Superb on All Counts 9/10/2012

My wife and I stayed at this precious inn last week for six nights. The accommodations are superb. The king-sized bed is amazingly comfortable. The ambiance is a nice mix of Craftsman style, baseball memorabilia, and Zen. This is a great combination for Easterners, one artist and one baseball fan, who live in a Craftsman style bungalow with lots of Buddhas. The efficient kitchen allowed an occasional break from restaurant fare. The proprietors, Linda and Mike, are friendly and most helpful. Their enthusiasm for San Diego is contagious. They live on sight and are readily available. The location is walking distance from terrific restaurants. The private parking was definitely an asset. We were easy driving distance for everything we wanted to see including the Zoo, Coronado Island, La Jolla, Torrey Pines and more. Mudville Flats is a short drive to the airport, an added convenience. I had high expectations given the reviews I read. Even those expectations were exceeded. more

We stayed at the Mudville Flats for 8 nights over New Years Eve 2011 9/10/2012

We stayed at the Mudville Flats for 8 nights over New Years Eve 2011. We arrived early on our check-in date and so we took the time we had to check the nearest surroundings. Only a few blocks away you´ll find the famous Gaslamp Quarter, a historic district where you can shop and in our case have breakfast. The flats itself offer a unique experience. They are really cozy and you see the efforts Linda and Mike put into their apartments in every detail. The rooms are clean, the bed is great and the kitchen with all its appliances gives you a great chance to keep your vacation reasonably priced (a supermarket is in walking distance) :). If you need anything during your stay, Linda and Mike help you out wherever they can. We had a perfect time in San Diego and would recommend the Mudville Flats for a great San Diego experience! more

Glad to finally find a reliable moving company. Apartment Movers helped move my business safely into our new location downtown. I would use them again to move my shop. more

Perfect location and comfortable bed, 9/10/2012

. . . what more can you ask for. My husband and I stayed in "Flat B" for two nights in February. The previous posts are all accurate regarding the amenities, so I won't repeat. Linda met us at the door and provided a very thorough tour of our suite, the house and grounds. If I had to describe our suite in one word, it would be "comfortable". We parked our car in our assigned spot (for free) and didn't see it again until we were ready to leave. Literally everything is within walking distance. This part of San Diego is a high density, urban area where parking is at a premium. We were pleased not to have to deal with it. We are both very finicky when it comes to sleeping arrangements, and these were perfect. An extremely comfortable, huge bed, a dark room (after closing blinds and turning off lights), with little street noise at night. Not a complaint, but a word of advise: Flat B has a beautiful, antique claw-foot tub, with very high sides. As a proven klutz, I felt the need to have my husband's help in getting out of the wet tub as there isn't a handrail (which there shouldn't be in this period bathroom). Keep this in mind if you have any mobility problems. more

The patio and garden to which we were privy was, as everything else at Mudville Flats, atmospheric and perfect. 5/7/2012

Sigh. I don't even know where to start with this review. Although we have had many wonderful experiences in our countless forays out into the world at large, we've rarely come across an accomodation that has it all. And make no mistake, Mudville Flats has it all. Let's take it from the from the very beginning of our booking. No cold, impersonal, business-only approach here: Linda, the extremely personable and warm innkeeper, certainly set the scene for the level of service that we were about to enjoy. I knew from our first telephone conversation that we made the right choice in booking with her. Upon arrival, that initial good vibe was confirmed in droves. Linda and her husband Mike could not have been more helpful and invested in making our stay memorable. Linda's suggestions for restaurants were beyond spot on -- great food, funky atmospheres without a trace of touristy kitsch. Mike was kind enough to suggest very cool activities to engage our two teenaged daughters, including a boat cruise out of San Diego's harbour (with complimentary tickets, as Mike and Linda and their party were unable to use their previously purchased tickets) and an epic morning spent touring the city on Segways. The suite? Sublime. We stayed in the gorgeous Flat D, rife with all the comforts of home and then some. Kitchen appliances and accessories were brand new and top notch quality. The bathroom was spotless and very chic. The bed was a whole new level of comfort, the likes of which we wish we had at home. The challenge was to get up and out of it each morning....not an easy task. Linda added extra comfort foam to the already high quality pull out upon which our daughters slept, and for the first time ever, neither girl complained of having to sleep in the same bed as her sister. The patio and garden to which we were privy was, as everything else at Mudville Flats, atmospheric and perfect. more

Great location, comfort, and style. 5/7/2012

We enjoyed our week at Mudville Flats tremendously. This is a great place to stay if you want a great location in San Diego. The staff is friendly and helpful. Staying here is also a great alternative to the "hotel fatigue" that you get in the big chain hotels. We stayed in "Unit B." This unit is on the ground floor, and on the back side of the building. We rented a car from the airport, and on our way into San Diego, we stopped at an Albertson's food store so we could stock our fridge for the week and make use of the full kitchen in our unit. When we arrived, Linda was very helpful. The check-in process involved her helping us carry our bags and groceries from the car, a full tour of the unit and back courtyard area, and many great suggestions for dining and activities right withing walking distance. She also took us to the parking garage and showed us where our parking space would be for the week. The location is great. We actually did see 2 baseball games at Petco park, which is a very short walk. But even if you do not watch baseball, or if it is in the off season, there are TONS of other attractions within just a few blocks. Favorite spots for us were "Cafe Chloe" and "The Neighborhood" for dining, "Kiyos" for shushi, and "Croce's" for live jazz. Tell Linda the kind of food and drink you enjoy, and the type of things you like to do, and she will steer you in the right direction, based on your tastes. more

Mike & Linda are the greatest landlords ever! 5/7/2012

Mike & Linda are the greatest landlords ever! You couldn't feel more comfortable or welcomed. Walking distance to the ballpark and Gaslight District. You can even barbecue in your own back yard. Mudville Flats makes traveling fun! more

A very nice place to stay for the convention center. 5/7/2012

I stayed at the mudville flats for 6 days while attending a conference at the convention center with a professional colleague. The room was very nice and the pull out couch, which came with an additional memory foam mattress atop the regular mattress, was quite comfortable. The hotel is a short 10-12 minute walk to the convention center and just 2-5 minutes to the restaurants of the gas lamp district. The owners as easily reached by mobile phone 24/7 and will help you out in every possible way. A will come back for sure. more

The perfect home from home! 5/7/2012

When I return to San Diego I will definately be staying at Mudville Flats again, in my opinion, there is no need to waste valuable time looking anywhere else! It was my last stop before flying home after a month travelling around the world and it was a true gem, a definite highlight for me! I will need to stay longer than the three days I was there originally as I only scratched the surface of what San Diego has to offer! Mike and Linda are the perfect hosts and have the balance just right between service if you need it and privacy. I really liked the welcome bottle of Californian wine when I arrived, such an unexpected gesture which set the tone for my stay! The property is in the perfect location right on the edge of all the hustle and bustle of the Gaslamp area and it's tourist attractions, but a short stroll back to the seclusion and peace of the room when it's time to rest up! Everything exceeded my expectations, the room was furnished with high quality furniture and a very comfy bed which guaranteed I was ready to take on the rigours of the following day fighting fit and fresh! Mudville Flats has space and charm in abundance and leaves all those impersonal chain hotel box bedrooms in the shade, there is no comparison, I felt like a VIP. I want to return here as soon as I can,San Diego is amazing and my stay was enhanced by having stayed at this property! more

What a cozy place to stay! 5/7/2012

What a cozy place to stay! Great room, friendly owner and great recommendations for local places to visit and restaurants to try. We've found the place we will stay at again when visiting San Diego. more

Bed and Breakfast San Diego CA 5/7/2012

Absolutely beautiful traditional apartment, the attention to detail is fantastic and the owners (a couple who also live in the building) genuinely care about their guests and it really shows. The bed was quite honestly the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in, incredible...and huge! The bedding was luxuriously comfortable, the rest of the furnishings also excellent. A great kitchen with everything you need, a lovely bathroom with hairdryer, bath, shower and loads of towels, large flat screen TV with free movies, a living room to watch it in, big wardrobe with loads of hangers...honestly these guys have thought of everything down to the last detail. The apartment door has a number key in entry so it's totally secure and you have a key for the door at the main entrance, we left everything in the room without feeling worried about anything going missing, it's all very secure. The apartment is within easy walking distance of everything in town and we had a hire car and they provided free secure parking for us a 2 minute walk from the apartment. It is on a main road and you can get some traffic noise in the morning but really not that much and we always travel everywhere with ear plugs as we are seasoned travellers. A fantastic place to stay and I would recommend it well above a hotel stay; it's much better value for money, fantastic friendly owners, immaculately clean, much more spacious than a horrible out of date grubby hotel room, better furnishings, an amazing bed, more freedom and easy to get everywhere in San Diego. We loved it and stayed 3 nights; we extended our stay from 2 nights just because we loved this place so much. San Diego Zoo is fantastic...it's enormous, we were in there over 4 hours...and the park is great. more

Downtown Hotel San Diego CA 5/7/2012

I stayed for a week in Mudville Flats and enjoyed the room very much and the personal service of the innkeepers. My roommate and I used the kitchen and found it to be very convenient, and even the fold-out couch was very comfortable. The location is very good, and we found the recommendations for restaurants and other services to be very helpful - the innkeepers have excellent taste and know San Diego very well. more

Boutique Hotel at its Finest! 3/30/2012

As a writer, I seek the unusual: that hidden jewel that will let me experience a city from off the beaten path...yet close enough to the pulse of the city that I can sample its unique wonders. With its lush, private patio space, replete with wonderful lounging chairs, a shaded deck, tropical plants galore, an easy-to-operate propane grill, Mudville Flats created for me a private place where I could write, read...dream! My husband and I enjoy sampling local restaurants, but sometimes the mood strikes to dine in. With an ample kitchen right in our suite, Mudville Flats provided a change to lap up San iego's fresh organice produce and seafood, slap them on the grill, and presto--enjoy our al fresco dining room for two. Don't forget, though, that this fabulous accommodation is only steps from some of San Diego's finest eateries, and professional hosts Linda and Mike have stocked an antique dresser with menus, sightseeing tips...and their cell numbers, just in case you need more information. I love those hosts who provide top-quality bedding, rugs, window treatments--you've got it all here, folks. Even a sound machine to lull you to sleep as if you were tucking into a room on Cornado's beachfront resorts! The baseball stadium is only a few minutes' walk away; Balboa Park a brisk 15-minute walk. All with great people-watching views!! Mudville Flats will be our only consideration for future trips to lovely San Diego. Don't pass up a chance to build memories for a lifetime! more

Great location, great amenities, and great hosts. 3/30/2012

My boyfriend and I were trying to decide on where to stay on my birthday trip to San Diego and we had a tough time deciding between the city or the beach. We wanted to be close to downtown to experience urban San Diego but also wanted to hit the beach while we were so close. We decided to stay at Mudville Flats because it offered a unique hotel/B&B/apt feel and it looked relatively close to everything we wanted to do. We were blown away by how perfect Mudville Flats was for us. We're not the type to do reviews like this but Mike and Linda deserve the best reviews possible. Booking was a breeze and our special check in and check out times were accommodated without a problem. When we got there, Linda greeted us and gave us a quick and friendly run through of the amenities and even offered us their personal parking space to accommodate our large truck. Linda was so great and really took an interest in our stay and gave us great suggestions for food and entertainment...the kind of suggestions that you want when visiting a new city. When we told Linda we were celebrating my birthday she brought down a special gift too. So sweet! The back patio is quiet and spacious and is the perfect place to relax away from the city...you don't even feel like you're in the city. My boyfriend and I love to cook and the flat is well stocked with pots, pans, and other cooking utensils and, best of all, everythng worked. The room is fantastic: spacious, cozy, clean with a terrific king-size bed. There are even board games in the rooms which we found ourselves playing each night. We were sad to have to leave and will certainly stay at Mudville Flats again. more

Perfect 3/30/2012

We recently spent three nights at Mudville Flats and absolutely enjoyed our stay. The place was very clean and charming. It seems to be an older home that has been beautifully renovated. The bed is simply the best, very high end. The amenities in bathroom, towels, etc. also very high end. The owner Linda and Mike were both very helpful and yet not in our space at all, they recommended some great spots to eat, all of which we enjoyed. Great location too, we could walk to lots of places for shopping, sightseeing and many restaurants. We really enjoyed our stay, our only regret is that we didn't book it longer as we were at another place in San Diego for another four nights which we were very disappointed in. We would certainly love to return to Mudville Flats and have already highly recommended this place to our friends and family. Jerry and Louise more

Excellent accomodations 3/30/2012

My wife and I just had a delightful 3-night stay at the Mudville Flats. We stayed in Flat B, which I recommend because it is at the rear of the property, away from the road noise. The flat was spacious, well appointed and uniquely decorated (especially if you like baseball). This was much better than our typical chain hotel. Couples will definitely enjoy the Mudville Flats. We plan on a return visit. more

Oasis 3/30/2012

Stayed here in June based on trip advisor reviews. We had wanted a b&b and booked here on that basis so were a bit surprised to find out breakfast wasn't included. There is a very well equipped kitchen in each room though so apart from the fact we hadn't planned on going to a supermarket, buying food and preparing our own breakfast, it wasn't a huge deal, just inconvenient. Thank goodness we had hired a car because to get to the supermarket on the evening we arrived would have been a problem. Plenty of coffee, creamers, tea etc though for a quick cuppa. Anyone who thinks they don't need a car in San deigo should rethink their plans as we dont think that the public transport system would allow you to make the best of your time here. We were there for 4 nights and enjoyed coming back after a big day out to the peace and quiet of these lovely rooms. Beware of the metal bar in the middle of the wardrobe though. I kicked my recently operated toe on it because the rooms are quite dark and totally broke my toenail half way down and right across, my fault entirely for not taking more care after a couple of near misses! The bath was divine for a late night soak after a big day but if staying for more than a night or two you will need to bring your own shampoo and conditioner and soap as the one of each provided was not enough for 3 people staying 4 nights. Free Parking provided in a parking station nearby, lots of brochures in the room to plan your time and Linda was very helpful on our arrival night with recommending restaurants. more
