My sushi place used to be Masu. Then they changed to Bamboo and for some reason become more snobby in the changeover. While Meiji-En isn't nearly as swanky as Masu, the sushi i...

Let me preface by saying I don't like to rip into an establishment for the sport of it. I had eaten here last year and had a pretty good meal, nothing spectacular, but it was fin...

Never again 2/2/2007

Not worth waiting for\r \r I don?t know if it?s a conflict of interest to have the manager also preparing the food, but that appears to be a big problem with Meiji-En. Our party was seated in the tatami room, where we received our drinks and were able to finish them before ever receiving a menu, which we had to ask for. We placed our orders, wrote our names on the sushi menu and then waited hours for our sub-par meal. When the staff would deign to communicate with us, it was to let us know our food would be served imminently, which we soon learned was a mere diversionary tactic. We watched as other tables and the sushi bar were seated, served, and left, all while we received nothing more than miso soup and some very watered down tea. \r \r When the food finally came, the rolls were falling apart because the rice had not been properly prepared. Where sushi rice is normally sticky, ours seemed to just slide apart. We ordered quite a bit of ?spicy? style rolls (salmon, yellow tail and tuna) and all of it was too heavy on the mayo, causing even further degradation of the rolls. Most of us didn?t receive several of our rolls because, apparently, during the hours we were waiting for our dishes, the chefs had run out of the ingredients necessary to prepare them. When we asked to speak to the manager, he was too busy preparing other people?s dishes to talk to us until we were ready to walk out. We received the bill which had been adjusted for some discount, but on reviewing the itemization, many of us were charged for items never received. When we objected to having to pay so much, the manager/chef simply responded that if we didn?t like waiting we should have left. \r \r Since most of us had come straight from work, we had been too hungry to leave, but lesson learned. We won?t be returning. \r \r If you are willing to risk the bad service, you might get a decent roll or two, but be prepared to be told it?s your own fault if you aren?t happy.\r Pros: not one Cons: read the list... more

Worst dining experience EVER. Don't go. 2/2/2007

Wow, I can?t remember when I?ve had a worse dining experience. Ever. And I go out to dinner often.\r \r We arrived for our 7:30 reservation promptly. The table was ready. The wait staff seated us. It all went down hill from there.\r \r We dine in fairly large groups, last night a group of 9, which is why one of our group always calls a couple days ahead to make sure we can be accommodated, and if not, we make other arrangements. Well, our reservation was accepted. What the restaurant didn?t plan for was actually making enough rice to accommodate the patrons. Hello? This is a Japanese restaurant! We heard over and over, ?5 more minutes? ?Oh, should be just a couple more minutes.? Well, it?s a good thing we had conversation, because we weren?t served dinner for nearly THREE HOURS. They tried to placate us with a bit of free edamame about an hr or more into it, but at 2.5hrs, we were so done, and ready to walk that what happens? Of course right at that moment, the food finally started coming. What to do? Eat now that it?s finally here and we?re starving, or leave. Hunger won over. \r \r Long story short, save your time and money. This was dismal service and only mediocre sushi. What made this even more painful? The fact that I had a full view of the sushi bar, which turned over twice in the time we waited for our food. Poorly handled by the owner who works the sushi bar. None of us will go back, I?m quite sure.\r \r Yes, they discounted our meals, but the lack of communication from the staff, and planning by the restaurant falls quite short of making up for it. Pros: Good for your diet: you won't get served. Cons: Eternal wait for food. more

Exquisite, affordable sushi 11/21/2006

I am a sushiholic and am always looking for the best - this is as close to sushi heaven as I have found and the prices are very reasonable. Love it so much went two days in a row! Pros: exquisite, affordable sushi Cons: although server was having an off day - will still go back more

Finally, a Japanese restaurant that's not overpriced 11/15/2006

The food here is good and very affordable compared to other overpriced places in Portland. This place offers a good variety of sushi. The most since I've moved here 2 years ago. The tempura was crispy and tasty. The rainbow roll was pretty good and had ample sashimi on top of it. If you want the most for your money, this place has it. They are very generous. Pros: taste, portions, affordable, Cons: parking more

Sushi made with care using the freshest fish in understated surroundings 7/28/2006

We've spent a lot of time in sushi restaurants and we're really happy to have found Meiji-En. The sushi chef clearly understands fish and carefully selects the best, and freshest pieces to serve. We've learned more about sushi from him while sitting at the sushi bar over the last few weeks than we have in years at other places.\r Beyond the sushi the decor is simple and elegant, nothing overwhelming. The tatami rooms are elegant and small enough for a few people not to feel overwhelmed. The wait service is friendly but a little slow. Beyond the sushi, the appetizers are good but not amazing. The tempura is crisp and the edamame fresh. The seaweed salad is a bit small for the price. \r If you are looking for sushi made with the freshest ingredients in a casual, unpretentious setting Meiji-En is the place to go.\r Pros: Sushi made with the freshest ingredients in casual surroundings more
