One of the worst examples of service ever 2/17/2007

We tried Mulchrones based on it being on the Open Table network - sounded like one of the few places on the south side to get upscale food like oysters & aged prime steaks. I will say that the free valet parking is a nice suprise. It was all downhill at breakneck speed from there. The host area is squeezed in front of the restrooms with no place to get out of the way, putting arriving guests directly in front of the mens' room door - awkward for them AND the poor guy trying to get in or out of the facilties. We were waiting behind a couple frustrated that no host was there - the woman finally took a seat on the stairs to the diningroom, as there is no seating. Nothing much to look at either, except the mess at the host stand and the snapshots of various babies scotchtaped to the wall. About 10 minutes passed and we were seated by a hostess who explained that she had been absent because of having to help out in the busy diningroom. We should have taken this foreshadowing as a clue, but no - we sat down in a booth that sunk down so low our tabletop was almost at neck level - and we're tall. The water glass was chipped and filthy. We were served water, but it was 10 minutes before we got bread. No server ever approached for a drink order, or even to say ""I'll be right with you"". We are patient diners. The room was fairly busy. We continued to wait. It was never clear exactly whose table we were - from time to time we'd see flustered girls go by neighboring tables, all of whose occupants seemed to be craning their necks looking for a server. We continued to wait. The water was running out, and nowhere in sight was any sort of management, or even the hostess. After being seated a full 20 minutes without any attention we finally decided to cut our losses and go elsewhere. Too bad - we were prepared to buy a nice dinner with wine, and had hoped to find a neighborhood place to reccommend. We ended up downtown at Phil Stephani's 437 Rush and had a great meal. Pros: free valet parking Cons: everything else more
