Poorly Run Shelter with Barbaric Practices 6/20/2008

Pity the poor dogs and cats who end up in the Montcalm County Animal Shelter. The adoption rate is almost non existent, animals are suffocated in a CO2 barrel instead of being given a humane lethal injection. Dogs and cats are given to a class b dealer in exchange for him hauling carcasses. This is not a shelter. It is nothing more than a holding tank. The animals wait to be put into the barrel or for a worse fate...which is to end up being used for experimentation. This practice has been going on for over 30 years and the County Commissioners are the ones who sign a contract to allow the animals to suffer. Shame on you Montcalm County Commissioners. It is time to make some big positive changes. Pros: There is no where to go but up. Cons: Animals go to research or are suffocated in a barrel filled with CO2. more

Montcalm County gives LIVE shelter animals to a class b animal dealer, who then sells them for profit. 6/11/2008

Montcalm County Animal Shelter/Control GIVES its unclaimed pets to R&R Research, a class b animal dealer, privately owned by James and Roberta Woudenberg, who then sell the pets for profit.\r \r Even though the AVMA recommends an injection into a VEIN as the preferred method of euthanasia. Montcalm Animal Control gasses animals in a barrel. CO2 is heavier than air so the cats, dogs, puppies and kittens try to climb out of the barrel to raise their heads above the deadly gas. Heavier animals get an injection into the heart, known as a 'heartstick'. Mr. Woudenberg performs this 'service' for the shelter, even though euthanizing animals isn't in his contract with the county. Nice huh?\r \r As expected, the adoption rate for the shelter is painfully low.\r \r There are nine Montcalm County Commissioners responsible for these barbaric decisions. Until they hear from numerous concerned citizens, they won't be motivated to change their objectionable policies and outdated practices.\r \r Montcalm County Board of Commissioners:\r \r Marcia Walker, \r Tom Lindeman, \r Ron Retzloff, \r John Johansen, \r Carl Paepke, \r Ron Baker, \r Pat Carr, \r Roger Caris, \r John McCrackin, \r \r The nine people listed above are responsible for the practices used at the Montcalm County Animal Shelter. Pros: Things can change for the better, if the commissioners respond to the will of the public. Cons: The Montcalm Animal Shelter gives unclaimed pets to research. more
