Solid Aveda Salon & Spa 1/28/2012

First visited Mood Swings in 2008 for hair & waxing services. Found fab stylist Brittany Lehman (no longer on staff), who I followed and, to this day, works her magic on my tresses. Esthetician Jenny Butson made my first brazilian quick and painless. Cecilia is the go-to nail guru for a high-quality Shellac manicure or spa pedicure at a reasonable rate. Last-minute appointment specials sent weekly via email. Enjoy the Aveda touches like tea and hand massages. But could do without the noise of hustle and bustle that echoes salon-wide thanks to its high-vaulted ceiling. While I no longer frequent this salon, I will stop in for the occasional nail session. more

bad business 9/17/2006

Mood Swings is an arty salon located in an old repurposed bank building on Mill avenue. It looks nice, and at first blush, seems to be a nice place. I believe the way a business treats its employees says a lot about the type of establishment it is, and there are a few things I can say about the way Mood Swings' employees are treated. Is it good business to bully your employees, reprimanding them in front of clients? Is it unusual for a business to threaten so many of its former employees with legal action? Stylists are expected to work maximum hours -- making up every hour taken off regardless of reason (vacation? graduation? family function? funeral? same diff!) and treated as expendable. Which isn't to say that every pretense has not been explored to file suits and threats against (numerous of) those stylists who leave the salon. Few people could be long-suffering enough to last very long under these conditions, and who could blame them? Any number of reasons can be given as to why a stylist did not earn their full commissions for the week. You'd think the place was being owned and run by an accountant or something. And you might be right. In conclusion, I cannot recommend a place that seems to put more emphasis on maximizing profits by exploiting its employees rather than treating them fairly, and employees that are treated poorly cannot be expected to defend or sustain the establishment that employs them -- nor, indeed, to tolerate it for very long. "Who cares?, we'll just sue them and hire more!" This is the very definition of bad business. more
