Dr. Muckerman, my long-time then trusted ob/gyn, removed my uterus and both ovaries (castration) for a benign cyst on one ovary. He used ovarian cancer fear tactics and said that everything MUST be removed. He referred me to an oncologist and then did NOT follow his recommendation to only remove the ovary with the cyst although some actions by the oncologist are also suspect. \r

Dr. Muckerman did NOT inform me of all the permanent negative health consequences of living without these organs (e.g., 7x risk of heart disease and increased risk of all cause mortality, increased risk of osteoporosis, rapid muscle loss, rapid collagen loss, bladder and bowel prolapse, loss of sensation due to severed nerves and vessels, loss of pelvic support, spine compression leading to abdominal distension, risk of depression and anxiety, etc.) Nor did he inform me of the risks of hormone replacement. His only comment about hormones was that they are easily balanced which is NOT true. And hormones CANNOT adequately replace those produced by the body to keep us healthy. \r

Don't think that you are safe with this doctor since the drive into St. John's Mercy Medical Center bears his name as does the campus garage. Muckerman Drive and Muckerman Garage may just be indicative of the revenues generated by Dr. Muckerman and/or his ob/gyn father, Dr. Richard Muckerman I. Hysterectomy is BIG business in the U.S. to the tune of $17B per year. And St. John's is a key player. Their Graduate Medical Education (GME) website actually states ""Abdominal and vag**** hysterectomies are the bread and butter of the gynecological inpatient rotation."" This is indicative of it being the bread and butter (livelihood) of the ob/gyn specialty. Why else would there be 600,000+ hysterectomies every year in the U.S. such that 1 in 3 women over the age of 60 has had one? I suspect the desire to continue the lucrative industry of hysterectomy also played into my being gutted as GME students assisted with my surgery to remove a perfectly healthy uterus and a perfectly healthy ovary. \r

Makes me wonder if Dr Muckerman would be so quick to remove his gonads (testicles) for a benign cyst. If not, then why does he do so to his patients? I can only suspect greed and power! Ovary removal is the same as testicle removal=Castration! \r
