Worst Place to go in Malibu, Went there once & never again 9/21/2010

Well, sorry if i sound too negative, I don't usually like to leave bad comments but i had to save you from a bad experience, so here it is. Last night was my girlfriends Bday! I have seen Moonshodows before, but had never been there. So i figure what the hell, the place is in Malibu and it is in front of the ocean, what could go wrong? So i made and online reservation and i put under special request that it was her birth day and wanted a nice table with a view. So We drove from Santa Barbara, we got to the place and nothing was ready and we were REQUIRED to do valet parking, nothing wrong with that, but it is absurd, that they have you get out of your car and park your car 10 feet behind you and after they make you wait in the cold 15 min for your car, and on top they charge you $6 for the inconvenience. Anyways i think that was stupid! I didnt give too much importance to that, I looked at the place and i was blown away, the place is beautiful. Until they start ""serving you"" lol if you want to even call it that! The service was so horrible, we couldn't help but laugh and count all the rude and bad things they were doing to make the best out of it! They brought us bread and butter, but no napkins or silverware. my gf order wine and i asked for water and limes, well 15 min for a water and no limes. they finally bring the food and trust me, i am not a cheap person but it is way over price for the food you get, not only the amount but also the taste. But i will give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe i just happen to order the worst thing on the menu. So do not order their Tiger Shrimp. The waitress was probably the worst part of the night, she was very rude, and on top of that dumb or she just didnt care, maybe because i am not a celebrity. haha. Anyways this comment would be a waste of my time if i was writing it for them because they already wasted enough of my time. But i decided to write it since i am trying to save you from going through the same thing, if you decide to go, just be ready to make the best out of it! I guess the only positive thing about that place is that you do not have to leave a tip!, hahah oh and make sure to give the exact change to the valet guy. I handed him a ten, and then he walk the opposite direction and started moving cars, i just let it go but the whole place is a rip off, lol. By the way if you are in management and you are reading this, do not be upset with your hostess, she was probably the only kind person. ohh and for the waitress, if you don like your job, we as customers do not need your either just because you need to pay your bills, it is better that you request a day off if you had a long day. Didn't get your name but we were there 09/20/10 around 9:00pm, so you know who you are. PS: what a waste of such a beautiful restaurant and location. more

all about view 4/17/2010

I just got back from moonshadows. On my way back home I was just thinking about writing a comment about the place. First of all, I just want to mention that I am a person who is in the show business (just telling this not because I want to satisfy my ego, its because I am hoping someone in the management will read this) and got earned them lots of customers but the service got worse and worse everytime I went there. I did not mention my name to get a better service because im not that kind of a person but I could not believe my eyes; the way waitress treated me Jesus I felt like I am a begger and begging food from the waitress... How dare? Again I am not satisfying my ego, but in order for them to give a better service, they have to loose lots of customers. Not even ONE of my friends will go to that place until they reach me in some way and apologize for that unfortunate service. more

Good food, great setting 2/9/2009

Moonshadows has one of the best patios in Los Angeles. Their outdoor seating area is on the water with private cabana-style tables and is one of my favorite spots for drinks in the afternoon. My only complaint is that the Ahi burger isn't available on weekends... Pros: Outdoor patio, view, cocktails more

Food/Service= 1 star, View= 5 stars. 1/25/2009

First off, if you are going for great food or service, this is not the place. If you're looking for a pretentious, trendy, dancie lounge/bar, this IS the place.\r \r However, there is one corner at Moonshadows for boring, reclusive East Coasters/New Englanders who sometimes miss their stinky ocean shanty neighborhoods (especially if you live in LA/BevHills and not near one of the beach communities)- \r The one 'smoking corner' at the back that sits over the ocean- It's away from the loud dance music on the deck thing where those couches are, has only 8 barstools, but full menu ordering power. You can also smoke butts, and there is NO music or heaters (for those who like it a bit chilly-if not, bring a sweater). It's the perfect place to go with a lover or friend, sit and listen to the waves. \r \r Because this area is more of an 'infidel/outcast' detention area (smokers and people waiting to be seated), it is not hustling, not loud and not obnoxious as the rest of the place, etc...\r You can watch, smell and HEAR the ocean while you munch so-so food, and drink so-so drinks. Usually the alright waiters/busboys run this detention area I speak of-Sit inside and you're bound to get a crabby waitress. \r \r FYI, look out for the hostess, she's got a huge insect up there-maybe a Eusattus Dune Beetle? In any case, the view and relative solace of this one corner is worth the aggravation of navigating your way through the legions of clowns, unless you're there for the circus. Pros: Hear and Smell the Ocean & Smoke!!!! Cons: Bad Service, Food OK, Only Valet Parking more

Sunday Brunch anyone? 9/13/2008

MOONSHADOWS CHARGES YOUR ACCOUNT 3X THE BILL VALUE 8/16/2008

Moonshaddows will authorize your account for up up to 3 time the value of the purchase. I had some drinks there last week, and the billed me $60, when i signed for $58, and THEN they authorized my account for $175! This meant that I was unable to access $175 in funds for over 5 days. That's just not kosher in my books. more

The Best Mojitos 7/6/2008

Was just there July 1, 2008. My daughter, bestfriend and myself met up with a long time friend that we hadn't seen in almost 30 years. She lives in Santa Barbara and suggested meeting at Moonshadows. The bartender was very personable (not to mention the most beautiful blue eyes) and made the best Mojito. The food was very good and the service was great. We stayed a while catching up way past our lunch and never felt that they wanted us to leave. The view is what any visitor to Malibu would expect. I would definitely visit again when in California. Pros: Views, Mojitos more

Amazing all around... 6/5/2008

I was a bit reluctant to eat here, thinking it might be overrated, but WOW! The food was phenomenal, the chef (Joaquin?) even came out to see how our meal was, and it was excellent (tuna tartar and the short ribs- melt in your mouth DELICIOUS!!) .. We went on a weeknight and they had a live DJ playing the most perfect chill music - exactly what I would want sitting literally ON the sea. Could you get a better view?! The hostess was fabulous, never made us feel out of place and although we had to wait, it was beyond worth it. I saw what I believe was the owner walking around (overheard the waitress), checking in on people, very genuinely caring about the diner's experience. The BEST place to take anyone coming in from out of town, as well as anyone who thinks Malibu is too far (it isn't!) Thank you Moonshadows, for restoring my faith in local food and fare. Will be back many times! Love it! Pros: Service, Food, Music more

Wonderful Ambiance 9/25/2007

This place has a great ambiance! Wonderful views - the service can be slow - but that is to be expected at popular Malibu restarants, although I have always been treated well. I have been several times, and never that impressed with the food - but I am very picky. The menu however is put together nicely - its seasonal, the drinks are wonderful - and again the views are great. Great to take an out - of - town guest . Pros: Views - Drinks - Cons: Food is only OK more

AWFUL SERVICE, RUDE HOSTESS 9/17/2007

We had a small birthday part of 11 people..let me remind you we had reserved days in advance that we wanted a ocean view, we still had to wait over an hour to be seated by the rude hostess. We waited another 20-30 mins for our orders to be taken for drinks...another 1-1:50 for our dinner orders to be taken. JUST AWFUL SERVICE with a bill over $1500...I highly dont recommend this place. more

Run down place!!! 9/10/2007

I Went for dinner and cocktails. The place was really rundown. The wait staff was terrible. The food was decent. The service was what really brought down the night. The music was pounding a club beat that was strange while eating chart house type of food. If you are under 25 years old you might like this place. The view of the ocean was great. Pros: View, Young people Cons: run down, bad service, expensive more

Good food, bad service 7/10/2007

It's hard to get both, isn't it? We arrived on time for our reservation but got seated 30 minutes later. Our server was not friendly at all. She barely waited our table. The bus boys did most of the work. Our food came out at least 40 minutes after we ordered. At least it tasted good...but we did not want to stick around for dessert and wait another 40 minutes. Nice view in the dining room. Not exactly a romantic date spot because of the noisy bar. Pros: good food Cons: slow and unfriendly service more

Unbelievable views...and nice seafood selection 5/24/2007

This is a terrific restaurant off of PCH in Malibu. What makes the dining experience is the incredible view of the ocean. The menu consists mostly of seafood. Evcerything we had was well prepared. This is not a place for vegetarians, in fact I dont think there was a vegetarian item on the menu. As opposed to other reviewers, we went for dinner on a Tuesday night at 9pm and did not have nay problems being seated or with service. The restaurant provided a nice experience overall, especially because of the view.\r \r I think If i had to sit away from the window or with my back to view i wouldnt have enjoued my experience half as much. Overall, a nice romantic setting for a date/anniversary...and possibly a nice place to grab a drink on the deck...though this might get crowded. Pros: the view, the view, did i mention the view? Cons: crowded on occasion, no vegetarian dishes more

I stayed for about 2.4 seconds. 4/27/2007

My boyfriend and I wanted to go to Moonshadows b/c we heard the Mojitos are amazing. Well, we got there and it was a $10 cover for the men. Apparently Malibu restaurants on the water double as a Hollywood night club. Whatever, we decided to go for it anyway...I was expecting the deck to be relaxing, with people laughing and having a good time, enjoying their drinks and the view b/c it is Malibu and it was a Sunday...TOTAL opposite. It was plain obnoxious...it was incredibly loud. There's a DJ booth on the tiny deck. Waiters were rushing back and forth knocking you over. People were acting way more cooler and drunker than they actually are. Won't be going there again... Pros: The view Cons: Loud music, onbnoxious people, cover charge more

great spot 3/19/2007

Moonshadows is a great all around experience for ANYONE who has ever gone out before... which is to say, yes the valet tends to take a long time - what busy restaraunt/club/hotel doesn't?? It's on PCH so there's traffic and when there are 5-20 people ahead of me I know they're not transporting my car in from magic fairyland and I either grab a quick coffee or drink for the non-dd or I excercise the patience which grown-ups are supposed to posses (as for the soda that the one reviewer accused the valet of drinking...there are some people who spend there life blaming the gardener, the maid, the valet for all of their ever increasing absent minded moments...btw, they work at a restaraunt/bar, what would the valet want with a second hand sip of your nasty soda when the Pepsi guy probably comes by daily?? Sad.)\r The food is good - although I mostly go for cocktails and apps and the AMAZING million$ view, I have loved the fish entrees I've had and my boyfriend always loves the steaks! (I will agree that the salads do come heavily dressed and asking for light dressing is probably smart...)\r \r The view is to die for, the cocktails are fabulous, the staff is hot and have always treated me and my guests with nothing but respect (you get what you give), and there is a huge deck with cabanas and beds and a Tiki Bar and lots of happy people enjoying themselves. \r \r All in all, if you have ever been out in LA, we all know that it ALWAYS takes a long time to be seated in any popular place, 4:00 is a bad (and odd) time to eat ANYWHERE, and unless the mere sight of your face becons a swarms of seething paparazzi, your gonna wait a minute for your car - try leaving a club!\r \r Moonshadows is one of my favorite spots on the Westside - if youre miserable to begin with, please dont go...leave the good times to those of us who enjoy life and spending our off time sipping yummy cocktails over crashing waves. Stay at home and count your sodas. Pros: Cocktails, views, apps, vibes... Cons: the interior would benefit from a update/style-upgrade... more
