appetizers, which set the tone of delicious worldly cuisine that we were about to experience. For our entrees, my girlfriend had the crabmeat burger with oregano seasoned french fries and I had tiny beef dumplings in a mildly spicy yogurt sauce topped with mint. Both items were absolutely delicious and not too filling, which allowed us to save room for dessert. We shared the pasha mundo, which rolls of cheese and almonds in a white creme sauce. Phenomenal!\r \r Overall, Mundo was excellant from the service tight down to the food. The prices weren't too exhorbinant and it is an establishment that we would visit on a fairly regular basis. Pros: Great seasonal worldly cuisine Cons: Tiny with limited seating more

Great Find 3/30/2006

This place is hidden just off Broadway but not to be missed! I went with my girfriends on a Thursday night and it was great. There is something very calming about the restaurant and you feel it as soon as you walk in. The service was great and not once did we feel rushed, but at the same time not ignored. The waiter was friendly and made suggetsions on the menu. Although the menu is not that extensive, weverything we ordered was really tasty. I would highly recommend this place to anyone, its great to find different places in my neighborhood and take a break from the tried and tested. Pros: service, ambiance Cons: small menu more
