Located in the heart of the upscale Park Cities within the confines of a somewhat unexpected university lies a treasure trove of Spanish art... the largest, in fact, of any museum outside Spain. Southern Methodist University's Meadows Museum is bursting full of Miros, Picassos, Goyas, as well as pieces from Spain's medieval and Moorish periods. The spacious building is just 5 years old; formerly housed inside the Meadows School of the Arts, it now has its own rather intimidating home at the front of the university; in fact, the king of Spain was present for the inauguration of the new location. As if that weren't enough, the galleries regularly feature temporary exhibits from SMU's DeGolyer library of rare books and maps, and loans from museums the world over. Most recently their concentration has been in European and North American art, but in the past they've also featured Mexican and Japanese exhibits, for example.
Meadows is one of those places that goes undiscovered by locals, even students, for years before they realise the greatness of the Prado is practically in their backyard.
